Mario doesn't have a timeline because Nintendo treats him and friends like a "troupe of actors" type of characters, like Mickey Mouse (Or Popeye, which was his inpiration and the one Miyamoto always cite when talking about that), which can fit in different settings without having to commit to a timeline. That's why one game he's a carpenter, in others he's a painter, a plumber, a doctor, etc.

Not quite. Mario was described as an "everyman", which means he is highly adaptable, depending on the style of the game. (sports, puzzles, fighting, action, rpg) Nintendo may not care about an official timeline but that doesn't mean we can't track the various professions/roles Mario has undertaken over the years. The plumber archetype is by far the most popular though, which is why the new movie is using that specific job type; it's the most recognizable. By extension, all his friends are also flexible. They have established character roles/traits but like us, they can choose to do anything they want outside of that. They're actually more human-like than traditional video game characters.

Mario is one of the most popular video game series out there, yet people don't really delve into the lore. When playing a Mario game, I do cars more about the gameplay than the story, but when replaying them sometimes I notice things (like Rosalina's backtory in Mario Galaxy or the seven star children thing in Yoshi's Island DS) that I didn't notice before. The stories in the Paper Mario games are also pretty interesting (in Japan, Paper Mario is actually called Mario Story so it taking place in a book makes a bit more sense), like Luigi apparently being the vessel for the Chaos Heart in Super Paper Mario. And the stories in the Mario & Luigi RPGs are also interesting. People don't really take me that seriously whenever I talk about the story or lore in Mario games, so I'm glad to find a video where someone actually tries to look into it.

Mario is a powrie. Makes a lot of sense, at least enough that it makes less sense to deny it. A type of cornish fairy, not unlike the little ones that SIT on TOADSTOOLS and frolic with the TOADS, but this one dwells more in castle ruins and structures. They are known for their RED CAPS and killing their enemies, by rolling rocks to STOMP them. Like, POW. He's a powrie. Another similar fae, associated with ghosts and will o' wisps, is the Bluecap. Prominently featured in early designs of Luigi is the blue cap, and either way Japan considers blue and green more shades of cyan anyway. Bluecaps wear WORK CLOTHES, also dwell in structures, but they are more helpful. In an OVA Luigi even is particualr about money, just like a BLuecap, while wearing his blue cap.

Donkey Kong 94 on GameBoy explains perfeclty not only the irigin of Super Mario, but the precise moment of transition from DK to SMB. You just have to play the game through to the end.

To keep things straight it's been proposed that Jumpman is Mario's Father. If so I believe Mario and Luigi are the twin brothers of Pauline; the one from Oddessy. Remember the Original Pauline had blonde hair; which could imply Pauline is the bros. Mother and the brunette version of her is their sister; either biological or a half. If this theory is wrong and Jumpman is NOT Mario's father and is instead him than I propose the argument that Luigi appears even EARLIER than that Game and Watch game because of Donkey Kong Jr. When Mario kidnaps Donkey Kong he has help from another Mario. That second Mario is either Luigi OR possibly Stanley. Stanley would make more sense with Donkey Kong 3. Anyway that's my 2 cents anyways.

Nintendo officially confirms that Mario is Jumpman. And Pauline is Lady. Donkey Kong 94 for GameBoy and Mario Odyssey made that clear. Especially with Pauline stating the event of the Donkey Kong Arcade game and festival dedicated going to obstacle of the Donkey Kong Arcade game. It's obvious that this whole "Jumpman is Mario's father" theory is disproven in the canon lore of Mario.

@@Nick-up5wv Nintendo originally written Mario as middle aged, but that's retconned for Mario to appear younger to appeal younger demographic as well in Nintendo's logic. Not much time has passed between Donkey Kong Arcade game and Super Mario Bros proven by Donkey Kong 94 for GameBoy and Myiamotto stating the timeline between the games. The reason why original Donkey Kong age to Cranky Kong while Mario didn't age much further is because apes age much faster than humans, that's a fact. Whether you like it or not, Mario is Jumpman is canon, along with Pauline being Mario's og girlfriend.

There's an old children's book from the 80s that sort of goes into how the Mario Bros. first discover a portal inside a warp tube, and end up smack dab in the middle of the Mushroom Kingdom and their plight against Bowser. Not too dissimilar from how events kick off in both versions of the Mario movies (live action and animated), though similarities end there. I always liked this; even if the mario_twins.flv are originally from the Mushroom Kingdom, they ended up in Brooklyn, NYC and don't find out until later. If I recall, there's also a bit of lore in the original game books.

The one thing that Mario's earliest designs/art has that current Mario doesn't have is character. Mario today is more mascot friendly and lost his personality over the years. I can see Mario become more expressive again in future games. At least I hope so.

You're referring to the cartoony arcade artwork, which is not an accurate measuring rod for what players experienced. Early in-game Mario certainly doesn't have any "character". Current Mario may be generically happy but at least he vocalizes excited sounds and phrases. What did the original Mario do, make jump sounds? Sure modern Mario doesn't have attitude but please take off your nostalgia goggles. In-game Jumpman/ early Mario just can't compare in that area.

The timeline seems simple enough, but there's something that always bothered me in regards to it. So Baby Mario and the Modern DK were both babies at the same time confirmed by Yoshi's Island DS. . .so why is Mario a full grown adult in the original Donkey Kong when who we know now as Cranky Kong is still in his prime? Modern DK likely isn't even born yet so how is this even possible?

