Pakistan is Iran's neighbor, so to get training, spare parts and periodical maintenance of J-17 will be easy for Iran. Purchase of J-17 from Pak is the best decision of Iran. Besides, Pak will not ask Iran to pay in USD. Instead, in lieu of Jets, Iran might supply oil and gas to Pak at good price. So it is a win-win situation for both countries. J17 is relatively cheap, multirole and can carry a variety of advance weapons

Su 35 is intended maybe to replace F 14 Tomcat and F 4 Phantom and the lighter JF 17 can replace F 5 tiger 2 and the Chinese variant of Mig 21 J 7 if is still in service ..but in the near future an 5 th gen fighter will be needed

What you didn't mention in your video is that JF-17 is much stronger in Precision Guided Strike Missions & can very well replace Iranian F-5's, F-7's(Chinese Mig21's) & even Mig-29's, since those Mig-29's are old & doesn't contain Modern War fighting Capabilities. There's another important thing to mention Su-34 Fullback is what's used for Strike Missions by Russians. For any non Russian Airforce, operating a JF-17 makes more sense than Su-34 Fullback because of Much lowrr Cost, not only purchasing cost, but operating, maintenance as well as logistics + munitions costs. Not saying Su-34 is bad, but it's too large in size & is best suited for Russian Geography to carry more fuel & to travel longer distances. Su-35 Super Flanker is entirely another thing. It's an Air Superiority Fighter & configured for Air Superiority which means it predominantly carries Air to Air Weapons & isn't a suitable Strike Platform. Not saying it can't deliver Air to Ground Munitions, but is too costly. That's why sensible Airforces always maintain a Mix of Hi-Low. What's great about JF-17 Block 3, is that it's Air to Air Capabilities are much stronger than its predecessor Block 2's, ensuring Air Superiority at certain level, where maybe Su-35 isn't needed. Beyond that level Su-35 can be sent to perform highend Air Superiority Missions. Lack of AESA Radar however, is the biggest Weakness of Su-35.

Jf-17 are a cheap gap fillers covered other roles while SU35 will serve as a tip of the Iranian air force. JF-17 are cheaper to acquire and maintain and fulfill secondary roles.

Iran has every interest in gaining volume with the purchase of a large number of advanced JF-17 Block3s (between 60 and 100 aircraft) at a competitive price to replace a large number of its very old aircraft and to supplement them with the SU-35 for its best units which are very superior but whose price is less affordable and whose number will be around 40-50 units for the IRIAF. A good balance between a heavy fighter and a light fighter. The same architecture as for the F-16 and the F-15 iu the F-22 and the F-35 of the US Air Force.

The upgrade from the PESA on the Su-35 to the JF-17B3's AESA alone is worth it. The upgrade from PESA to AESA is the core difference between a 4th and 4.5 gen aircraft. Yes, the Su-35 is faster, more agile, and can carrier more ordinance, but in a BVR fight, the JF-17B3 has the advantage, will almost certainly look first and shoot first.

The Iranian SU-35 also has an AESA main Radar. But all SU-35s have both. In the traditional SU-35, the main nose Radar is passive, but the wings have the AESA Radar. However, the SU-35E or SE, can't remember, has an AESA Radar in the nose. Also an airforce shouldn't rely on only one type of fighter, and JF-17 is good enough and cheap enough to have in large numbers.

The dual approach has proven successful in cost reduction in the past for the United States (older examples: F-15, F-16, originally both shared they same engine and other parts) and the Russian Federation's (Older examples: SU-27 and MIG-29 Up to a point both shared some parts). Cost savings won't be the case for Iran this time though. There are other reasons the J-17 is a good match for Iran. 1. Iran can't get such aircraft from the West. 2. Iran may be taking a page from India. They purchase from many sources, thus reducing chances of being affected by sanctions. 3. The J-17 has an open architecture that Iran's software techs can add to. This means Iran may be able to add software weaponry with the J-17. Along with the American made weapons bought from black market of Ukraine. Iran could reverse engineer cruder versions of them. Just ask Israel who lost tanks because of the Ukraine's black market sales of American antitank missiles. The same with Russia's handing over such weapons to China and Iran.

They need " Bread n Butter " 4.5 gen multi role combat jet fighter... Still reasonably affordable for maintenance and payload plus constant supply of spares from Pakistan...Due to its price, they can employ as many units as they can afford. For Defense and Attack , this is a good reliable aircraft considering what the Paklistani air force has been employing

Another thing to consider is the supply time. Russia is still at war. Its weapon manufacturing industry is busy supplying the frontline needs. It can only supply the SU35s few years after the war in Ukraine ends. Take sometime to re-stock its weapons to sufficient state in case another conflict fares up, like war with NATO.

Pakistan will not get the American green light to sell a single J17 to Iran. They are a cheaper and more easily maintainable choice but the big brother has an eye on what Pakistan does. Not even china can freely do that business with just Iran. The SU 35 deal is not known in details either. It’s not only the plane that matters but a lot of agreements around the maintenance too. There are better options than the Pakistani J17 for iran but iran is interested in something else: manufacturing technology from Pakistan. That’s what iran is after. cheap does not mean better.....or worse.......but the JF-17 B3 is more suited to local defense needs.....where the Russian SU-35 is a better option for attacking or defending targets from longer ranges, with better accuracy.....so they both have their roles to play....but for me the SU-35 is a better choice.
