I remember this. Mister Softee is still all over Brooklyn, but I wish we need the old 1960 Mister Softee jingle back, people has not heard it since the 1990’s. Other ice cream trucks that were not Mister Softee used the original 1960 version of the jingle. But this one was used with Nichols Electronics Mark II or Mark IV ice cream truck music box from the 1970’s.

I used to see Mr Softee in other neighborhoods on occasion but in my Bronx neighborhood (Wakefield) in the 70s/early 80s we had Charlie the ice cream man who came around each summer. He was an older gentleman, a grandfather-type, who wore a small red ski hat, a white shirt, brown pants and had a change belt and unlit cigar. He had an “open” truck - no doors and I think a canvas roof and the ice cream freezer in the back. He used to ring his bells when he arrived on the block and everyone ran inside to get money. He used to let us kids sit in his truck and ring those bells. Gave us free ice cream on our birthdays. One day - I forget when - a Mr. Softee truck came on the block and all of us kids boooed and chanted “We want Charlie! We want Charlie!” til the truck drove off and ain’t come back. We were FIERCELY loyal to Charlie!! I don’t recall when he stopped coming around (each summer there was a rumor he had died until he showed up 😁). Later on Mr Softee eventually started coming around but I was a young adult by then. So Mr Softee wasn’t part of my growing up experience in NYC but I definitely remember that truck and dang song. 😁
