It is often said that the older we get the wiser we get. It is good to stop and smell the roses and enjoy riding a motorcycle for the joy it gives not always for just the adrenaline rush from the speed. In this day and age of speed cameras and radar not to mention traffic, motorcycle riding is not what it used to be, fast bikes are just too fast now, back in 1985 my GPZ 900 would do over 150 mph on the road and that was 115 HP, now we have over 200 HP, where will this madness ever stop. Sadly bikes like the RE are like Nokia flip phones, they will only sell to people who realise that in reality that is all you need to make a phone call.

Carl Fogarty said years ago that road bikes are way too overpowered for most riders. He is right of course. Most 200hp machines are ridden by people with insecurities. Horsepower doesn't make up for that.

You absolutely hit the nail on the head. The 1000cc superbikes are dangerous toys that can tempt you into trouble and you can't use any of the power legally over 5000 rpm. 650cc hits the sweet spot, it's got enough power to entertain, and you ain't worried all the time about getting a scratch on it or getting it nicked. Good old fashioned wind in your hair fun biking. Great!

I agree. A future 650 Bonneville should put out 47bhp so it's A2 compliant. It would take away Street Twin and T100 sales, but Triumph might be losing sales of those to the Interceptor anyway . If Triumph had made a 125 I might have bought one of those last year. Time to bring back the Triumph Cub name.

This biked topped the MCIA registration stats for naked bikes with 144 registered in UK for May alone, it also came top in the 126-650cc sector. A lot of these could be dealer demonstrators but is still a healthy number for RE. Wonder how many were registered in Indian? Good luck to RE and thanks TMF for informing us in the usual professional manner!

As it happens I live very close to The Bike Den in North Bushey, and I’ve been a long-time browser in there. Largely on the strength of your vids I took that very same demo bike out for an extended test ride last week over a very varied route of my own devising. I couldn’t agree more with your assessment; I was thoroughly delighted. Long story short, I’ve put my money where my delight is and ordered one in the chrome and black finish (“Glitter and Dust” is a silly name for it, I think, but it looks terrific). So thank you, Mr TMF, and long may you continue keeping the rubber side down.

Great. Thanks. You and Stuart Fillingham (one of my other favourite bloggers) have both been very positive about this RE Interceptor. Something about it grabs my interest too. I have a fairly new T120, which is good if taking a pillion regularly, but I feel tempted to try this RE which looks like a keeper to just go out and have a blast on occasionally.
@karlosh2422
@karlosh2422 5 жыл бұрын
But would you keep the T120 and the Interceptor ? If I got a second bike it'd have to be quite different to one I already have. Ie a Triple or four cylinder considering the bike I am soon to collect my is a retro twin. Plus a different look. So for me a second bike could be a Triumph Street Triple or Honda Cb650r.
@petewebb6952

karlosh - yes I’ve considered the Honda 650 which is a 4 cylinder. I had a PAN ST1300 once, 4 cylinder, but it got a bit boring after awhile. I had a XRT Tiger, but not mad about triple engines, although i recognise their engine uptake...

Street Twin is more expensive, but then it has a lot more power, traction control and is probably built better. Service intervals are better on the Street Twin. The question is are all of those worth an extra £2600? (I slightly prefer the more modern look of the Street Twin but I do quite like the look of the Interceptor)

@karlosh9286
@karlosh9286 5 жыл бұрын
@@leanatale7251 I can certainly understand that . I was going to look at an Interceptor until I found out about the waiting time. You could get a second hand Street Twin for not too much difference in price. Admittedly the 2016 to 2018 Street Twins (54BHP) don't put out much more power than an new Interceptor (47 BHP), but the Street Twin has a lot more torque, so it easily pulls without too much gear changing. The 2019 Street Twins put out 64BHP, so that's a good deal more power than an Interceptor, but then not everyone wants masses of power . I guess it depends all on how you intend to ride. The clutches on Triumphs are lovely. I've ridden a 2019 Street and Speed Twin. They both had clutches as light as the Honda CB125R that I've just sold . The training school Honda CB600F I just passed my test on had a clutch where I felt like I was training my left hand to crush billiard balls ! I can't say I know what an Interceptor clutch is like , but it could be worth comparing to a Street Twin. I found the standard 760 mm seat height a bit low on a 2019 Street Twin ( I'm 5 foot 11 inches / 180 cm tall ) . Although Triumph sell a bench seat that makes it higher (something like 30mm higher for £300 more !). For some people the height of a Street Twin seat is ideal.

