I would not class myself as a car mechanic, I had very little money when I bought my first car/van it was a mk 3 escort, this was in 1990, showing my age. But I always I did any repairs on all my cars from ford to mercs to bmw. My last was a ml320. Because of my ill health I no longer drive. The hardest job I ever did was a c220 estate starter, it was a struggle so was done with the use of about 4feet of extensions on my socket which was a bugger because it was snowing. But never the less I did every job myself. Great stuff guys

I fix my own car because I refuse to play $90 an hour to someone slightly more skilled than a basic trainee on $20 an hour and then have the cheek to double the price on parts they buy compared to what I can buy them for at retail price, and they buy them cheaper at trade prices.

I lost count of the number of times garages did either a shoddy job and didn't tighten bolts properly so things fell off on the way home, or tried to rip me off on some parts that didn't need replacing (Refused to show me the old part too- never tell them it's super urgent if you can avoid it, they see the desperation and know your are more likely to Just pay the extra cost and leave). If you find a good garage then use them when you can, with any big job, but it is worth getting handy as best as you can, but still.. peeps have got to know their limits, a lot of jobs need special tools and experience to do properly. Some Technical knowledge and ability is necessary even with fluid changes and wheel changes.

Coppergrease used to be used by mechanics many years ago on the old single "Lucar" type connections of pre 70s cars. Many times these connectors were two dissimilar metals, so without something they would corrode very quickly. Using dielectric grease is more of a modern idea.
