The Grey Chapter is their hidden jem, I had listened to it but could never get into them, during quarantine I was more depressed than I had ever been and I connected with the album while re-listening to it. You can tell Jim, Jay, and Corey wrote most of the album but it’s so diverse and ambient, they have a lot of dark background noise going that you don’t catch if you aren’t listening carefully, also the vocal harmonys are amazing.

RIP Joey!! You made 13 y/o me wanna play the drums and your solos blow my mind to this day. Here're my thoughts on every Slipknot album I've heard (the two I haven't heard yet I'll probably never listen to cause they never interested me) Mate, feed, kill, repeat: Idk what to say about this one. Yeah it's fascinating, I love hearing what Sic, Gently and Iowa used to sound like, but it's so goddamn long and the songs last an eternity. I never come back to it. 3/10 Slipknot: Wow, the leap in quality is outstanding. The first 5 songs are one of the best 5 track runs of all time, Purity is incredible and some of the others deep into the record are fantastic as well. The rapping makes it a little dated but overall, 8.5/10. Also something I noticed about s/t and Iowa is that they used to write a lot of stories in their songs that they don't do anymore. The best examples are Wait and bleed, Purity and Iowa, they had these creepy stories they wrote that was just kinda lost in later Slipknot albums that I kinda wish would come back... Iowa: Holy shit, this album might be the angriest thing I've heard. Starting the album off with a literal mental breakdown is the most appropriate thing I've seen, the album is just so intense all the way through until the title track, a creepy, heavy and chaotic closer that's a quarter of the albums length with lyrics about killing someone to have sex with them, it's insanity. The album feels like a diary from a mentally ill serial killer (which the bandmates weren't too far off from being) all and all, 9/10 it's heavy as fuck to this day Vol 3: Haven't heard it nor do I care too, the singles never interested me besides Duality :( All hope is gone: Very underrated imo. This album, while it's not as interesting as their other albums it still has some of the heaviest songs they ever wrote like Gematria (the killing name) or the title track which sounds like a cannibal corpse song until the end where Sid Wilson spills coffee on his laptop lol. The albums production is a bit too clean for my taste but still, 7.5/10, it's great .5 the gray chapter: Also haven't heard. The devil in I goes hard af but again, nothing interested me. It just seems too long lol We are not your kind: Fucking phenomenal. Wow, this is a huge improvement. Unsainted, Critical Darling, A liars funeral, Spiders, Red flag, Not long for this world and Solaway firth are some of the best Slipknot songs and Orphan and Nero forte are amazing too. The album flows very well and tho the interludes don't always work, I still think this is a fantastic album. 8/10

I was very fortunate to see Slipknot three times through different line ups changes. The first with Joey and Paul, the second with Jay, Alessandro and Chris and the third with Michael Pfaff. I also was very very lucky to have a second cd of AHIG with Joey's signature and got their debut and WANYK signed by Mick the night before seeing them the third time. Btw Joey didn't leave the band, he was fired via email from the band because he was going through acute transverse myelitis which made me mad that they think differently without knowing what he went through before he went out of action with the band.

I remember when they dropped the S/T debut. I was watching MTV during the Ozzfest 99 tour. They were walking around and asked who people were there to see. They answered, “SLIPKNOT!!” They were the most hyped band there, even though they were on the second stage. They were far from radio friendly, but still so insanely popular without it. It wasn’t then (I was too young), but I eventually saw them 3 times live with the original lineup. While they do put on a great show, I felt like it was choreographed because it seemed they did the same thing each time. Still, I got blown away with Joeys sideways drum solos and still found myself screaming the lyrics back at the band (IF YOURE 555, THEN IM 666). They were one of my favorite bands through my teen and young adult years. Loved the albums up to Vol 3. It was very experimental and I get why people such as yourself didn’t care for it, but I did enjoy it. After Vol 3, I found myself not listening to them much. I remember hearing Psychosocial on the radio, but caring much for it. Fell off for a long time, haven’t heard any of the others. Recently, I’ve been returning to some of the stuff I used to listen back then and found myself loving it. S/T was my favorite, but after revisiting and listening, I have to say Iowa is their best. It’s one of those albums you out on and just sing along to every song. I agree with most people that say it was by far their best produced album. It changes often, but my current favorite track is probably Everything Ends. Also, just throwing it out there, Iowa debuted at number 1 when it came out. Maybe it’s just me, but that felt like quite an incredible feat. At the time, pop and rap were dominating the radio. So to have a metal band outdo them was really a testament to how powerful they were in the early 2000s.

