It changed the industry. It’s why I started watching wrestling. I kept hearing my friends and classmates talking about Hulk Hogan being a bad guy and leading this group called the New World Order. I had to check it out. Hulk Hogan was such a huge star that even a kid like me knew who he was even though I had never watched wrestling in my life at that point. Hearing Hulk Hogan was a bad guy was shocking even to me.

The dude shouting “No!” as Seth pulls back the chair to swing it is perfect. It’s dead quiet, the crowd sees what’s happening and are too stunned to react except for that guy. Beautiful. And then Dean sees Roman collapse and looks to see Seth holding the chair and he cannot compute what’s going on before Seth attacks him, too. Just great. And as much as I hated at the time, it was the perfect moment to do it because they just had a clean sweep beating Evolution the night before. You know Triple H isn’t going to let that go. Might as well be the first one to sell out. And I assume that Hogan dropping the leg on Macho and joining the Outsiders to form the NWO isn’t on this list because maybe WCW didn’t air in England then? Because that’s probably the greatest of all time in terms of shock and the impact it had on the wrestling business.

Great list! Been a wrestling fan for over 30 years and probably the 2 most "didn't see that coming" heel turns were Hogan joining NWO. Such a hard pill to swallow at the time and seeing the fans throw trash in the ring (as disrespectful as that was btw) I guess they too had a hard time with it. Lol. If they ever do this with Cody which I think fans do want to see, they'll need to make it as impactful as the Hogan turn since Cody is arguably one of the biggest babyfaces ever so if they do end up doing this theyd better NOT screw it up! Next, Roman turning heel after his long babyface run wasn't in itself super shocking. But the camera paning towards Paul Heyman left me pretty shocked! Did NOT see that coming at all! Fans always wanted Roman as a heel, but pairing him with Paul was definitely the duo we didn't know we needed.

Seth Rollins is the only heel turn that ever "got me" I was 10 years old when I discovered wrestling, I knew it was a work, every heel turn I ever saw either excited me or pissed me off in the wrong way, i.e. excited for KO turning on Sami, pissed off about lame writing when Matt turned on Jeff, etc. Seth Rollins worked me, I dropped my phone while my dad lost his mind cause he knew the Shield were my boys and I sat there just shocked still. To this day if me and my brother are in a team game with randos who are being jerks I can say "there's all ways a plan b" and we will go on a team kill spree, one guy even got the reference and had time to beg for his life.

Ahem - a hairdresser who worked with garden shears instead of, you know, scissors. He gets hate for hitching a ride to Hogan's star but...don't wrestlers do that all the time? The Usos or Solo and Our Tribal Chief, countless wrestlers as the nWo, hell even Randy in Evolution. Brutus had a decent career and got a very silly gimmick over on its own bizarre merits - as a kid, I didn't really think of.him as Hogan's stooge. He didn't have a Hall of Fame career but, guess what?, wrestling is nurtured, loved, appreciated, promoted and kept going by people who aren't in, maybe won't ever be in, the HoF - or who are moderately over guys with good physiques who have a Zelig like ability to show up at the right time and regardless of abilities make it into the HoF anyway.

HBK turning on Marty was the biggest one for me. The Rockers were so popular. You felt like they were on the brink of becoming tag team champions. When he super kicked him, it was heart-breaking. I watched this one as a kid when kay-fabe was very much alive. Andre turning on Hogan is another one for this list.

Let me just say this. To think about the years of people saying Cena turn heel he needs it.. despite that despite Cena sucks chants people has always loved and respected him. The fact his last couple of short runs even the old who yelled Cena sucks now pops massively for the guy. He did what Neither Rock,Austin,Hogan,Roman nobody else could do. Stay Face from the day his massive baby face push started.

I consider myself to be someone who doesn’t show a lot of emotion so it takes a lot to get a pop out of me from wrestling. But, the Jey Uso double-cross and super kick to Sami was a great turn. Even if it was kind of obvious, the timing, Sami’s selling and the crowd reaction was incredible.
