Nice video, I have had a lot of them. I have had a failing (melting) wiring loom for the navi computer in the rear on two early cars. I also had a failing heater resistance, draining the battery on a TD6. With that car, during over 300k km, I have changed injectors and air bulges, not much more. My last was a 4.4 tdv8, sold with around 500k km. Great cars.

Love my 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue. Yes it has it's foibles, not least gremlins in the electronics, but it's a genuine off-road vehicle that's as comfortable in the fells as on the road and is fantastic value for the £10,400 I paid. Just budget for regular maintenance spend. So far I've spent £1800 in 16 months including new rear discs and calipers (it's a heavy car).

No start scenario I've experienced 3 TDV8 3.6 ( I'm on my 6th FF L322 🙈) suffer NO start scenario with just a clonking sound from the starter motor .......... will probably be quickly be resolved by adding a second negative lead from battery negative terminal to the spare earthing terminal on nearside front strut top mount..... I've had 3 TDV8 s with this same scenario, learnt the hard way after changing loads of new parts. ( new battery,new ignition barrel ,new starter motor,new maxi fused positive starter motor feed ,new fuse box etc.etc.) It's a earth lead corrosion/ impedance fault. Great cars when behaving themselves but nightmare to change turbos ,vanos, timing chains etc etc... For this reason I prefer a properly sorted P38 as my daily workhorse,lot,lot easier to work on 🤠

Great video. I have a 2003 L322 with only 120k miles that I purchased brand new 12/2022. It’s been an amazing car with minimal repairs…but the head gasket is now starting to fail. (Exhaust is getting into the coolant system). The cost to repair/replace the gasket is being quoted between $15k-$20k!!! Apparently these head gaskets are a known issue so now I need to decide to repair the gasket or replace the entire engine. Ugh 😩
@themilesdriven Жыл бұрын
@JJ Jackson Great to hear you've had 20 years of great motoring. The quote for repair of head gaskets had us fall off our chair. The parts for the job should cost less than $1,000 if it just needs a head gasket replacement, or are they quoting a full engine rebuild? Either way it may be best getting another quote 👍
@GrandCanyonRVResort Жыл бұрын
@@doublewhopper67I agree…the independent repair shop quotes have been insane and the dealership won’t even touch the job. They just recommend a new engine. I don’t get it and it’s been a very frustrating experience. The car is still drivable but on occasion, the coolant expansion tank will burst open with boiling coolant because exhaust is seeping into the coolant system due to the bad head gasket. Especially during the hot summer season. There is no smoke coming out of the tailpipe yet which indicates which portion of the head gasket is breaking down.

Thanks for the great videos. I'm a proud new owner of a L322 3.6 TdV8 2007 with 115k miles on the clock, and love it, though while going through the list of jobs i can do myself to improve MPG, since replacing the air intake filter from a Mann to a Pipercross (which have great reviews), the fuel consumption has gone from a dismal 16 mpg (driving efficiently) down to 11.9 mpg, i was expecting the opposite effect tbh. I feel its drinking far too much while idling. I would appreciate a pointer and the service video you mentioned in the 50mpg try video :) Thanks. Support will follow as requested.
@themilesdriven Жыл бұрын
Agreed that it seems to be using more fuel than would be expected. We would just quickly mention that although the pipercross filter may have better reviews if it is less restrictive then you have increased air to combustion chamber which will be matched by more fuel to keep the standard ratio of fuel to air, but this should be marginal. It may be worth getting an OE paper filter and doing some A/B testing. Three things we will note. Have you checked the vehicle has all the standard emissions equipment? If the catalytic converters have been gutted or removed but not remapped out of the ECU the motor could run be running in the start up fuel/air ratio all the time. It is also common to hear of EGR's getting blanked or removed on the 3.6 TDV8. Has the engine oil/transmission oil/differential oil been changed recently? Alone these three shouldn't make a huge differences but old oil may be adding additional friction across the drivetrain, forcing the engine to work harder, Any sign of a seized caliper? with how torque heavy the TDV8 is, it may not be as noticeable. Let us know how you get on 👍

My engine is in great condition but lately my transmition is showing trans fail prog on dash board. My obd scanner cannot find faults. Can't have Range Rover footage without a bit of Clarkson 😁 as far as we understand none of the Jaguar engines (4.4 V8 and 4.2 Supercharged) are well suited to LPG. However if there are owners that know different it would be great to get their feedback. Anecdotally researching for this video we found several L320 Sport and L322 Range Rovers in good condition selling exceptionally cheap because they were in need of a motor and all bar one were LPG converted. The repair manual for MY 2010 is unclear as to when (if at all) the 4 pot brembo brakes are resupplied to 3.6 TDV8 The repair manual for the 3.6 TDV8 of 2007 /2008 / and none DRL 2009 states Brembo We are unaware of the 6 pot Brembos (as became the supply of the L322 in MY2011) being fitted to the 3.6 TDV8 so production months and specifying whether the 4 pot Brembo or 6 pot Brembo was fitted would be really helpful We are aware that some L322 MY2010 3.6 TDV8 owners retrofitted 4 pot Brembos from MY2007 / MY 2008 / MY2009 vehicles but we can't see any reference to JLR doing this at factory. 👍

