The reason why people drank from the saucer (people don't do it so much these days) is because the shallow depth and the surface area cooled the liquid down much faster than if it was in the cup, meaning they could drink it sooner.

According to the buffers guide to etiquette (which is an enjoyable read) : 1. It's Scone rhyming with gone 2. You break the scone with your hands, not a knife 3. There's only two counties in England the order of jam and cream matters. In Devon it's cream first, then jam. Cornwall is the other way round.

This practice dates back to World War 2. During the German bombings of London, if the air raid sirens sounded, you had to act very quickly to reach the air raid shelters. No-one would waste a good hot cup of tea, and pouring it into the saucer would cool it down very quickly. My grandmother told me this.
