If anyone else was confused about why the particular solution has an x^2, it is because we are dealing with repeated roots. Just like how when we have a characteristic equation with repeated roots we multiply by an x for each repeated root, in the characteristic solution we have two solutions, e^(x/2) and x*e^(x/2), so our particular solution will have to be x^2 * e^(x/2). To check, if we had chosen Ae^(x/2) as our particular solution, and plugged it into the DE, we would get 0 for the left hand side, and that makes sense since it is part of the homogenous solution.

I do not understand the final example of this lecture. Why is yp = A + B(x^2)(e^.5x)? Where did the x^2 come from?

WHat happens if when you are solving for yp, you dont get the correct form = RHS of original equation. Does that mean your modded yp was wrong?
