Two additional thoughts: 1. For difficult topics or classes try extra problems in addition to assigned homework - especially ones that have answers you can check. I only did this completely for a full class with Physics 2 because I was disappointed with how I did in Physics 1. 2. If your professor hands out practice exams or tests from previous years then use it! They sometimes do this to offset the advantage to those members of fraternities/sororities whose organizations keep records.

I would also add 1) find you strong personal reason to get though the class -- it is __not__ about motivation in the end 2) you should decide for yourself that studying is very personal thing and you can make your own way to do better: maybe you prefer to learn from home on video rather be in the class itself or you prefer book rather groups so nobody judge your performance. Your performance can be better if nobody stops you and your performance can be worse if you compare yourself with anybody, just find your vibe 3) it's cool just google something, sometimes you can just find video on youtube with a better explanation or that explanation would be from a different angle I want to get back to university :(

My experiences were almost identical to yours. I always made an effort to do all the homework. I would occasionally skip a class but I would never skip a math class. Even in a non-proof based class I would always strive to try and understand the proofs of any theorems I would encounter. I was also the type person who would rarely ask questions although with a rigorous study routine I was usually able to get a firm grasp on whatever it was I was uncertain of. Asking questions would have been helpful though. With regards to the Calculus I probably found first semester Calculus 1 to be the hardest of the Calculus courses. Second semester Calc 2 and Multi-variable Calc 3 came easy to me.

good solid advice.the most important thing of course is to study by 'personal concentration' and not by coercion either social or personal, that is, doing it for your self because you want it and enjoy it.

asking questions helps to clarify your ideas. Also when speaking about the topic, either by asking questions or talking about it in a study group it helps you picture the ideas, rehearse the vocabulary and provide you with a positive experience, which in turn, helps you to retain information in your long term memory. Memories are also stronger when you take a break from a task. There is something about sleep that helps you retain information into your long term memory. Taking a break lets your mind rest from an activity of learning. I agree with all these points. When I went to school no one did study groups, or if they did, I never knew about it. I did know how to study. These are all great points you make. I hope the students really take this to heart. Learning should be a passion. Even if you don't like something you are doing, you have to make to experience positive and think it is the greatest thing you have ever done.

2. Go to every class without skipping 4. Ask questions in class Outside of wanting to do well, people can also think of this as getting the most out of their tuition dollars, suddenly things such as asking questions sort of stops seeming embarrassing. You are paying for it and are there so make the most of it.

I like this..I think you can tell the difference between the scholarship students, and those of us paying out of pocket. Some people will go the first day to get the Syllabus, and won't be seen again until there is an in class Test to do:). Then you have people like me who get excited when the Professor runs a few minutes over the alotted time, as I feel like I've just got a freebie!

Excellent. But the first thing to do to excel at math or any other subject is to develop a taste for it if one already hasn't. Mathematics has many branches and subjects with different levels of hardness which in turn varies from person to person.

I do 1, 3, 4, and 5. Though admittedly 1 is sometimes extremely hard or even impossible to do so 1 is like a 50/50 of me doing it to be honest. For #2... I am working on it lol. Sometimes the urge to sleep through my first class wins, sometimes I skip class to do homework for another class. Typically I am really good at going to my math classes, decent at going to my computer science classes, and bad at going to my stats classes, though I am working on it to get all to at least good even if not perfect lol (I am triple majoring in those three things so it is all important)

I would ask questions in class that are of general interest. Ask any questions in office hours. Hang around office hours to hear other people's questions, very useful. Study the matter before the class, have questions in mind. Ask questions at the end of class if possible. Review intensely just before the test as well as well before. Yes, study groups are great.

