This video demonstrates the simplest method of taking accurate UTM coordinates and grid references. It’s not necessary to measure or estimate, but rather you should use the scales printed on to your compass.

Really good and useful videos. I am a sailor and we use navigation of course in a slight different way but your videos are great. Thanks and I hope you can get more subscribers.

One point to take into account in North America is if you use WGS84 or NAD27. In Canada, we use WGS84. But they still use NAD27 in the continental US. So if you give a coordinate near the border, the coordinate can change for a same place depending if you use a Canadian map or a US map. For example, 18T 0611826E 5039673N in WGS84 is 18T 0611792E 5039459N in NAD27 (for the curious, it's the coordinate of an office tower and a shopping mall in Montreal, Quebec Canada).

It works in UK, but I've found it doesn't work in Norway. A 6 figure grid reference repeats every 100km, north, south, east or west. If you're reporting the position of a casualty over difficult communication conditions (I have), it can get fraught in a big country, as the emergency services don't know which position you are at: is it the 621832 to the west, or to the east? Reading out a full UTM coordinate runs to about 15 figures, and although it will put your position within the correct county, at least two of the digits well get mixed up in transmission. The solution is to revert to maritime coordinates, eg 59degrees, 52 minutes, 15 seconds north, 008 degrees, 14 minutes, 20 seconds east. A GPS will give the position in this format. By breaking it up in to 2 figures followed by a word, it's much more likely to be relayed accurately when voice conditions are poor.

How should you determine a location if you are at the edge of the map, and the left or bottom grid line isn't available?

You're going to have to work backwards from the nearest line you can see above and to the right