Thank you for doing the video. I pretty much agree with your order. My ranking would be 1.ST - S tier 2. Iowa - S Tier 3. WAYNK - S Tier 4. The gray chapter - A ( I encourage everyone to Re listen to this album now that the End so Far is out) I used to hate gray chapter and something changed and it really is unbelievable. I don’t know what I was thinking in the past? Amazing album! Songs I would listen to are Sarcastrophe,AOV,Devil and I,Kill Pop, Lech, Nomadic,Custer,The Negative One, The Burden (from expanded edition, omg!!) listen to these and ignore the rest and it may change your mind. That’s still 9 great tracks though. It is so dark and Corey’s anger is killer and it really sounds authentic unlike vol 3 5. Vol 3 the subliminal versus - C+Or B- 6. All hope is gone C- or D+ 7. The end so far C- or D+ (below their standards for sure)(I do have faith that their next album will be great but I think it’s important the fans don’t sugar coat how much this album sucks or they’ll make another one) I’ve been a Slipknot fan since 1999, saw them on the Iowa and WANYK tour, greatest bad of all time next to Metallica. I actually really dig the absurdity of MFKR. At least, 2 of the songs I actually really enjoy. Do Nothing/Bitchslap just for how hilariously crazy it is and the random jazz and funk bits thrown in along with a banger of a bass line. That and the original version of Gently is fucking killer. I really like the opening acoustic guitars and how pretty it is before diving into the darker aspect of the song. That and how it builds up slowly to an epic conclusion. I'm not sure if I like the MFKR or Iowa version better. They're both so dope in their own way.

Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses - For me, if Corey’s voice was in better shape and the production on the album was better, this could have been such an album. 6/10 3. We Are Not Your Kind - If the 3 interludes weren’t on here and you take off ‘My Pain’ this album would be a solid 9/10. As it is, 7.5/10 2. Slipknot - For a debut album, it’s a classic. 9/10 1. Iowa. Even though I love most of All Hope is Gone I respect your opinion. I also think its great you were so into We Are Not You Kind. Everytime Slipknot puts out a new album so many fans go into a tangent on how they havent had any good albums since Self Titled and Iowa. And while I am nostalgic about those albums WANYK is my favorite because its newer and fresher and other than the mentioned filler which I always cut out of my playlists almost every song on there is really really good imo. I am also excited to hear new material. I will always respect a great bands past but as time goes on bands grow and diversify. And I always wanna support whatever they are doing now first and foremost. I assume unless they are just going through the motions that present material is most important to a band. Not always but often times. And obvioulsy alot of metal bands or bands in general arent able to recreate the magic they had early on when they were rising, but sometimes they do it in other ways. I also think I view older Slipknot very differently because I look to Slipknot for a different sound. As someone who listens to alot of really heavy or really extreme music and metal, their level of heaviness doesnt matter to me. But when their songwriting is interesting, now thats what gets me. I guess I just find the raw agression and brutality part of my enjoyment satiated in so many other ways by so many other bands and genres.

As a big Slipknot fan I think you were a bit harsh on some points, I absolutely love Vol. 3 and all of We Are Not Your Kind. Infatuated with tracks like Blister Exists, Duality, Pulse Of The Maggots,, Before I Forget, UnSainted. But I think as a metal reviewer you were fair compared to all the amazing competition. This period of Slipknot is probably not heavy enough for you but I love it. Thankyou for doing my fav! I saw them at Big Day Out Gold Coast 2005. They were sooo great!! My fav Metal is 1 Slipknot, 2 Metallica, 3 Tool. I had tickets to Metallica/Slipknot Oct 2019 but bloody Hetfield went into rehab and my tour got cancelled!!! Devastated. Would have been the concert of a lifetime in my home town. Feb 2020 we were so lucky to see Tool in our home Brisbane Aus. Luckily just before COVID hit. But have not been able to see any more live metal.

I’ve never really been into Slipknot. But that aside, r.i.p. Joey Jordison! Do the SOAD discography, that’s a short and merry one!

