4th guy is Alain Johannes , part of the seed of what became the Red Hot Chili Peppers afterwards, foundingmember of Eleven, mastermind behind the instrumentation of the first Chris Cornell solo album, part of the Desert Sessions with Josh Homme and PJ Harvey among others and Queens of the Stone Age for a while. He's a great musician and producer, never on the spotlight though. And he's part chilean 🤘🏽. Great reaction as usual.

judging by his talent and connections he's exactly where he chooses and wants to be. flying under the radar like that, i can understand the appeal.

I have once correction. He was not the mastermind behind the instrumentation of Euphoria Mourning.... Him and Natasha Schneider were. In fact, I would probably credit more than half to her and not him and I'm sure he would too. They're both equally brilliant and amazing and she's sorely missed. They were both in Queens of the Stone Age for the Lullabies tour and Alain did a ton of guitar and bass tracks across Lullabies and Era Vulgaris, yeah.

This was one of the first venues they played. They are still a bit „shy“ and „nervous“ here compared to later shows, testing the water. Josh later said, he had stage fright playing with JPJ, being a huge fan. If you dig the song, check out other live versions! It becomes an absolute jam monster. Whole album is pure gold. Especially live.

DAVID THANK YOU FINALLY!!! John Paul finally getting some respect from you was awesome and coming from another bassist. I worked with a dude and I told him John Paul was the irrelevant member of zeppelin. He said I was crazy and brought in JPJ solo albums to our job site and he blasted them all day long. They are pretty much instrumentals only but that are some vocal. I was an instant fan by the first few songs, he was killing it with that bass guitar. I still love and listen to those albums. Powerful great songs, the bass stole the show like it should.

Definitely more than a splash of funk, 4sho. These guys were SO good. All us who bought this album and/or saw them live have frequently fantasized about a reunion-slash-new album. ALL the time. QOTSA is amazing and i love them a ton, but TCV scratches a very specific itch, and the feel is lovely.

In his teen years, Alain Johannes formed the band Chain Reaction (later Anthym) with Hillel Slovak (original RHCP guitarist), Todd Strassman, and Jack Irons (original RHCP drummer, Pearl Jam). This band was later renamed What Is This?. Todd Strassman was replaced by Flea, who was replaced, upon leaving the band, by Chris Hutchinson.

JPJ is half of the best rhythm section that has ever existed in rock & roll. He still looks and plays great. Dude is a god.

Alain Johannes is the other guitarist. I believe it's his stage name, and 2/3 of his full name.

Dave!! Thank you for doing this. I knew you would appreciate John Paul Jones on this track. Especially this performance. I saw this band in 2009 at the Roseland in Manhattan. That rhythm section of JPJ and Grohl was absolutely incredible. So powerful that I felt it in my chest. The thing I love most about this video (aside from JPJ's amazing performance and musicianship) is the other band members smiling as they remember they are on stage with John Paul Jones. Don't feel bad for gushing. He's so underrated in the pantheon of bassists/musicians. Glad you enjoyed it so much. I appreciate you and was smiling and laughing while you were gushing. There is no shame. If you have the time, there's another JPJ highlight from this show. He plays bass and keys on Spinning In Daffodils. Just spectacular. Thanks again!!

One of the best bands ever! Great review thanks! 4 giant musicians. Yes definitively there are no words for John Paul Jones, he is a legend, but Alain, Dave, and Josh are legends too! Hopefully, they collaborate again and make a new master piece.

JPJ was in one of the biggest bands of all time and somehow still completely underrated. Always does exactly what's required for the song.