Thanks for the detailed insights, very helpful. Quick qtn for you: When deciding between the 3.6 TDV8 and the 4.4 TDV8 (assuming both have similar trim) which one has the better / more robust gearbox and why?
@themilesdriven2 жыл бұрын
Hi, and thanks for the comment. The 4.4TDV8 gets the 8-speed automatic ZF unit which increases fuel efficiency and the 3.6 TDV8 gets a 6-speed. Both gearboxes are considered reliable with a low failure rate although we would recommend a flush or oil change change upon purchase unless supplied with proof of it being done recently. The gearbox of most concern in the L322 is the GM unit fitted to 2.9td6 motor (01-06) but since you didn't mention this one we assume you aren't considering it, Well kept L322s are out there on both the V8 diesels with over 200,000 miles and still on the original gearbox (usually these have had a least one transmission fluid change in their lifetime). If faster response is important then the 4.4TDV8 is better, but if the budget gets a nicer lower mileage 3.6TDV8 then this is just as attractive. Note that the 3.6TDV8 of the 2009 facelift model does not get the Brembo brakes of the 4.4TDV8. It may be worth watching our segment about the engines again just to see what maintenance/common failures you feel more comfortable with as these two suffer different common issues. Good luck with the search! 😁

@@themilesdriven Thanks a lot, that's very insightful, exactly what I needed. Not sure what they mean it was designed by bmw as the engineers at JLR are bound to have had major input even though the company was owned by bmw.
@themilesdriven Жыл бұрын
JLR as a group didn't officially exist at the time of the L322 creation, Land Rover was owned by BMW and Jaguar by Ford. The two would be under one roof again in the Ford era but while owned by different parents a line was drawn between them.BMW wanted the Rover brand to develop an SUV (or SAV as they named it) of their own. Yes the Land Rover engineers were certainly involved, BMW materials science, engineering, and designers were utilised though. The E53 BMW X5 design and L322 design were closely connected. The L322 monocoque, engines, and features highlight this. Some of the suspensions and frame components were also shared with modification to give each car a distinct identity. This is one of the reason why if you get in a 2001-2005 model you'll notice the seats are firmer than 2006 onwards, BMW generally aim for a firmer more 'sporty' seat design, whereas Range Rover designers wanted a slightly softer and comfortable seat and so once they had more control of the L322 they made changes for the 2005/2006 facelift. This also rings true for the second facelift in 2009/2010 when JLR was reestablished and the company pushed the L322 further into the luxury car competition, a theme that is fully delivered with the L405 and the benchmarking of a Rolls Royce Ghost (see our L405 buyers guide) Hope this helps clear things up, take nothing away from Land Rover and their team, they certainly would have brought their expertise to the project 👍

Great up load however I have either the luck of the gods or I just buy my cars well I have owned one of these now for over 5 years 02 model the only issue being the ignition key "will not start the car " So I simply by passed all the flash stuff and put in a seperate switch toggle switch problem solved !! No air bag issues No other electrical issues just a bloody great car at a fantastic price So So comfy to drive why on this earth would you not want one ?? Ok fuel consumption is not the best but if thats all you care about go and get an Electric car for thousands and thousands more pounds drive it for a few years and see what its worth with half used batteries I paid 6K for this car and I honestly think I will get around the 4K mark if i sell 2K loss not so bad Factor that into the other costs and the fuel issue is not an issue trust me Mine is a diesel !! To all the purists that are going to take me down re electric just look at what damage is made to get the electric cars up and running then and only then make a comment because the electric thing is a load off bolocks and if you dont get it you are as thick as a heavy custard and are a sheep following all the other sheep whilst the wolf is ripping you off good style !!!!! Rant over but at least have a fucking think !!

