Should one look into the ideology that the consumption of specific media affects our day-to-day relationships, does that mean the consumption of specific texts that portray domestic/general abuse towards a partner or friend, encourages that abuse in reality? Or is it more complex than simply "I watch bad relationships therefore I am in one"?

at 2:23 the presenter is really bringing in the concepts of 'media dependency' and 'parasocial interactions' -- my reading of this element of U&G is that the media provide us with info that we can use to increase interaction with other real people, not necessarily the actors or characters within the media itself, though for sure that happens too (and again is explained by the above-mentioned concepts). the presenter does go on to suggest this at the 2:50 mark; this could have a bit more explication, but due perhaps to a desire to keep the video brief, it has to suffice.

Great video! Just one question. How can I link this information, such as the theories, into either my question A or question B in my AS media studies exam? I.e. How and where can I use them in my paragraphs?
@TheMediaInsider
@TheMediaInsider 8 жыл бұрын
+David Jones In truth, you don't need this for Q1 - that one is marked entirely on technical aspects of media representations (camera angles and such). If you get a question for Q2 that mentions audience, it certainly wouldn't hurt to be able to explain how the audience is gratified by one of your texts - but again, it's more about institution than media theory.

If Uses and Gratification theory proposes that the audience makes the choice to view a piece of text (if they're aware of it or not), wouldn't be counter intuitive when you tell us to be active, thus taking the gratification of figuring it out away from us? Please correct me but the video comes across as telling us, your audience, to recreate tropes associated with an artist's style to conform to a certain standard by analyzing the text in front of us. I know that tropes are tools and everything is borrowed to elevate ideas, but I thought we were trying to make our inspirations less obvious. I asked this because I have Aspergers, and the thoughts I had after watching the video, I believe, didn't match with what you're trying to say.

Someone recently mentioned to me the word "discovery" along with the Gratification theory...is it part of this? Or why people feel when consuming media?

Not one that I'm familiar with in relation to this theory - although it could come under 'surveillance' which is essentially discovery of new information to stay informed
