There weren't enough songs that featured two or more vocalists per song. It's unbelievably unique in rock to have four great songwriters all be four great lead singers, and I will argue all day that Peter's voice is as iconic as any other aspect of KISS's sound.

I do admit that I never thought much of them as a band. They always sound like very sloppy second-rate musicians to me. But THIS... surprised me. They are locked together tight as a nut, and everything is spot on including the harmonies. People gripe about the relatively simplistic guitar solos, but honestly, I think they are just what the song needs and sounded great. It's really good, hard-driving rock n roll that ALSO doesn't run away or blow it musically.

@@cowsongsAce always added something special to Kiss. Great feel for the songs. Black Diamond is a great rock anthem and this is probably one of the best versions, despite Gene hitting a bum note at the end (he usually hits wrong notes through various songs).

never been a major Kiss fan, but you can't deny their power on this night. They brought their A game to the party and nailed it. Every band has a secret weapon in it- Kiss had Peter. His gritty vocal style was perfect for this song. And what to say about Ace? such charisma. His power added huge legitimacy to the band. Also fun to see their obvious nods to the Who- Paul's windmills, (which be borrowed from Pete Townshend, who in turn took it from Keith Richards), and the end, where Peter destroys his kit much like Keith Moon did on the (in)famous Smothers Brothers performance in 1967. a truly monster performance.

It's really sad Gene & Paul put such a choke on Peter & Ace's vocals in a Kiss shows later on. Peter & Ace could both hold their own but sadly were all too often only used a few times in a live show or even less on a record.

The next day at a buddy's house he had the just released Alive album which was exactly what I had experienced the night before at the concert. I was never the same again.

Mr@thirdeyelabs, That is exactly what you did. The first five albums from"Kiss" to "Destroyer" were the vintage years! After that, they became more of a cartoon than a rock band. On the first several albums the music was next level. Sounds like Black Diamond, 100,000 Years, Watchin' You, She, Parasite, Strange Ways, couldn't get any better! Tight arrangements, all members contributing on vocals, raw edgy sound. And nothing but black and silver on the costumes! They were dark, they were almost sinister, they were the band that your parents loved to hate! Then by the time '77-'78 came around, came around they were still very popular and even voted most popular band in the world by Gallup poll. Most of the early fan base was starting to become disillusioned and a large majority of their fan base was becoming made up of preteens. These old clips from Midnight Special are Kiss at the top of their game. During this era they also had some good performances on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, and ABC'S In Concert. In their prime, you couldn't beat 'em!

I saw Kiss in 1976 at the Birmingham Civic Center and it was the best show ever. They were in their prime and kicked hard! The audience was on its feet and screaming from the moment Kiss came onstage and never stopped. There were stoners, leather boys, families, birthday parties, preppies and college kids, and fans of all ages young to old. I’ve seen some awesome bands perform, and while Kiss wasn’t my favorite band this was hands down and Bic lighters in the air, the greatest concert I’ve ever seen. The band and the crowd had a symbiotic love wherein the louder we roared the better they played. It was lightning in a bottle!