Thanks for the comment and glad your one is still going well. As we joked in our L320 Range Rover Sport buyer's guide, many people think Range Rovers are bad news because of what someone told them, but owners tell us they love their car, especially the L322

What would you say about lpg in an 2011 supercharged model?
@themilesdrivenАй бұрын
Although the valves aren’t as soft as the 4.2 and 4.4, I’d probably still avoid LPG on the 5.0-litre. Unless you are planning to do very high mileage 👍

I L322 of 2004 with 3000cc but pissed of with Trans.failsafe prog. And it does not accelerate above 70m/h even if i lifted speed limit to 150m/h. Does this because of the error or something else?
@themilesdriven Жыл бұрын
If your transmission is in failsafe mode it is either protecting itself from mechanical failure (limiting speed) or the stored code for a fault that is not rectified will be telling the engine management to limit performance 👍

What is the model called in Canada as I believe that it isn't called the L322 in Canada?
@themilesdriven Жыл бұрын
The L322 designation is world wide, but some call it the MK3, others call it the Range Rover Vogue. It was developed under the code L30 so maybe you have heard this term? The Vogue is just a specification of the L322 but because you couldn't buy a Range Rover Sport in Vogue specification some people use the term to separate the two models. 👍

You missed the first 2005 face-lift one😅
@themilesdriven Жыл бұрын
We mention the 2005-2009 facelift at 1:06. Or do you mean we didn’t mention the 2005 (exterior) facelift that kept the earlier interior until 2006 on the Td6, JLR 4.4, and early Supercharged models? If so we mention this at 11:08 when giving our recommendations 👍
@The13thDukeofWybourne Жыл бұрын
@@themilesdriven you didn't show the 2005 exterior face-lift. You jumped to the 2009 chrome grill.😁
@themilesdriven Жыл бұрын
At 1:06 we show the 2005 facelift model with the supercharged grille, the same grille was fitted to my 2007 Vogue SE TDV8 as standard from factory to differentiate Vogue and Vogue SE specification. To double check this you can look at the videos we did in mine. In 2009 the second facelift is first offered as 5.0-litre or remains with the 3.6 TDV8 for one year, then the 4.4TDV8, but this is the second facelift not the 2005 to 2009 facelift. This might be a region specific change? I'm not aware of a 'chrome' grille ever being a standard fit facelift item, but happy to be proven wrong, do you have a source for this information we can check? We'll be updating this video with a newer one soon so it would be great to clarify this 👍
@The13thDukeofWybourne Жыл бұрын
@themilesdriven The supercharged grille was not standard from factory on the 2007 TDV8. Vogue or SE. If you look at Clarksons, which is a 2007 TDV8 SE you will see it's the grey grille.
@themilesdriven Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the replies but a quick search online will clear this up. The Vogue SE is a trim that adds all of the supercharged model equipment but with the TDV8 engine (except the electronic rear differential which remained optional). That was the reason for its introduction in markets like the UK where the supercharged model were not as popular, but buyers wanted the top specification. 😁 Yes Clarkson changed the front grille to the Vogue specification as he didn't like the supercharged style mesh style. He has said this a few times 👍 If you go to any dedicated L322 forum (FullfatRR Is a good one) and ask if the L322 Vogue SE from 2005-2009 has the diamond pattern supercharged grilles you will have your answer. Here is a link to a someone asking on the LandyZone forum. www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/whats-the-difference-l322-vogue-or-vogue-se.158015/ Hope all this information has cleared it up for you. If not you can also get hold of the 2005-2008 UK brochure from Land Rover for the L322. This specifies the diamond pattern (supercharged) grille as standard equipment on the Vogue SE. Note: Vogue SE trim was not offered in all markets. The USA for example did not get Vogue SE as an option. As a side note it also added the diamond pattern mesh side side grille in the front wings as standard equipment on the Vogue SE TDV8 (again these were on my own TDV8) 👍

im in the market and fairly confused between all the trims and engine variants. Im a bimmer head and know quite a bit about engines. I know the word 'reliability' is tough with high hp engines but whats an engine that didn't have a history of catastrophic failures? the most 'bullet proof" engine for the US market. Anything helps - cheers, Jake
@themilesdriven Жыл бұрын
Hi Jake, the JLR 4.4 from 06-09 or the 4.2 supercharged 05-09 are probably best for you. The JLR 4.4 is considered particularly robust. Note that that the 4.4 from 02-05 is a BMW engine and less reliable but if you know BMW's you could work on it yourself? The early 02-05 has more of a BMW 'feel'. The seats are firmer and the motor is same as the 745i ect that had the 4.4 V8 👍

I literally had to buy a spare Range Rover as a parts car as these vehicles do not age well. So far I replace a radiator, tranny, head gasket, fuel pump, air suspension, tpms module, suspension controll module, 2 sets of deteriorate keys, fuel pump sender and filter unit, full suspension, and now my head gasket just blew at 100k miles, oh and an alternator, battery and windshield wiper relay and all the plastics, cowels A pillars and interior broken crap . Range Rovers are getting worse even more so that they are owned by the Chinese company Chery Motors in conjunction with the India company Tata motors owning a 50% stake. Maybe the Chinese made parts will actually be better quality then the British made parts ....so maybe China owning JLR group will help out!

People that spent $80k-$100k back in 2003 for an L322 weren’t very concerned with fuel efficiency. They were most interested in the performance and capability of this car. Kinda like Porsche owners. It’s just a big luxury toy.
