I forget what the term is, but they're from the time when your last name was literally your occupation. "Thatcher," you thatch roofs. "Turner," you turn wooden bowls on a lathe. "Carter," you make carts. Indicating that all these people have ancestors who were working class, and yet are trying to present themselves as all sophisticated and refined. I don't mean that they're pretending to be upper class or nobility or anything, but that they're trying to pass themselves off as better than they are. Or something. . . it's tough to explain.

Of the 3 senior officers at the beginning, the one you liked (but didn't recognise) is Steve Coogan. He's best known for his Alan Partridge character whom he played across The Day Today (a spoof news show), Knowing Me, Knowing You (a spoof chat show), I'm Alan Partridge (a sitcom) - any of which you'd surely enjoy - and the movie Alpha Papa. On a totally different point, "Fuzz" was a popular term for the police back in the 70s/80s. The joke used to go "I was chatting to a girl the other night, and I asked her, 'have you ever been picked up by the fuzz?', and she replied 'no, but I've been swung round by the t1ts'." Have you watched Baby Driver? Also directed by Edgar Wright, more action than comedy, but IMO just as perfect as this.

I've only been to the UK once, and by coincidence I visited the town of Wells, Somerset, where this was later filmed. I thought the place looked familiar when I saw the movie, and it was a moment of real delight to realize that it looked familiar for good reason. The town is well named, for there are artisian wells (from the surrounding cave systems of the Mendip Hills) that supply crystal clear water, routed down the gutters of the high street, keeping them clean. Wookey Hole cave is a few miles away: my American caving mentor's father, Oliver Craig Wells (grandson of H. G. Wells) did cave diving exploration there in the 1950s, which fact put the town on my bucket list. The gate to the Wells Cathedral area is shown in the film (11:53 for example), though the Cathedral itself is not. (I imagine because it would have given the real location away to British audiences). There are swans there who are trained to pull a bell rope for treats. I should add that the countryside of Somerset looks a good deal like the classic Mammoth Cave area of south Central Kentucky, my own stamping ground, which is down to England and North America being mushed together as the supercontinent Gondwanaland when the limestone was laid down, 400 million years ago. Shout out to any British reading this, I love your country more than you can know. "One day, I shall come back...." The desk sergeant and his doppleganger are played by the insanely brilliant comedian, composer, and ornithologist Bill Bailey, well known globally to fans of the BBC quiz show "QI" [Quite Interesting].

LOL! GREAT reaction! I love watching people watch movies I love for the first time and have them react with so much enthusiasm! By the way, underneath the mask, Janine is possibly the most famous actor in this film: Cate Blanchett. In an interview, the director, Edgar Wright: "The first joke was basically that you have an emotive scene with him saying farewell to his girlfriend and being very sentimental and you can't see her face. [...] In a weird way this whole Cate Blanchett thing was sort of a slight kind of joke on that. ‘Let's get an Oscar winner in there but not see her face.’ And she was totally up for that joke. She loved it. And for the record - and this is why Cate Blanchett goes to heaven - she gave her fee to charity. She is one nice lady.”

I guess I get to be the one to say it. Yay! The stabby Santa Claus was Peter Jackson. His CSI girlfriend was Cate Blanchett. Your ears perked up when she spoke so I saw that you recognized her but didn’t quite. And the best part about the twist is that it’s given away in the first 10min. When Angel says to his chief, “You can’t just make people disappear.” And he replies, “Yes I can. I’m the chief of police.” And it was for the same reason. Angel was making them all “look bad”. This movie is beautiful on 2nd and 3rd watches as with all Edgar Wright movies.

Hope you read this Miranda but you need to watch "The World's End" if you liked this - it's the Final work of Wrigh and Pegg in the Cornetto Trilogy. - The Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy (also sometimes referred to as the Cornetto trilogy or the Blood and Ice Cream trilogy)[1][2] is an anthology series of British comedic genre films directed by Edgar Wright, written by Wright and Simon Pegg, and produced by Nira Park. The series stars Pegg and Nick Frost, with several other actors, including Bill Nighy, Rafe Spall and Martin Freeman, also appearing in all three films. The trilogy consists of Shaun of the Dead (2004), Hot Fuzz (2007), and The World's End (2013).

Hot Fuzz is my second favorite movie of all time - it's just so incredibly well directed (Edgar Wright's best work, and that's saying *a lot*), written, edited and acted, it's hard to fully appreciate just how great it is while also still believing it's even real. Timothy Dalton in particular is an absolute delight in this movie - he clearly had a ton of fun in the role and it fully shines through. Nicolas Angel is, imho, also Simon Pegg's strongest role to date, and the way him and Nick Frost bounce off of each other as a buddy cop duo . . . just . . . chef's kiss.

Excellent movie. Another great movie with Keanu and Swayze? Youngblood. Although Keanu had a much smaller role in that one

I love this film for so many reasons, its such a good commentary of the small English rural town (in this case Wells in Somerset, a place I've visited a few times as I live pretty close) where everyone does know each other, look out for each other but also are very protective of their world aand often don't trust outsiders, especially from London. The US equivalent would be an HOA, instead of threating fines for your grass being too long, would run you over with the mower

Timothy Dalton, former James Bond agent 007, played the head bad guy, Simon Skinner. Perhaps the best casting in this movie everything considered.
