The 1950's was a "golden age" for Sci-Fi movies. Them, It Came From Beneath the Sea, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, The Thing, Godzilla, The Fly, and so on. I can name quite a few more, but I'm sure you get my point. I was born near the end of the 50's, so, unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to see them in the theater. I love them all, though. A good movie along the same lines is "Matinee'" (1993) with John Goodman. It's about a similar type movie, shown during the Cuban missile crisis.

Incredible coincidence because i enjoyed this too each and every time it was shown first on New York's channel 2 (CBS) and in the late '60's on channel 9. Channel 9 had "Million Dollar Movie" and would show the same film twice a day during the week and 3 times on Saturday's and Sunday's. The Crawling Eye was ( and still is) an all time favorite of mine and "Them!" is definitely at the top of the list.....

I absolutely loved the horror and sci fi movies of the 50's. I saw them when I was a little kid in the late 60's and they were fantastic. Even some of the movies of the 40's like the original Wolfman with Lon Cheyney Jr. Good Stuff all the way round 😎

I liked how this one starts out. WB didn't make a lot of Sci-Fi flicks in the 50s, but the ones they put together were top-shelf. This one and The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms were two of the best from the 50s.

"Them!" is an awesome 50's classic monster movie. I also like: "Gojira (1954)", "20 Million Miles To Earth" and "The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms". "Gojira" was the best though (the original Japanese version).

They did a movie about giant scorpions, called "Black Scorpion." It was also caused by the nuclear testing. And, of course Godzilla came from these tests, too. There was a movie about a giant spider that came from a scientist doing strange experiments. Those were the good old days. Oh, yeah. There was also one with giant praying mantises. New movies could come from the effect of agent orange or something. Military use many secret weapons now.

Now this is what I call QUALITY science fiction film making! Started out as what I thought was a murder mystery and shot straight into science fiction film territory. Other QUALITY science fiction films of the '50's: The Day The Earth Stood Still, War Of The Worlds, The Thing, This Island Earth, Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, Forbidden Planet, Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, The Fly, 20 Million Miles To Earth, The Creeping Unknown, and Enemy From Space among the many GREAT movies of the 1950's...

@tobar1p In actuality the movie "Starship Troopers" was originally just a script called "Bugs". But when it came time to sell the movie they fleshed out plot holes by tacking on information from Heinlein's book and changed the name to "Starship Troopers". Which is why there are power armours in the movie like there are in the book, the power armours only work their way in by the third installment in the series.

I have always loved this movie; and i bought it through Amazon. There is just something about this 50's genre of movie making that was classic. Leonard Nimoy appears briefly as an Air Force sergeant in this movie; and Dub Taylor and Fess Parker also make brief appearances. What's lurking in White Sands New Mexico near Alamogordo??? ... giant Ants mutated from the first Atomic bomb test. This movie and the original Godzilla first debuted in 1954 - I wonder which was first to come up with the idea that atomic radiation from the bombs caused mutations to occur... the Japanese or the Americans???
@tobar1p9 жыл бұрын
The Americans with THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS (1953). It's what inspired Godzilla.
@josephrouleau92599 жыл бұрын
Fred Flintstone The Beast from 20,000 fathoms was the first picture to feature a creature awakened by a bomb test and I think this may be the first film to feature monsters mutated by the bomb. If I remember right, Godzilla marks the first time a bomb test resulted in the creation of a new kind of creature (as opposed to a simply a gigantic version of a preexisting animal) though.

@DarkDialga960 Exactly. The problem with today's big films is that there's no substance to them. They're all about the flashy special effects and completely neglect the story. Likewise, the majority of remakes fail to retain what made the originals so great because they focus on the wrong things.

This film started the idea of including some basic science concerning the 'monsters', film that is played for the heads of the US Govt. One of the best of the 50,s? How about one greatest monster movies of all time? A time when the "scare-factor" of a movie wasn't rated just by body count or gore. The monster and sci-fi movies of the 50's were true "classics". Some were genuinely brilliant, suspensful, and well-acted...while others were just hilarious. Either way, they can still be a lotta fun!