I was in middle school when I found my brothers Iowa cd, I popped it in my Walkman on the school-bus and IMMEDIATELY became infatuated. My best friends mother had the self titled album, so we swapped cds from time to time and became the biggest maggots on planet earth. This was before they had revealed their identity so, so the shock value was there..and it was all just a perfect recipe for a fat, lonely pre teen to fall in love with. Those first two albums were literally gold to me. So when vol3 came out, with the actually a,b,c songwriting and clean lyrics and production. I HATED IT. And bc of this I never really grew to like it. I like it more so now than I did, But I def agree with ur 2.5. Excellent video. 👍

Honestly for me no Slipknot album is anything less thana 3.5/5 (except for MFKR). I just love how different they all sound. "Slipknot" is just an all time classic. "IOWA" is heavy as shit "Volume 3" has some really dope shit that makes the crowd go ham "All Hope Is Gone" has some of the best headbanger riffs ever. And it is just fun to play (Guitar, drums, bass etc.) ".5" has it's strengths.. I am personally just not a fan of Jay's drumming. But "Devil In I" "Custer" "The Negative One" really get you going. "We Are Not You Kind" it is good.. it is heavy.. it is Slipknot.. somehow I just don't find myself going back to it. Maybe I have to give it 5 more listens in a row. If I had to rank them it would probably be like: 6. ".5 The Gray Chapter" 5. "Volume 3" 4. "We Are Not Your Kind" 3. "All Hope Is Gone" 2. "Iowa" 1. "Slipknot"

There are alot of great songs on All Hope Is Gone. I don't understand your hate for snuff. The lyrics are fantastic. Gotta heavily disagree with you on that.

Custer was alright but i dont think its as good as anything of self titled. It seems like an attempt to recapture some of older slipknot vibes. Feels kinda forced and also like a shallow caricature of the first album. Honestly, the only stand out track i can think of is sarchastrophe. The opening clean riff the main riff, and the chorus made it feel worth learning how to play

I love stuff from every one of their albums. Slipknot for me, and I'm sure most other people, was one of my gateways into extreme music, along with Slayer, and they'll always mean a lot to me. I'm not gonna lie I see The Gray Chapter very differently to you. Maybe it's because that came out at a very important time in my life and ended up being the defining album from that year for me, but when I put it on now it still hits me fuckin hard! For me I find it to be way more of a consistent album than say All Hope Is Gone, and it's not just a nostalgia trip for me whenever I listen to it. I also find I've got to be in the mood for WANYK, and I do think the song Spiders sucks ass. As cool and experimental and avant-garde as it's trying to be, it just doesn't grab me and I always find myself skipping ahead. Love pretty much all of the rest of the album when I'm in the mood for it, even if the interludes can be a bit annoying. I'm also a fan of the singles on All Hope is Gone, I actually love Psychosocial and Dead Memories and Sulfur, even Snuff hits me in the feels (Ok maybe for nostalgia but whatever), but the track that stands out for me is Gematria. Holy fucking shit that starts the album off with a bang and a half! To be honest, I think the song's actually too good for the album and the rest of the songs just bring it down! For me nothing will ever ever top Iowa. That to me defines absolutely everything that Slipknot is and is the only record of theirs I consider to be perfect. I can put it on and still be just as blown away as I was when I first heard it. I think the only thing I truly disagree with you on would be Vol. 3, I think that album fucking rules. I dug the CD out and jammed it when I heard of Joey's passing and I fucking loved it. Apart from the shit produciton, which is expected cause I think Rick Rubin fucking sucks as a producer. The CD is still in my car and probably won't leave for a while! The loss of Joey hit me so fucking hard, I'm still struggling to accept that he's gone. Being a drummer myself I discovered them at the age of around 13 and apart from the sheer chaos of the music, what drew me in was his drumming. To me it was the most insane shit I'd ever heard. I remember being a teen and studying everything he was doing, and attempting it myself. While I feel like I can do a pretty good job on it, I will never match just how chaotic and relentless his playing was. He was something else. His playing and his style has wove its way into my own playing, and I don't think it'll ever disappear, it's become an integral part of my own style. I think his passing was the first time I have genuinely cried at a famous death, he meant a lot to me as a kid and to not have him here anymore is truly heartbreaking to me. One of my biggest regrets was that I never got the chance to see him in person. I wanted to see Sinsaenum when they eventually came back, but unfortunately that's now impossible 😔 Great video as always man 🤘
