It was one of the first though. In its time, at least the anime, was not really generic, as it would be compared to now. This came out before SAO and the boom of isekai. There were still isekai before this, but not much in number. The character tropes were probably generic though. However, unlike Konosuba, this actually wants to have a good plot. Konosuba's job, on the other hand, is to make light of the mass-influx of isekai. It kind of sucks that Familiar of Zero is not on Isekai Quartet, although it is really good.

The author of the original novel the anime is based on died before the series was finished (in cancer if my memory serves right.), but the ending of the last season is supposedly based on the notes he left behinds so the ending is probably what the canon ending would have been and it's really good.

So many authors have either died or left their work unfinished. Such as J.R.R. Tolkien. Granted unlike the author of Familiar of Zero who died far too early, Tolkien died an old man, but still there was so much more to tell us about his amazing world of Middle-earth. Even though he did write an awful lot about Middle-earth there were still things he didn't fully explain. Same goes for the author of Familiar of Zero, so much more to tell us, yet left us far too early.

Through a series of events it is found out that Saito is the Gandalfr(right hand of god)-i believe that is what is called. Whenever he picks up any weapon meant for combat use, he masters the weapon on the spot and becomes really kickass for no reason. Though he may have this power, he isnt an overpowered character. Everyone in the series relies on eachother often to solve the many fights and situations they allways find themselves in.
