Over the years I've found a number of decent restaurants that I go to regularly, but it took time. I commend both of you for your fortitude. Eating bad food is not only unpleasant, but potentially dangerous. The worst experience I had, was I'm sure, from eating a potato salad that was past its best. I'll never forget the agony I underwent that night from severe stomach pain. I often get leg and shoulder pain (age), but that pain was on a very different level. It really is a mystery how such establishments stay in business

Great, honest review! This place was inspected and received a 4* food hygiene in Jan 2000!!!! wonder what happened and am astonished how is this place still operating in that part of London (with the expensive overheads etc) with no customers, no hygiene and serving the cheapest food available? Something shady must be going on

I visited this place on the early 2000s and even then the establishment looked cheap and cheerful. The food didn't win awards for the best in London but was acceptable and not nearly as horrid as shown in this video.

There's no way that place should be open. Whoever inspected that place back in 2020, and gave it a four star hygiene rating needs firing. Even a blind person could tell via their nose, that this place is an unhygienic dump. Something is very wrong when a place like this can stay open, especially with no customers. I'm actually curious as to the reason, is there an embassy near by, and is this business just a bugging and surveillance front. Who knows, but there's definitely something very strange going on here.

This kind of place is a good example of one of the main reasons fast food places such as McDonalds do so well. It may not be Michelin star quality food, but for the most part unlike independent restaurants you know exactly what you're getting. As a result of that you're not unwillingly going to get ripped off, and more importantly you're unlikely to have serious stomach issues a few hours later.

However; on a micro scale, I have personally witnessed procedures by various institutions; as have the public with high profile occurrences. The incompetence etc could not be put down to Tory cuts I can assure you; the several experiences I had were nothing to do with services being over stretched or under funded. It was certainly due to "other fings" Approaching explanations about societal issues through a macro viewpoint is fine; but you need to also delve into the micro for a deeper and richer answer

This cafe is on my route to work and has been closed for most of this year and last due to lockdown restrictions. It sits next door to a nice looking cafe that appears to be everything an eating establishment should be - windows letting light in , clean looking interior, menus with tempting choices at competitive prices ( basically doing everything right) This red shuttered affair that the lads have frequented is a curio along the lines of a haunted house that you pay to visit but cower from the waiter, film the ghostly/ghastly food and try and scarper away with your life. I think I'll give the non-abysmal cafe my patronage.

I can't believe you said how great London is. And advised people to vist. I live in London and its a hell hole. It's not a great place to visit. You can't out at night without the fear of being robbed or stabbed. You can't drive anywhere without the fear of getting a fine for the smallest of things. The rent is unaffordable and council tax through the roof. We have a mayor that's destroyed the city even more. London is the last place I would recommend people to visit.

I did read (in Private Eye) that a number of dire shops in high rent areas-ie prime locations-are used and owned by criminal gangs to launder cash which explained how a shop selling tacky London souvenirs could pay same rent that high end retailers were. Apparently (according to PE) the cops know about it but do zilch. Dont know about this cafe-obviously the owners couldn't give a damn about zero income, they've somehow kept the health inspectors at bay and are-presumably-happy to pay the premium rent.

Over the last few months, my local paper has been publishing food hygiene ratings for dozens of establishments in my town. Environmental Health Inspection is really, really strict. To get 3 stars means "OK" but everything has to be spotless and health and safety procedures adhered to. Everything stored correctly, at correct temperatures, on the right shelves, labelled with dates, etc. To get 4 stars means "above and beyond", 5 stars is like a Michelin star for hygiene. Almost all of the cafés, takeaways, restaurants and bars reviewed in my town get 4 stars, a lot gaining 5 stars. The care home where I worked until I retired last August had a 5 star rating. EHO keeps the bar high for everyone. Though I would be perfectly happy to eat in a 3 star café tbh, those with the rating often voluntarily close, are deep cleaned and / or refurbished and reopen. This café wouldn't be open a week in Bromsgrove. EHO would receive a complaint, inspect without warning, and shout as she might, the owner would be ordered to close immediately. No ifs or buts. This is why I would not visit London again, ever
