Them Or Us is pure genius. A wall of squalling distorted feedback transmogrified into complex, interesting musicality that is so completely unexpected I still am dumbstruck with awe.

I remember buying Freak Out when it was released in 1967. It was the first double album in rock history and I think the first rock album produced by the artist. I lived in a small midwestern town and this album was like nothing I had ever heard. It was weird, funny, irreverent, and felt slightly dangerous. I saw him play three times, closing the 1984 show in Atlanta with Whipping Post, right in the Allman Brother's back yard! Them or Us was never my favorite album by Frank, but your enthusiasm has me anxious to listen again. Thanks for this video. BTW, I too have the same signed card from Frank to me, and another with just his signature. "Music is the best."

My gateway to Frank Zappa was Tinsel Town Rebelion and The Man From Utopia, two LP's that a friend of mine lent me, and honestly it took me years just to skim the surface of those records. Rock, jazz, blues, samples, orchestral pieces, humor all put into a blender, and what comes out is this exquisite pot-pourri of strangelly beautiful compositions that are genuinely unique. No one sounds like Zappa and it never will.

I had been into frank since 74-75 …but it was the interplay between FZ and VC on the shut up n play yer guitar series . I had never heard interplay like that between a drummer and guitarist. Not saying it was the first but it was the most dramatic example. I saw the 80s post logeman tour and the floorboards were loose and flying around. There is a great live record from VC last tour, Buffalo…similar to the shows we saw In Pittsburgh that year…

My gateway was the Shut Up And Play Your Guitar box set, bought as my 100th album. I heard two tracks on the album on The Friday Rock show. My sister had this and a few others so I soon realised he was not just an instrumentalist. Eventually collected everything on CD. I only stopped when the box sets appeared at silly money.

Shut Up was also my gateway, back in the 80s. The three-LP box. As a guitarist, it was like being offered a feast laid out on a hundred-foot-long table - a bit overwhelming. Still digesting it all these decades later.

This is a Zappa album that got by me so now I'm intrigued. Will certainly seek it out. I'd heard a lot of Zappa in my later teens at my (semi-)stoner friends' place; most the OVERNITE SENSATIONS/APOSTROPHE era. I had a hard time reconciling the amazing playing with the potty humour. Years later, my university used to show cult movies in the evening (CLOCKWORK ORANGE; LET IT BE; Joyce's ULYSSES; etc.). Frank's 200 MOTELS was screened and I was hooked. The potty humour made sense in the context of the larger social satire plus the integration of the orchestra with the rock band took it to a higher level. From there I worked backward (HOT RATS; ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY) and forward (BONGO FURY; ONE SIZE FITS ALL) simultaneously. Great fun and musical-mind expansion! I, too, had a "box of bits" (actually a suitcase that my Guildford cousin gave me when I over-bought on my first trip to England). I filled it over the decades until it wouldn't close properly anymore. During the lockdown, I finally addressed this, cleared, culled and shredded (most of) my past experiences. No Zappa autographs but a lovely note from a long forgotten girlfriend. I would enjoy more Zappa content if/when you feel so inspired. Cheers, Andy!

We're from the same generation. Almost identical story. My best friend came to my house with this album in 1984 and said: 'You have to listen to this. Now!' So we put it on. 'Ya Hozna' blew me away and by the end of 'Sharleena' I was completely hooked. We checked who played the solo. It said: Dweezil, 14 years old. I was 16. From that moment on I started practicing my guitar like crazy. :-) I wrote to Zappa as well when I was 21. My life has never been the same since discovering his music (or his words or way of looking at things,...). Thanks for the vid.

Great video Andy. This was a very early Zappa album for me. I remember it was current when I was a teenage, Kerrang reading metalhead, but I didn't get to hear it until I discovered Frank at the dawn of the 90s. Without a doubt, a fantastic FZ LP. Irrespective of the excellent content, the recording itself is spectacular. FZ almost always put out well produced and mastered LPs, but this one is a real standout. I think it adds so much to the album whether the listener actually recognizes it or not.

