@@erickaminski3184 In some ways, it would be better to monitor and let the newly fallen leaves burn. The more they mulch and build up over the years, the deeper the fires become, until enough heat is produced to set branches alight. Watching this video, I think to some extent this was what they were doing. They did not seem too bothered where the circles of fire were going out in the center. Where they got the ladder in, branches were becoming involved. This method is quite common here in the UK. Huge areas of grass are left blackened and burnt at this time of year, but in the spring the areas are far more lush and green due to the fertiliser left by the fire. In turn, with no dead dry vegetation underneath, these areas rarely catch on fire. In our national parks all this is controlled by the rangers and at this time of year they select the weather for a few controlled burns. They rarely need any assistance from the fire department and when they do arrive, it is mostly as a result of a call from a member of the public. Like everything, forestry needs management. I am fairly sure the the situation in California has resulted from decades of neglect.

Once again I love how you show how the FD&Y handles all types of calls not just building fires, vehicle fires but brush fires and unusual types of fires. I get what you're saying about how it smells when I used to run volley and had to do brush fires always loved how it smelled from the woods burning. It sucks it's burning but I'm glad it's not somebody's house or a property getting destroyed. It's also funny that their solution is always a tower ladder

It would help if they (the engines near these large wooded parks) had the proper tools to work on woodland fires and be able to create fire breaks (fire rakes & digging shovels). Those flat shovels do not word in hard pack soil as you could see. The proper way to attack is to build a containment break around the area, then surround and drown. Your positioning went from good , when you were in the black, but when you went into the unburned area uphill of the fire, you put yourself in high danger as a pickup in the winds could cause the fire to move up that hill faster than you would be able to move! The firefighters have their turnout gear to protect them somewhat, in that scenario, but you would not stand a chance. I’ve worked my share of brush fires and learned all that from more veteran firefighters and officers, who have worked on major forest fires , alongside forestry and smoke jumpers. Having control burns helps prevent this type of hilly terrain fires . The use of the tower ladder was a good idea, they should have also placed some at the highway below. They also needed members utilizing Indian packs working the smoldering areas of the black. It is grueling tedious work.and the members did a great job of improvising and adapting to fight this fire. The weather does not cause the fires, it is careless or criminal acts by humans who cause these fires.

There's a really cool short video of a company using a drone attached to a small water line to power wash homes, especially tall multi story homes. Something that would be cool for fire depts to use in situations like this. It would work similar to a tower ladder, but run by a drone instead of a ladder. They just need a water supply to hook the hose to and a drone large enough and powerful enough to carry the line, which are available. I'm sure the military uses them.

Well this is a bit different that usual. Thats a forest fire they are fighting. There are brush fires, wildfires, and forest fires all over the place due to this extended span of dry weather. That smouldering stuff on the ground is very hard to extinguish. One time I had a small smouldering fire deep in a bed of pine needles in my yard . I put water on it, I dug into it and hit it with my water can until I saw no signs of fire and 15 minutes later I come back and it was still smoldering. The stuff smouldered for two days until it finally rained and it got soaked up good.

Not nessesarily. In addition to the dry weather it has also been windy. In those conditions a brush fire can easily jump from one spot to another and then to another. This is what often happens out in California where the wildfires will start in one area and next thing there will be pockets of brush burning all over the place.
