My E46 M3 which is set up for the track is a daily driver. It's a visceral experience for sure. The car pretty much owns the southern section of I-95 in Florida. Brembo brakes, floating Brembo slotted rotors, with Cobalt Friction Racing brake pads. 265 mm stiff sidewall sticky Dunlop tires on all four corners. Lowered on Coilovers, polyurethane bushings and giant anti-sway bars front and back. Surprisingly comfortable except on some of the worst broken payment. The steering and balance of my car are simply unbelievable. It is what you might call flickable. On the Highway; If you see an opening, all she needs to do is visualize it, down shift and you automatically materialize in that new position in traffic. That's the best I can describe it without having you experience it first-hand

Choose one: Good highway car or E46. 333hp is not a lot for long highway nor is the car fun to sit for because its anti ergonomic.

There is one problem when you own a e46 m3. Everytime you look into other cars even the newer m cars. You drive them and for some reason you end up coming back to the e46. For some reason nothing can top it's class in terms of raw power and handling

I have a 16 year old E46 cab with 98,000 kms (Canada). Been a dream. Very little expense. Just changed the clutch and alternator otherwise gas and oil. Can't say enough. When I sit in this car it makes me smile. Peek in the garage every once in a while just to make sure its there.

I have 2 of these, have had 3 overall. I currently whip a 2002 as my daily and I have a 2006 zcp stage 4 in the garage :) E46 is, was and will always be my favorite car, ever since I laid eyes on it in the Spring of 2001.

I spoke to an IT guy that has had all 5 gens of m3. This is coming from what I consider the quintessential "m3 guy" his favorite was the e92. He drives an f80 6spd right now.

Technically the M3 started with an inline 4, so I'm not sure engine configuration is the be all and end all factor in a M car.

This is the hero car for me. However this particular spec with the aftermarket front and rear bumpers is really suited for the track, and I think team Schirmer uses the same bumper setup. The arguement of this vs other generations is moot to the individual, IMO this is the greatest one but you can make an arguement for all of them. The F series and beyond are very different, and M means something different imo for those models. Also a properly sorted slight massaged E46 decatted with 2.5in exhaust setup, slightly upgraded brake pads and rotors, maintained properly (subframe/racp, rods, vanos) is a weapon of a car. The way this car feels on the road in the corners, the way it communicates through you bum and the steering wheel, the size of the car, how you place it etc... They say never meet your heroes, I met mine in Sep 2019, man oh man what a machine :D

Have driven all the m3's in their various guises , i have to say the e92 for me is the last true m3, after the v8 everything is geared towards emissions etc, i have driven the e36/46 but the feeling of the v8 cannot be surpassed!, but thats just my opinion .

Last true m is the e92. V8 is to die for. I own 1! Love the e46 as well. I owned 2 before. A coupe and a convertible. E46 is more plagued with problems but a simpler to work with. Better fuel economy as well

Ivan Nevistic the E92 is like 200 pounds heavier than the E46, but has a much better HP to weight ratio. I love the E46 but imo the E92 is better in every aspect