I used to make up my own questions before tests. I'm talking about what I did in junior high and high school and it wasn't for math class. A bit off topic, I guess. But it relates to studying for test. I'd read somewhere at the time, that teachers would make their own questions for tests. The tip suggested we make our own questions because our invented questions might overlap with the questions the teachers make up for the test. It helped me in my history and science classes. Never tried it for math classes, and I don't know if someone could make up their own questions for math. So I would suggest the best thing to do to study for math, is get math books and do the problems. The answers are in the back of the book so you can check your answers. I guess do that before a test to get some practice. . I wished there had been a KZbin and eBay when I was in junior high and high school. I would have done so much better in math. I think KZbin is great for watching math videos and eBay gives people access to books on almost any subject
@patrickpatrick8124
@patrickpatrick8124 Жыл бұрын
Personally I'd not reccommend to make up your own question for the simple reason that they'll be not as challenging. Solving problems that force growth and reflection are key and while studying a topic yourself, you're not in the position yet to formulate them. Also there will be no solution to check your answer. Just ask your teacher or use textbooks that are recommended for class.
@anniesizemore3344
@anniesizemore3344 Жыл бұрын
@@patrickpatrick8124 Yes. After I wrote that, I realized inventing questions for math wouldn't work. Just wouldn't work. I actually did edit my comment to clarify it. I did that for some of my subjects and did well, but I never invented questions for math. I would invent questions and look the answers the up. I almost always got A's or B's in the subjects I did that in. Mostly history and science. For math, I repeat: just get a lot of books and do the exercises that are related to whatever is going to be on the math test. Someone can check their answers in the back of the book and see what they are having trouble with. You have good ideas too.

When I was an undergrad chemistry student, I used to go to these weekly seminars where visiting professors would give talks about their research. I noticed that one of the upperclassmen--a really smart guy--would always ask pretty basic, almost "dumb" questions. Basic enough that I felt that even I could answer them myself. After a while it occurred to me that one of the reasons he was so smart was because he had no fear of "looking dumb" by asking a question--he was 100% focused on thoroughly understanding the material. That inspired me to speak up more often when I felt like there was something I didn't understand in class, and I became a much better student because of that.

Get familiarized with the next lectures material BEFOREHAND In doing this, you will have already become acquainted with the new ideas, terms, and questions. It'll make the lecture easier because you'll hear this "new" stuff and think, "oh yeah I read about that" instead of having to take it in all at once. If you practice learning a certain topic, the second time you attempt to learn it will be easier.

I don't like skipping class, but there's this one teacher who ignores all my answers, acts like he can't hear me when I ask anything, and generally people just repeat my answers and talk over me especially in his class and when i try to speak up i'm "making a big deal out of nothing" and "being hysterical". As one of the only 2 women in this class, I can't help but wonder if i'm ready to keep facing stuff like this if I continue in the STEM field..

As a grokking comp sci student lacking in the math department, I decided to take abstract algebra this semester to improve my understanding of math, proofs and grasp abstraction better. Since teacher is superb, and the subject matter is hard(for me), not only do I not dare to miss a class(don't want to fall behind), I look forward to attending them because they are fun(a good challenge is always fun), and as a consequence, I have adapted most of these habits.. Naturally, a good teacher can(and will) have that impact, especially when they demand more from their students, which can really reinforce these habits..

Can someone help me with some maths? So I asked chatgpt and it told me this: My question: A Vaccine has a number-needed-to-vaccinate-to-prevent-one-case of 100. The lethality of the illness is 0,00002%. How many persons do you have to vaccinate to prevent one deadly case of the illness? Answer: To calculate the number of persons that one would have to vaccinate to prevent one deadly case of the illness, you would need to divide 1 by the number-needed-to-vaccinate-to-prevent-one-case (100) and then divide that by the lethality rate of the illness (0.00002%). 1/(100*0.00002) = 5,000,000 So, one would have to vaccinate about 5,000,000 persons to prevent one deadly case of the illness. Keep in mind that these are hypothetical numbers and the actual numbers may vary depending on the vaccine and the illness. Also, this is based on the assumption that the vaccine is 100% effective which is not always the case. But is this really true? Isnt 500.000.000 the correct answer? If it prevents 1 case in 100 injects, and every 5.000.000 cases 1 death occurs (100/0,00002), then you would have to vaccinate 500.000.000 (5000000*100) persons to prevent 1 death with the vaccine. Can you help me with whos right here?

This semester I had one mathmatician student on my Quantum Mechanics lessons and was so funny. Every time my physics teacher did some aproximations he said "I must be carefull with the guy, if not he will kill me". Was a very good experience for all of was, and I think Quantum Mechanics is a very good class to get if the mathmaticians are really into to Linear Algebra, the course is basically that, with only some details of physics. The math sorcerer if you want to do a video talking about your experiences do it, I really want to ear, the classes you got, wich do you liked more, and to talk about the approximations by physics, is allways a funny moment to talk. I have friend taking Physics in the minor of maths, he is taking a lot maths classes and he is starting to be converted to a mathmaticians, he is very precise with the math, and in some classes, like optics he hates, because that class have a lot silly aproximations. And if you want to show your books in phyiscs is incredible. Continue with your awseome work.
