On sentimental items: My maternal grandparents helped raise us. Grandmother was from KY and they moved to AZ after WWII. She always said she missed the Dogwood trees in spring. She also loved yellow roses and I gave them to her for her birthdays for many years. When she died I kept one rocking chair and her nativity set. When we moved to from AZ to NC I planted 5 Dogwood trees and 2 yellow climbing rose bushes as a memorial to her.

Hi, yes, Phyllis is correct. It was going through each room but without the expectation of being perfect the first time. I took a black bag for trash and a black bag for donations and hit up my bathroom one day. Filled both bags. Then did my kitchen- again filled both bags. I picked a room a day and in six days had gotten out 12 bags of “stuff”. Being that we live in 1200sq. ft. It made a difference. Then I just kept going. Take 20 min and do it with your kitchen utensils- take out the duplicates, keep your favorites and the drawers feel amazing! Happy decluttering!

I had a mug given to me for participating in a particular group last year. I was annoyed to have to drive to pick it up, then got there to find out it’s a mug. I was also in the middle of decluttering my kitchen. That mug went straight in the Donate box as soon as I got home. The thought was nice, but I wish they’d have used the money to donate towards the cause than add to peoples clutter.

I have two things that I tell myself when I hear that little voice in my head trying to talk me into keeping the kinds of things in this video: 1. This stuff already belongs to other people. I've just been storing it for them all these years for free. It's time now for them to collect their things. (This goes for pretty much any item.) 2. I didn't know it at the time, but I actually bought this (whatever) for someone else. I don't know who, but it's my gift to them. (This is for those things I've purchased but didn't use or wear.) These two things help me spin the guilt into a positive. I put the item(s) in the donation box, knowing that the rightful owner will soon find it and perhaps pay a nominal fee to retrieve their belongings. As for sentimental items, I am still working on that. I can say 'letting go of the item is not letting go of the person.' I'm okay with that. But other people in the family may not be. I can ask them if they want the items, but if they don't, do I have to ask their permission to let it go?

Sue Wolfe- I want to pass on "family" items from my great grandmother to my adult children, but they may not want them. I have to honor my mother who's family this is by picking items that remind me of her. She painted, so those items I will keep. The other things, if they don't want them, I'll let them go. I didn't know any of these family members but I can certainly honor my Mother by treasuring her artwork! Thank you for helping me see how to navigate this tough and emotional journey! ❤

I’m in a tough spot right now. After downsizing from a 3bedroom house full of junk to two bedrooms in my in laws (to save up to buy land) - we suffered (and by the grace of God all survived!!) a horrible house fire two weeks ago. Everything that wasn’t on us or in our cars is completely gone. Truthfully part of me thought of this as a way to to even more minimal - but now we’ve been blessed with so many donations. Today I did catch up on a lot of your videos while sorting through all of the kids clothes and toys and making bags to take away to donations. At first I was holding onto these bags of THINGS as a security blanket. But I’ve had to remind myself of what you said People over Things!!

Hi Ruth! After my granny passed, I kept a lot of her things, but now (6 years later) I am realizing that some things mean more to me than others. I am challenging myself to keep 10 items or less. I love using her soup ladle to feed my family as she did for so many years and the music box from her upstairs bedroom that I liked to wind up and listen to as a kid. I am trying to name my favorites and put the rest in a box in the basement to let go of ( without peeking) in a year or so if I don’t specifically miss anything.