Modern DK in Yoshi's Island DS came from the future, while the rest like Mario, Peach, Wario take place in the present during the events of Yoshi's Island DS. People seem to forget that Yoshi's Island DS has a time travel story going on. That's why adult Bowser made an appearance later on in the game. Modern DK is actually much younger than Mario, while DK the first(Who became Cranky Kong later on) met Mario when Cranky was still young during Mario's adult years in the DK Arcade series. The reason why Cranky age drastically later on, while Mario is still young is because Apes age much faster than humans. That's even proven by the DK family lore as well.

I remember an old Mario cartoon where the theme song mentions how he and Luigi "found a secret warp zone while working on the drain." And the live action movie also used parallel dimensions as a plot point (while changing pretty much everything else).

It's funny, I'd heard the popeye/mario connection but I never connected why it was taking place in a construction site. It felt not very popeye at first glance. But so many old fleischer cartoons see olive oyl or sweet pea sleep walking around a construction site with giant steel girders. The old popeyes rarely took place with him "at sea" and didn't really follow the comics. Most of the early 30's cartoons saw popeye living in an NYC tenement building and kickin around ny. Fleischers were great at that technical mechanical drawing on top of their surrealism and those construction sites were often featured because they're such a technical feat and just look cool. Great video.👍 One minor thing I would like to point out: You COULD use Mario's Time Machine to explain Yoshi's Island DS, but I think Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time better explains those events.😉 Also Mario's Time Machine sucks and isn't cannon anyway. I think the correct order is SMW:Yoshi's Island/Yoshi's Island DS, Yoshi's New Island, Yoshi's Story, Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time. Yoshi's Island 3DS; the one you're not counting in the lore, probably also happens after Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time, on a different time-line that still connects to the series. Maybe it happens after Galaxy and Galaxy 2 when the Mario Universe reset leading into Oddessy.🤔

So Mario and Luigi would be called the "Super *Jumpman* Bros." is the game title used their surname. 2) I'll *tell* you who their parents are; their father is the _king from world three / Ocean Side (from "Super Mario Bros. 3)._ THAT'S why that king looks like Mario; hence, Mario CAN marry Peach, and Luigi CAN marry Daisy. 3) Mario and *Waluigi* are in the construction business. Luigi went into plumbing. Wario is into Farming (and programming mini games). But yes, Wario and Waluigi *ARE* brothers to each other; they just don't know it. I don't get why pretending like this game isn't canon would keep things simple. Yoshi's New Island doesn't canonizes Bowser's Time Machine. In addition Bowser's Time Machine is not canon to the games since it contradicts the established lore of the games, and Nintendo had little influence on said game. The time travel of Yoshi's New Island and Yoshi's Island DS existents because of the events of Partner's In Time introducing Time Travel. After this game Bowser would gain the ability to travel through time. While Mario originally was intended to be a carpenter in Donkey Kong, he might actually already be a plumber at this time. I say this because in an interview Miyamoto when talking about the story of the Donkey Kong Arcade game he said "Mario, the plumber." I think this could actually fit because the type of plumbing we see Mario and Luigi performing makes them construction plumbers. Mario and Donkey Kong aren't actually enemies in the Donkey Kong games. The Game n Watch games alongside Wrecking Crew more than likely take place before the Donkey Kong games. So as stated before Mario might have already been a plumber back in Donkey Kong. As for the Mario Bros game, the events of this game takes place right before Super Mario Bros. This is because in Super Mario Maker a level was made by Nintendo called Did Somebody Call A Plumber? This depicts the events of Mario Bros and extended as Mario and Luigi make their way into the sewers fighting off Koopa Troopas, Spinys, and Fighter Flies. I believe they were sent Bowser knowing of the prophecy from Yoshi's Island. Also, no Mario Bros doesn't take place in the sewers of New York No, not all the bricks you break are Toads, only some are and when you hit these bricks you set them free. In the Super Mario Bros Manual under the Power Up section it is explained that when you find a block, invisible block, or brick that a Toad was turned into you set them free and they give you a Power Up as thanks. This only applies to the original games btw, because all blocks and bricks before and after this game are created in various different based on different technologies. Donkey Kong and Donkey Junior don't escape with their lives because it is established the Kongs aren't actively enemies to Mario, in addition Mario isn't trying to kill them as Miyamoto himself stated. Mario and Luigi didn't move to New York, New York doesn't exist in the Mushroom World. The character of Mario was based on an Italian American living in New York, this wasn't explicitly meant to be what Mario was in game. In addition while it's not Canon, the Mario OVA which came out a year after Super Mario Bros had Mario and Luigi existing on the same planet as the Mushroom Kingdom. With games like Donkey Kong 94 and Donkey Kong Land giving us the names Big City or Big Ape City as they established in games they took place on the Mushroom Planet. Mario and Luigi probably continue living in Big Ape City after Super Mario Bros before moving back to the Mushroom Kingdom.

I can't remember what KZbin channel pitched the following take on Mario's origin (Game Theory maybe?), but they threw out the idea that the Mario you play as in Donkey Kong is Mario & Luigi's father, and Pauline is Mario & Luigi's mother, and the Pauline we see in Super Mario Odyssey, is actually Mario's sister. I know that isn't officially confirmed by Nintendo, and probably never will be. Which is fine, but that's the origin that I subscribe to in my head canon.

That's definitely more fan-fiction territory since anyone can connect the characters however they see fit. There's no way to know how any Mario characters are supposed to have aged or met or if they're even from the same universe; how do you really know anyway? My headcanon says those theories are taking too many liberties with unsubstantiated information.

Nintendo got the rights to the game later (after they proved themselves), and it's pretty clearly Popeye, Olive Oyl, and Bluto. Just look up the Popeye arcade game on Google.