Awesome video Andy I love it! I had a similar introduction to Zappa -- my dad had the compilation album Zappéd and I knew of that as a child -- (if you're not familiar, it has Beefheart and Alice Cooper and the GTOs and Wild Man Fischer and Lord Buckley among others) -- later I got turned on to Sheik Yerbouti and Joe's Garage by a friend -- then saw 200 Motels and Baby Snakes at the local midnight madness weekend movie theatre and became obsessed with FZ - - for several years in the 2000s I used the stage-name Moggio Hozna in a band I was in called Hot Buttered Elvis

Always admired Zappa's pursuit of excellence. The complexity of his music would naturally require his musicians be held to a higher standard. Performing with Frank Zappa must have been a tremendous challenge and a badge of honor. I imagine George Duke, Steve Vai, Terry Bozzio and Vinnie C. could have attested to that fact.

That was also my first album by Zappa. Shortly before, I had already heard a few pieces of Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar. That totally blew me away. It wasn't easy to get Zappa albums at the time. And Them or Us just came out and I bought it immediately. I also got to see him live in 1988 in Cologne, Bremen and Dortmund. Theese were three completely different concerts - great! I don't have an autograph with dedication from him but I actually got to talk to him on a radio programme in the US. It was the middle of the night here and I didn't care.

He answered he was working on an album of Synclavier material. I think he was talking about Civilisation Phase III. And he thanked me for the call. Years later I got a cassette with a recording of this show from someone in the USA with whom I had exchanged live tapes. I only listened to it once back then. I somehow don't like to hear my own voice.

My introduction to Zappa too - bought because it had Vai on it, however at the time some parts were just a bit too way out of my usual listening experience to really appreciate. I used to bring it out if anyone ever asked what my weirdest record was but they usually asked me to change it by the end of side 1, which meant missing the delights of Sinister Footwear,Truck Driver Divorce or Stevies Spanking. As you dont have the cover you werent able to hold up the fantastic rear cover shot of Frank taking the piss out of Michael Jackson. I didnt pick up any more Zappa though until getting into jazz rock fusion and getting Hot Rats , Waka Jawaka and Grand Wazoo which made me revisit Them Or Us and get an even greater appreciation of it. Still need to get much more Zappa than I have, however ther's so much of it and so many other things to get its a bit of a long slow process.

Thank you so much for this . I re-checked out Us and Them last week and re - loved them. I think, tell me if I’m wrong, but some tracks are Wackerman’s drumming. I think he has something I’m not sure how I’d describe it other than fluidity. What’s for a super Album, and what’s for proper place with Mile’s Davis’ and John’s Coltrane. My door to Zappa was Freak Out ! , Waka Jawaka, And’s Apostrophe. Which is, from what I’ve heard, the crux of the biscuit.

Back in those days when I was a youngster attending concerts you might hear people calling out for “Whipping Post”. It had become a thing all because of the Allman Bros. Live at Filmore where one of the audience is heard calling out for the song. Pretty soon at every rock concert by almost any band you might hear someone scream out “Whipping Post” during a quiet moment. You finally do hear it happen at a Zappa concert and Frank reacts with the Whipping Floss version of Montana. Zappa rarely covered other people’s music on his albums so later what a pleasing surprise when this album came out with a Zappa arrangement of Whipping Post showing us, I think, that he got the joke.

I think the first time I heard Zappa was on the radio, in 1974 or 75, probably one of his "radio friendly tracks - "I'm the Slime", "Dirty Love" or "Montana" It was probably "Montana", that got played a lot. Later on they played "Don't eat the Yellow Snow" quite a bit; he never really "got" to me until I bought "One Size", which will make anybody a Zappa fan! I'd write more, but I have to go deliver a bunch of string beans.

