Yeah in FM22 and now in 23 I've avoided using team instructions for stuff like marking, pressing, and tackling. Instead I started using individual player instructions combined with opposition instructions. Like you, I didn't want some of my players going in hard, and I didn't want certain opposition players pursued in that manner. Use PIs and OIs instead of team instructions. The downside is you have to tailor each game to your opposition for that next game, but I think that actually makes you pay closer attention to who you're playing. I don't think you can just plug in one tactic and nevr make any adjustments anymore. You have to scout and adjust to your opposition much more than in older versions of FM.
@TheManagersSeat

I definitely seems to give the team more shape and structure doing it this way. Will plug and play tactics be a thing of the past now?
@slovinho
@slovinho Жыл бұрын
Paul, how do you do that in FM22? Is it similar to methods in TMS' video?
@paulb4604
@paulb4604 Жыл бұрын
@@slovinho Yes, pretty much. My biggest focus going into any match is to try to determine what their best passing combinations are and using trigger press OIs to try to break up those passing lanes. I figure if the opposition is having trouble completing passes they'll have trouble scoring. The catch, especially with OIs, is that they can pull your players out of position. For instance if you tell your RB to trigger press or mark tightly their LW, and the LW is playing inverted or inside forward, or even has the instruction to cut inside with the ball, and your RB follows him, now the RB is potentially out of position. The same goes for using PIs to tell a player to specifically mark an opposition player or position. They just did a video on that as well. To me that's an even bigger problem with your players getting out of position and so therefore i rarely use those instructions.
@slovinho
@slovinho Жыл бұрын
@@paulb4604 So you are mainly using pressing and agressive/passive attack on the player in OIs, right? You're leaving tight marking alone?
@paulb4604
@paulb4604 Жыл бұрын
@@slovinho Yes that's mostly correct. The problem for the way my teams are built is that I tend to go after big strong players who may not be all that fast, which could create an issue if I ask them to mark tightly. If my guy has ACC 12 and SPD 12 and I ask him to tightly mark an 18/17 player, that's not going to work very well.

Great Video and a good way to apply pressing for sure, but I think you can get a better result with the basic instruction if you move the line of engagement further to the front. In FM the graphic doesn't align with the instructions, what you use in the video is pretty much the default and tells the players they should start applying pressure pretty much at the middle of the pitch is it says "mid block". So if your opponent plays with deeplying playmakers like in the examples, they are open to make long passes from their half to the wings and abuse the lack of pressure in their half. What you did was also very interesting, because its a way more detailed way of instructing team press, I very like that. But I don't see a general problem to also use the team tactics, because when you move the engagment higher, you have a semilar effect, just not as focused. So I would say generally move your line of engagement for deeper pressing, but if as you explained in the video, want to bring the opponent to move the possession to specific areas of the field, like the fullbacks, this video makes a great example how to do this, without overloading the tactical instructions.

Thank god I’ve seen this video it’s been driving me mad how little players where pressing as a unit. I’ve been playing 3 at the back so should be outnumbering attackers and the game just doesn’t seem to be able to understand how flexible they should be as they never cover each other or will all run for the same ball or player leaving huge gaps.
@TheManagersSeat

Hopefully, some opposition instructions might help. It should help you shut down the opposition in midfield more and you could always experiment with assigning one of your back 3 as a man-marker if the opposition have one man up front

Nice video! I’m new to FM so I have some rookie questions. Is it always necessary to select tactics. For example work into the box or shoot on sight? Or is it ok to leave unselected? What are the lines connecting some players in the tactics screen? Are star ratings that important? Thanks!
@TheManagersSeat
@TheManagersSeat Жыл бұрын
Those are all good questions. Firdtly, it's absolutely fine not to tick every box (in fact, you probably shouldn't, especially if you're working with players from lower league clubs). Only tick the boxes you think are essential to your tactic. I normally only tick one or two boxes. The lines indicate how well those players have played when in the same starting line up. A dotted line between players means they have played badly together and don't have a good rapport. A solid line means they've played well together and have a good understanding And finally, are star ratings important? Depends who you ask! I've seen videos where people have said they are useless, whilst other people think they are valuable. The thing to remember about star ratings is that they are your Assistant Manager's opinion of how good a player is in comparison to the rest of your squad/other players in the division. A player can be rated 5 star, but if you move up a position he might only be rated as 3 star. It doesn't mean he's got worse, just that he's now up against tougher opposition.

@TheManagersSeat
@TheManagersSeat Жыл бұрын
@@EDTeo The decision on whether to press the full backs depends on a couple of factors. If you're playing a high press, you'll probably want players going and engaging the opposition full backs so that you can win the ball higher up the pitch. However, if you are trying to play a lower block, you might not want to stretch your team out and disrupt your defensive shape by chasing after full backs when they are on the ball in their own half. However, in the example of Bayern's full backs, you play much higher up the pitch, almost like wingers, you may decide that you're prepared to sacrifice shape in order to shut down their danger men. It's pretty nuanced this year. Feel free to '@' people in the tactics section of the discord and we can get some screen shots going of the different instructions people use

You can set it before each game if you wish, or you can do it at the start of the season and it'll be used as a template for all fixtures. On your first day in the job, go to your tactics page and click on the 'opposition instructions' tab. You'll see that it has every possible playing position that you might come up against during the season. If you set the pressing, tackling and marking instructions for each position, the game will automatically apply them each time the opposition uses that position. If I didn't explain that very well, jump in The Managers Seat discord and just '@fmllama' in a message and he'll show you some screenshots to explain

Marking requires your players to be out of position to follow a man, it's extremely unhealthy to have that many marks., look at your teams attributes do anyone even have green marking on most of the players that is *near* the people you want to mark? Marking strikers is usually done by a defender that can have good marking and other attributes, but you seem to EXPECT your striker to be a world class marker, not only is he a horrible marker he also has a horrible position sense, so all you do is making a version of the headless chicken dance.
@FMLlama
@FMLlama Жыл бұрын
In the video, the 3 central defenders of the opposition are left with no opposition instructions on them, so the striker isn't EXPECTED to mark anybody at all. Even if he were, the striker is Tammy Abraham, who has aggression of 14, bravery 15 and teamwork of 16 so should be a suitable candidate to close down defenders. In addition, his poor marking will be negated to an extent by the opposition defenders poor off the ball movement. The striker does not need to be a 'world class marker' when the defenders he is near have similarly poor off the ball movement. Koffi Djidi, one of the Torino defenders in this video, has off the ball movement of 6, for example. This is equal to Tammy Abraham's marking. In total, only FOUR players were tightly marked in this video. 2DM's and 2AM's. Included in the Roma midfield are Cristante (marking 12, positioning 13) and Pellegrini (marking 11, positioning 11), Karsdorp (11, 11) and Zalewski (10, 10) with Matic coming on as a sub (marking 13, positioning 16). For context, in the Torino midfield were Ricci (off the ball movement of 12) and Linetty (off the ball movement of 13). You may notice how the marking and positioning of the Roma midfield is broadly similar to the off the ball movement of the opponents they are up against and, in the case of Matic when he came on, superior.