I used to feel guilty wanting to part with certain more ordinary things my grandma would pass off to me (she is still 85 years young 😉) but over time I've come to notice how often she says very practically, "Oh, pff! Get rid of it then," even about her own stuff! So in addition to finding only very special things to keep that I ever inherit from family or friends, I also try to think, "Would she even have to think about keeping this?" Often the answer is no, which really helps ☺

I like using the Dave Ramsey "stupid tax" for my 'sunken cost value' items. It's much easier to donate unused items. As for clothes, I've been purchasing from 'thred up' it's much easier to donate those items as well. You've helped me so much to lower my inventory! I don't really need much, I can ALWAYS acquire it from somewhere. My kitchen top shelf in the cabinets are completely empty! Nothing on the fridge! I need a step stool to reach either, but don't need to anymore! You've really helped my brain to purge items and simplify my life! Thank you so so much, Dawn!💞💞💞

You have become like a dear friend that checks in each week to remind us that we are normal humans that need support in seeing the world and understanding what is important. During my 3-year journey to simplifying my home, I have seen that letting go of things that were taking away the time of my family has helped me to breathe better. I was not the best person to be around since there were too many things around that need to time to manage and this stressed me out. I will say that little by little I have let go of things and have not looked back on missing them. I remind myself that I want to be a happy person and have less to manage so I can have more room for my family. I have more energy and my parents have asked to help to declutter their home. My dad has been calmer since he feels that he can walk around the house better. I can see how letting goes is a mental thing. We need to teach ourselves that things don't really say a lot about us compare to being with the people we love. I want to be remembered more than just being a little in their closet. I hope this helps someone out there.

Excellent video with good recommendations. Sometimes when decluttering, I realize I have to distance myself from the 'story' I have about the item. So to get that distance, I imagine how someone, a stranger or friend for example, would view the item. I imagine what they would say - "Why are you keeping this ratty old thing?" I try to look at the item with fresh eyes. In fact, Its easier for me to declutter my husband's stuff than it is my own. I have also realized that I endow some things with a personality of sorts - "how can I throw this out? It's been a hard-working pair of shoes" - even though the heel is worn down and the inside is fraying. Decluttering is not an easy process. :-)

One thing that really helps me to get rid of things is thinking to myself, "Someone else could use this/appreciate this more than me." I like what you said about sentimental items from those loved ones who have passed away. You can't keep everything and having just one or two items is really all you need. The memories you made spending time with that person far outweigh any material item.

I love the "would I buy this again?" question! With clothes, I ask myself if I would pay $5 for it, if I saw it at the thrift store right now. If it's not worth $5, then it's not worth keeping. But I never thought of expanding that to a more general "would I buy this?" for all categories. Great idea.

I deemed it isn't worth it!!! I'm currently undertaking a major declutter of our home's inventory.

First thing your house is beautifully decorated & renovated, love it! Second- I come from a hoarding parent, I’ve picked up some of their traits & sunk cost has never really been an issue for me. I’m happy to let it go even with a price tag if I fully don’t like it, but that hardly ever happens. For me, it’s an attachment issue & maybe a scarcity mindset. I’ll find one good quality about an item that has qualities that aren’t so good such as cute color but doesn’t fit well & I struggle letting it go..I think others feel the same. It’s not about the money spent but clinging to the item emotionally. Guess we all have are reasons for hanging on. I also feel guilty getting rid of gifts from others but have mostly overcome that yay!

I love to thrift and buy things to decorate my home, but I’m also very minimal. I’ve had a ton of success selling things on Facebook marketplace and then using that money to buy new things as my style changes, and as a way to keep things fresh WITHOUT holding onto anything. Family members have asked for my help selling their old things and when they say how much they want for certain items I am usually shocked! I think that they aren’t as successful maybe because they are too attached to sell things at a decent price. I have learned, from you and others as well, that these are just things! I’m frugal too and don’t spend too much on things so when I am ready to part with them and let others enjoy them, I sell them at a price that is reasonable because I don’t have an emotional attachment to them. This video made soooo much sense and I hope I can share it with my family members to help them!!! Thank you Dawn!!

How to do real declutter ????
@sarahburke8955
@sarahburke8955 3 жыл бұрын
@@gwendolynwilcox9095 Pick a space that bothers you, set a timer, and get rid of trash first! Then, clear out anything that doesn't belong there. That's a start. Once you start clearing surfaces, you can decide whether you want to clear out things that are just place keepers... things that have "always" been there.

