Tiger Shark Grabs a Sea Turtle: What Happens Next Surprised Me

In this video, I share additional footage I've not shown before of the first aerial documentation on record of tiger sharks attempting predations on sea turtles. As a result, continued monitoring of this bay has ensued by local scientists and the beach is now closed to human water activities. This is why I'm on my way back to this small island. Stay tuned for more!
This footage was captured during my visit to Fernando De Noronha. It is an island located 300 miles off the northeastern coast of Brazil.
THIS VIDEO IS A COLLECTION OF MY PRELIMINARY OBSERVATIONS. FURTHER STUDY BY SCIENTISTS IS ONGOING.
Co-existing with the sharks on the island is a major goal of local of the research being conducted there. Please refer to the studies below to learn, not just about the uniqueness of the tiger sharks at this island, but to also learn about the research being conducted there today.
Research Link to Learn about Shark Research around the Island
ecofisiotubaroes.weebly.com/
biancarangel.weebly.com/
Current Research Projects include tagging via satellite transmitters to track movements in order to understand if sharks are actually becoming residents, if there are sharks that migrate and others don't, and what might encourage them to migrate or not.
Furthermore, there is evidence of females with courtship marks. As a result, scientists want to understand whether they remain in the archipelago, feeding and gestating their babies in these productive waters, or if they migrate to other places.

More awesome footage Carlos. 0:47 congratulations. That was absolutely amazing to watch. I really hope that Fernando De Noronha becomes a much needed shark sanctuary. Do you think you might even have a chance of filming a tiger shark successfully predating on a turtle? 🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈

Extraordinary shots, Carlos. It's a great place to visit. For those looking for feeding activity, it isn't uncommon to see lemon sharks hunting large shoals along the Sancho beach. And the visitor can see it from one point in the Dolphin/Sancho trail. Greetings from Fortaleza/Ceará/Brazil.

Carlos, as always you bring us unique & remarkable discoveries. I love looking at footage of tiger sharks (underwater w divers) but was afraid to watch the turtle being devoured - I know check boxes & balances in nature but was relieved that the turtle got the upper fin - as others have observed- wow those turtle can muster up adrenaline - who knew?! Thanks so much for this 'Malibu Artist' treat!

Incredible footage yet again. The things that drone can capture that we've NEVER be able to see is truly unbelievable. That turtle hauled butt into that reef and the way it turned it's back shell side to protect itself from being bitten. Tiger's are slow moving sharks at least the ones i've seen. But the burst of speed they have when they want is truly amazing. But the turtle even more so i never realized just how fast they could swim.

Incredible videos. I'm not from Fernando de Noronha but I am from Pernambuco which is the state the island is part of. I'm sure you've heard about Recife, which is part of the same state and where a lot of shark fatalities happen. Have you ever visited those beaches? I know the water is fairly turvy but cant helps it wonder about drone footage of those waters.

I was mesmerised watching that footage. Everything there is pristine and beautiful and underneath there is normally an unseen part of nature that goes on. The Tiger shark v’s the Sea Turtle. Wow! I thought both those turtles were goners. Those little buggers are clever, manoeuvrable and very fast, not like the tortoise 😂 I guess having a Tiger shark as a predator nature has equipped them not only with the tough shell but other capabilities. As for the sharks 🦈 I’m sure they learn more as they get older and larger too. I always find it fascinating that each creature knows what to do. For example you said Carlos that the Tiger shark “herds the turtles into shallower waters to make it easier for them to catch them”. Is this another innate behaviour? They are born with this knowledge just like the turtle’s escape rolls. Nature and it’s creatures are so special and I really appreciate all your videos and knowledge very much. Thank you! 🙏❤️

i think what you will find is that the shark is not trying to push the turtle to shallow waters its just relentlessly repositioning on the turtle until the turtle gets tiresome of facing away from the shark and when that finally happens the shark will try get a bite with purchase on the turtles fin these sharks tediously fail on turtles and they know that to try trick the turtle into letting its guard down a fast dash between the two of them is inevitable if the shark bolts for the turtle straight away shark knows to make its first bite count

Sharks go for the turtle fins, the soft bits, first turtle protected its fin by rolling on it side, second one might have used a different strategy to protect its fin, might have been trying to bury it or something along those lines, hard to tell.

Here's a possible behavioural theory... This Tiger Shark clearly targets the turtle's front flippers, since those are the ones that allow rapid swimming, as we saw in the first instance. When you look at Tiger Shark attacks on humans, it's very common to read that the victim was grabbed by the arm, initially at least. Compared with GW, Bull Sharks, etc., which often attack from behind, biting the legs. I spent time in South Africa studying GW sharks 20 year's ago, and it's interesting watching specific behaviour, even between same species shark's of different size, sex, etc.

There’s a contradiction here. How does a shark get to be a size that dwarfs a full grown turtle if it were as inexperienced as claimed? On the other hand, how easy do u think it is to stop a fairly agile armoured disc using just your teeth with your body weight?