My gateway was Freak Out. I always wondered how Frank could make ‘The Return of the Son Monster Magnet.’ That is the most psychedelic recording in history. I think of him quite often. He is a voice that we need these days. One reason is that he would be near impossible to ignore. His rapier tinged tongue is sorely needed. Watching Kanye West last week again made me think of Frank. I believe he would be supportive of Trump, but with a highly guarded eye. Even Kanye criticized Trump’s family but still supports him. Perhaps the lesser of two evils. But Frank was leaps and bounds more articulate than Kanye. In the end, I miss Frank just having a presence on this planet!

The early 1980's are an interesting time in FZ's career. He was making interesting music and was becoming politically active in US politics. He, along with Dee Thomas of Twisted Sister and John Denver testified before a Senate committee that was investigating lewd and salacious lyrics in music. In the end there were warning labels placed on some records that contained explicit lyrics. The labels likely had the opposite of the desired effect: many people would buy the records out of curiosity. "Them or Us" is a great Zappa record but not my "gateway" album. "Absolutely Free" was the gateway album for me, along with "We're Only In It for the Money" and "Weasels Ripped My Flesh". I was hooked after that.

The 80s music scene was BARREN, my 70s heroes had given in to mediocrity (Floyd, Yes, Tull) but at least Frank was still at it. And then Us and Them: stupidity, cynicism, and soloing going nowhere. But it got you into him! Great.

Interesting take on this album. If I had compared it to One Size Fits All or Roxy perhaps I would have been less impressed?? But I had never heard those albums. But this album was astonishing to me and still impresses. His guitar solos for me are on another level on this album. And side two is FZ at his best for me...

On the one hand, just about ANY Zappa album could be a reasonable entry point into his music. That being said, I've always found his mid-80s albums like 'The Man From Utopia', 'Them or Us' and 'Thing-Fish' to be among his weakest. That never stopped me from liking them (or at least parts of them, 'cause there's something in EVERY Zappa album that I like or love), but he seemed to be on cruise control for a while then, presumably while he concentrated on his classical productions and the intricacies and frustrations of the Synclavier.

Thing Fish is not one of my favourites, Man From Utopia has some great moments with some mundane moments. Mothers of Prevention never gets talked about, but has some of his best compositions on there, some weaker tunes and his first foray into The Synclavier. Ship Too Late and Them or Us are masterpieces to me, amongst his best albums.

@@AndyEdwardsDrummer I'm a little older, so my entry point into Zappa was in late '67 (age 12!) with 'Absolutely Free', followed immediately by 'Freak Out'. That being said I love things from all points in Zappa's career (save maybe King Crimson or Miles Davis I have more music in my personal collection by Zappa than anyone else). From the '80s I'm partial to 'You Are What You Is' and 'Tinseltown Rebellion' in particular. I think all Zappa fans have their favourites. Back in the day most of my friends were crazy about 'Overnite Sensation' while I preferred 'One Size Fits All', and some of them couldn't figure out what I heard in 'Joe's Garage'...

I think Frank would probably be labeled a sexist/racist/homophobe if he was still around. He received some criticism even when he was alive for some of these things. He was an equal opportunity offender. I always viewed him as a fiscally conservative libertarian. But what do I know.

Oh yes....well said...I think my distrust of modern identity politics is rooted in the political veiwpoint I first got from FZ

But which one? There seems to be 3-4 different Zappas among his "fans" alone. Throwing all the periods together it seems that he always chose the wrong musicians at all times. It will be difficult for every judge's verdict. Then there is the fact that there is no separation between the author and the character. Was Shakespeare Hamlet? Was Zappa 4 or 5 or someone else entirely?

Andy I don’t know how dialed into civilization phase three you are but it has been the greatest failure of the trust to not present this monumental achievement. I know it’s dense but spend the weeks and you will break through to perhaps his GREATEST work of all. It up is a disgrace this is not on vinyl ..it was released 30 years ago. I remember reading about it before it came out. Then FZ died and we wondered if it would get released then I remember it coming out and then it seems to have been forgotten since then, but it was a big deal at the time.

Zappa was a conservative, closer to Libertarian, than anything else, but he didn't even really like any Libertarian candidates.