I’m 26 and my mother and I were extremely close. The best of friends. 2 years ago she passed away from terminal cancer. I was there the whole way and helped her through her process at the end.. she was a recovering hoarder and we used to pick little things to go through at a time with her permission to let go. I would bring her things and she would say yes or no. It was a productive feeling to pass the time for both of us and hopefully also make the time she had left feel a little lighter.. things took a quick downward turn and suddenly the stuff didn’t matter. Only making sure she got to go to Florida (her favorite place) one more time and spending all the time in the world going swimming and doing whatever it was she wanted in the moment. I inherited everything of hers and for the last 2 years it has been so hard for me to let anything go.. i have 2 storage units of her things.. I felt like the protector of her things now.. She didn’t get a chance to give me permission.. and somehow each and every item was a piece of her.. the feeling like it should’ve still been in her home and I could still experience it for the rest of the time she should have been here.. feeling terrified I would forget something that triggered the slightest memory because I struggle with memory.. which is saying a lot because I am the opposite of her. I have ADHD and ironically clutter just overstimulates me and makes me shut down.. and now hearing you speak about not only it being “her” possession but also HOW I want to remember her and WHAT I remember about the item gives me so much relief and hope… thank you and bless you.🙏🏻❤️

This video gave me a really good idea that I will run by my mom. So most of the my grandma's stuff is in a storage unit and it's been there for at least 2 years and I'm not really sure what's in it. I'd like to talk to my mom and we both make lists of items that remind us of her and then maybe only get those out of the unit so everything else goes

thanks Dawn you're helping me a lot. It's taking more time than I'd like, but it's 34 years in the same house. I'm going in the right direction and my kids are grown so I just have to have the energy to get it done. Also wanted to let your sister Diane known I'm really enjoying the Passion New Testament. I'm still nursing and the Covid can get me down a bit, but you always cheer me up. Thanks again and God Bless.

This is so relatable! One thing I noticed as I started decluttering is how other people’s opinions or the experience I had with an item impacted me to keep. For example if I bought a dress with a friend or my mom and they told me they loved it on me so I bought it even though I wasn’t sold on it and then it ended up in my closet because I felt guilted to get rid it! Or if someone came over and told me they liked an outfit or an item in my home - its amazing how we get wrapped into thinking something is worth more value by the opinions of others or the experience we had with an item!! As I have decluttered our whole apartment I really started to keep myself in check with why I was keeping something and if the reason really was for me or for someone else. Thank you Dawn for all the amazing help and guidance so far! Love ya :)

Great printable! Really thoughtful and thought provoking. I am finding that there are things I just don't want to get rid of because I enjoy seeing them. It does not lead to a minimalist life though. I probaly need some Swedish death cleaning questions. I also quickly decluttered for a renovation 2.5 years ago. Now I am looking for some of the things I wanted to use once the house was finished, and they are gone...

Love this channel and I'm grateful for your devotion! I have one more consideration with "sunk money"... It's already gone. Getting rid of the item doesn't get the money back, keeping it and not using it doesn't get the money back. Now, an unwanted item is taking up space, time or brain energy. The wasted money is gone, so a new question emerges: how valuable is the space or time or brain energy this item consumes?

I am just stumbling upon your channel and had no idea how much I needed all this information. I just sold my parents' home and boxed everything up and brought it to a container on my property. One of the areas I am struggling with is a HUGEHUGE HUGE collection of family photos, some even printed onto large canvases. Do you have a video already on how to manage something like this?

I’ve changed my mind. Instead of fretting about the cost of the things I purge I think on the experience of that chapter. I’m also very blessed with steady employment during covid quarantine and where I live there’s donation spots at the place where we take the trash. I like the idea of reframing our self talk to almost remove ownership of things. We are all stewards. What do we want to be stewards of?