It's almost as if you know my situation and are trying to sell me the bike! I'm a mature(ish) new rider and after doing my direct access went straight onto a '99 Honda Hornet 600, and i'll be honest, it was too much bike for me, it encouraged me to go quickly, and I just didn't have the ability to go with it. The inevitable happened, and I came off it, breaking 2 fingers and fracturing one of my vertebrae. I swore I was done with bikes, but the urge to get back on one is strong. My V-Strom was a pig to do, had to buy a set of angled tyre valves so I could get my electronic tyre pressure gauge on the valve. It is something we should all do on a weekly basis.

Just the pillion footrests too close to the exhaust pipes, but now you can install some metal parts to avoid burning your boot soles. Fantastic bike.

@@juanjoviadero7182 Also, the seat becomes uncomfortable after a half hour. RE sells a padded seat cover in brown or black for $95 USD; or you could pick up a custom seat. Also, replacing the stock mufflers with aftermarket ones gives a nicer sound and saves you about ten kilos in weight. A 2018 Triumph Street Twin (900 cc, 65 hp, modern electronics) and a 2020 Royal Enfield INT 650 (650 cc, 45 hp, basic electronics) are about the same price here in the US. Decisions, decisions....

@@jamesdarnell8568 here RE is cheaper than Triumph and some people say it's better built. It's more simple and faible. Time wil tell whether is true or false. I made the decision and some day i'l get one, probably in Orange Crush so that the different price with the Chrome & Dust will make it able to put some extras on it (one of them is a more confortable seat).

There is a negative text review from a guy who grew up in India. He says he would not ride a RE (he seems to be talking only about the bullet) upon threat of torture. His comments are quite lengthy but anecdotal. One I remember is he came across a guy on the side of the road with a bike that had slipped the chain. They eventually got it back on but couldn't adjust the tension, so it was unrideable. He also said the bike was a death trap in city traffic because of the poor handling.

Had a road test on one of these and didn't like it at all felt like I was sitting on top of it .. Mind you I am a stumpy .. Then on the off chance on returning from the test ride the dealer suggested I try the continental GT .. Wow!! Loved it everything felt right engine was great riding position felt so much better totally different bike. So if you ride an interceptor and don't like it just try its brother the continental GT!! Great fun bike

But does it make that TingPingTing sound when it’s cooling down after a great ride? Loved falling asleep to that when my GS1000 was parked under my bedroom window back in the 70’s. And the smell of it after being washed with Gunk.....Ahhhhhhh.

Everyone who has reviewed this on youtube doesn't really test it's cornering capability. Does it go around corners, does it track well ? does it flex ? Not talking about knee scraping stuff but something you can plant into a corner and know you'll come out where its pointed. If I wanted a bike to go straight only, I'd buy a postie bike or Harley.

Any info on those aftermarket mirrors? The standard ones are a bit on the rough side. Also, any opinion as to whether that fly screen is any good? It's in nearly all the reviews, but also is not standard. Does it do the job at faster speeds and longer distances, or would the bigger one be advised? It would also be a lot nicer clear rather than tinted, imho
@RockinWhitlow
@RockinWhitlow 5 жыл бұрын
stimgaze: I rode the same demo bike myself and found the mirrors excellent. They’re Royal Enfield’s own extra-cost accessories. I haven’t specified them for the one I’ve ordered but I can always fit them later if the standard mirrors aren’t satisfactory. I didn’t find the flyscreen had much effect on a brief motorway ride, if any at all. And it was the taller of the two options available. So I’ve similarly ordered my bike naked. I am used to having a screen, so I can always add a third-party aftermarket one later if I feel the need.

It's the spiritual descendant of my '72 Triumph Tiger 650, which I think had 39 or so bhp. I also noticed recently it's still on the road, so if you see JML 47K, give it a wave.

I am from India and own 2014 Bonneville SE (A3) among few other bikes. I said exactly what you said about RE interceptor 650 in comparison to A3 and the Street Twin. So much better and much cheaper for what it does. Considering most of us stay between 120 to 140kmph on highways. And I got nearly lynched for saying that in my Bonnie group. 😂

I rude from Margao to Hampi on an old 350 Bullet back in 94, no highways back then - it was amazing , RE have kept the faith and the vibe of the old Bullet with modern engineering, am currently trying to persuade my Wife that its not crazy for an old boy to get back on the road and Interceptor is the bike to do it on _ she rode pillion on the old 350 Bullet in India, so she doesn't lack courage or experience....;-)

They have always been bloody expensive. Greedy guts all over, and Yamaha are raking it in as a result. Can't take the 3000 check and 6000 valve clearance, would need the tools and instruction to do this prior to sale.
