Interesting bit of history about the railway embankments used as allotments. Yes it would be a great idea to have them planted again. Here in America they do not like anyone to be on the embankments. However, nature helps herself to that ground! thanks again for so many ideas and updates - always interesting and useful.

Thanks, sometime garden design is overwhelming and then I give up. My side garden is getting French doors out onto it, so now is the time to plan once more and your tips are really helpful. House windows and glass doors need pretty garden views to bring that outdoor area indoors.

Hi Alexandra, do you have any advice for a NE facing tiny courtyard terrace garden in England? I want to make it seem bigger, lighter and brighter!
@TheMiddlesizedGarden
@TheMiddlesizedGarden 10 ай бұрын
Sorry, it's taken me a while to answer this. The best thing to do with a very small space is to have a big idea or theme - obviously planting appropriate plants for shade and partial shade will be important here. I think a strong idea will make it feel bigger, I'm not sure about brighter. People used to paint walls and boundaries white, but that rather defines them so you're very aware of the boundaries. The thinking is now that if you fill a space with plants or paint the walls darker, then the eye can't quite work out the boundaries so has to 'work harder' and thinks it's bigger. This video may help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/paTKo2x-l86Kaqs I hope that helps.

I enjoy this channel. Gives me ideas for my middle sized garden. I disagree about gardens needing sculpture. Whenever I see a sculpture in a park, even a sculpture I like, I think I'd rather see a tree or smaller plant there. My one critique of your garden is the swirl box hedge in the middle of your lavender square. Like a sculpture it does not change. I would rather see a specimen plant there like a citrus tree or tropical palm that you store in winter. At least lilacs or a weeping willow. Hope I'm not out of bounds.
@TheMiddlesizedGarden
@TheMiddlesizedGarden 4 жыл бұрын
It's always interesting to hear other views. And maybe instead of 'gardens needing sculpture' I should have said sculpture can add to gardens, because everyone's taste is different, and probably 'need' isn't the right word. A tree in that pot is a fascinating thought - it could be good. With all the gaps I have elsewhere in the garden, I will probably prioritise those unless the topiary box dies - there is a real issue with box blight and box tree moth at the moment, so that could easily happen.

@@TheMiddlesizedGarden I wrote a reply, but I don't see it here. Just to say that you are right that it is a matter of taste. I look forward to more of your videos.

You always teach me something I need to know. The blight and moth are a worry. I hope you find a way to protect your plants. I have many box and my middle sized garden is in france. The only hedge type plant I like as much is Mexican Orange,. They probably don't care for the shaded areas that box tolerate. Stop by if you two are in France. An hour south of Paris. cheers

White clover is such a beautiful, cheap and healthy alternative to grass. It’s high in nitrogen, so needs no fertilizer; does a great job keeping weeds in check, so needs no herbicides; is attractive to bees and other pollinators and doesn’t have grub problems, so no need for pesticides, holds a lot of water, so not drying out so quickly in the heat of summer and greens up very quickly when it does rain…. and, when cut with a bagged mower can be used as a mulch for any food or ornamental garden, naturally applying all that natural nitrogen. It makes a lovely carpeted green space without the financial burden of expensive additives or unhealthy spraying of poisons.

When I plant a bed I use a similar method as I do when I make flower arrangements. I gather the flowers that are available then I arrange them at about equal distance around the vase. Starting with the largest flowers, keeping them in the middle area, then around that, add the next tallest flowers plus a few in between the large ones in the middle. Continue working your way around filling the vase with the remaining shorter or smaller flowers and remembering to add a few small flowers throughout the middle and high areas where there are gaps between the flowers. I sometimes add a bit of foliage at this time too. When I plant a bed I use this same method, only the flowers in the bouquet are replaced with shrubs, perennials and annuals. I just treat each plant as I would each flower when arranging a bouquet When I buy plants for a bed i like to think about color. In my instance bloom color comes second to foliage color when planning a bed. I am a gardener at a public facility and when I choose plants I usually go with what the foliage looks like over what the blooms look like. I try to arrange the plants that are next to each other to have drastic foliage, color and texture changes. Sometimes all three cannot be achieved with plants side by side. It is fairly simple to choose plants side by side with dramatic color differences in the leaves to achieve this goal. It makes it more challenging and fun to choose plants side by side that have all three traits, like dramatic color, texture and foliage differences.

Tip 1, l live in London and I'm transforming my garden with antique York flagstones and large vintage Terracotta pots and free plants all salvage from skips as my area is becoming more ethnically diverse and they have no interest in old-time gardening or cherishing the original features of period properties preferring new white plastic front doors over oak etc. Sad but true.
