Good review. I share your enthusiasm. I've ridden several electric bikes and I am on my second electric car. For whatever it's worth, sail mode is actually the most efficient mode. I wish it were available on electric cars. While regeneration is cool and is truly efficient in stop and go traffic it is easy, almost unavoidable, to regen on the open road when you are not trying to slow down. Regen at best only returns about 30% of the energy it consumes to the battery. On the open road at a steady throttle constant small variations in toad surface, incline, and wind have the bike often exceeding the speed of the throttle setting and a small amount of regeneration occurs. With the typical 20-25% regen efficiency that means 75-80% of that energy is wasted, and you weren't even trying to slow down. These small moments of regen don't waste that much energy each time but it does add up. The very most efficient way to drive or ride is to never use the brake and coast to aq stop when you must. While this is not practical or safe keeping that fact in mind can help you remember to slow well ahead of stopping by gradually reducing speed. My 53 mile range Chevrolet got an indicated 70 miles of range today by driving carefully. It's fun to try to get m,ax range but it does require a high degree of attention. The bike I rode with the highest potential for efficiency was the Brammo (no longer in business). It had a traditional motorcycle gearbox and even a clutch. This could provide either very high efficiency or mind bending acceleration. To sail I could just pull in the clutch. And range... there is NO motorcycle today that gets 500 miles range. Mine get about 150 miles before the light comes on but that is likely just me. As DC quick charging becomes widely available (it is already in the UK) and bikes get quick charging ports installed (available on Zero motorcycles today) you can stop and simply grab a handful of electrons while on the ride. It's really no harder than gassing a bike and considerably less hazardous. DC chargers are Much faster than AC chargers and the new European standard ones will be faster still. As always, I really enjoy this channel. Thanks for posting things about bikes other than the usual bike magazine headline machines.

Great for the environment (although there is a small quid pro quo in terms of grid energy used for charging). Be interesting to see if battery technology can evolve to a point where a full recharge can be executed in the same time it takes to fill a tank....that will be the game changer!

Nissan has had battery options for years. It's $5k to replace 40kWh. They had a program where you could basically rent them too and Nissan would continue to own them afterwards... b/c even after the cells aren't suitable for auto use they're still at ~90% capacity for other uses (ie battery wall).

I think you'll find sail mode (coasting ) is very efficient . If you get into hypermiling that is the most efficient rather than trying to recharge , keeping up momentum is king in hypermiling . I can get 740+ miles from a tank (64 mpg ) from a VW 1.6D golf plus, hypermiling without doing anything to silly . A dutch guy with a Tesla can get 600km 1 charge hypermiling , (my wee bit of trivia ) This bike looks FAB . Tks for great video.

I may have got this completely wrong, but isn't "sail" mode potentially the most efficient one? To my understanding it cuts the power completely when the throttle is off and you spend no electricity. Right? So you wind her up and then only occasionally tap the throttle to keep the speed and every downhill stretch is basically a "free ride". Which means you don't even need regenerative braking, just use the throttle sparingly.
@TheMissendenFlyer6 жыл бұрын
Yes that’s my understanding too....great fun to use too...thanks for watching...
@mickeypopa6 жыл бұрын
Sure thing, thanks to you too for reviewing this scooter. :) Coming from scooters, they will always have a place in my heart. I personally don't think we'll ever get to 500 miles per charge (or anywhere near that) simply because of physical limitations, but even if it's 150-200 that would be fantastic if nothing else than for the short weekend trips outside town. Electric ones are really something else, stealthy little buggers. And so easy to own, nothing to worry about except keeping it charged up. :)
@paulharrison81556 жыл бұрын
I rode one of these a while back and was well impressed although did end up buying a MK1 T-Max mainly due to cost This scooter would be perfect for the daily commute unless, of course, you worked more than 80 miles away from home. Leave home on a full charge then charge for free at work for the journey back. What's not to like? The bike I rode topped out at a maximum 85mph on the clock and had a 85 mile range showing with a 92% charge I liked the regenerative braking feature around town but 'Sail' mode out of town is also quite fun. The downside is the cost . For me it would have to be a used model. Low mileage (ex demo) models come up occasionally for sale at Motorrad dealers so you do get a BMW backed 2 year warranty but what you don't get is the £1500 Government EV Grant as that remains with the original owner, which is it's an ex demo the dealer has had. I'd be looking for another £1500 off any price the dealer places on a used C Evolution

Thanks for a great review. I just bought mine a couple of weeks ago as an ex BMW-exec bike so managed to get a £5k discount on a 1k mls bike. I totally agree with reference to the scrolling through 12 modes to go from temp to time so I will try and get it down to around 5. My only addition to this is; The throttle sensitivity. I would like a quicker action throttle with perhaps a third less movement. The screen I guess is short to reduce drag, but it does nothing to protect you from the wind. So I'll probably have to buy the touring screen. Overall though after trading from the C650GT I think its a great step up with surprising performance to me and all the other bike riders I have come across

As per usual, nice video Mr TMF. Have to pick you up on one statement though... sorry! At around 19:30 you talk about the range and charge time and say 'they're getting really close on that'. With range of (often a lot) less than 100 miles and recharge times measured in hours, I would have to say they're not close, not by a country mile. Battery technology is coming on in leaps and bounds, that is true, but until you can get ~150 miles, and recharge in 5 minutes, these will remain commuter/urban machines. I think it's also true that the BMW and the Zero machines are limited to around 80mph? Might have been nice to get some info on other things like insurance (I know that can vary, but just a relative idea...) and battery pack replacement costs. I know these have 5 year battery warranty, but if someone gets one that is a few years old, they might end up having to replace the pack outside of warranty. I certainly couldn't afford the 'new' price of these, or the Zero bikes.

Amazing. In the future, when the travel range goes up and the price comes down these type of scooters / bikes will be an interesting option. I have to wonder what the long term battery costs etc may be, once they get a few years on? Time will tell i guess.
@rubberneck28554 жыл бұрын
With some electric car manufacturers, the customer buys the car, not the batteries. The company retains ownership of the batteries (not sure why) but it might be that the company replaces the batteries in the electric vehicle say after five years or so. Maybe one of the other viewers knows more about it and can explain.

Nice bike. Good one BMW. I would like to move onto an electric bike next, depending on price, once my RT has gone past its sell-by date. What would be cool would be to take out the RT engine and gearbox and put an electric motor and batteries into that space (maybe even incorporate the existing rear swing arm, shaft, final drive and rear suspension). I hope there would be universal motors & batteries available to fit into whatever vehicle you have in the future.

An interesting development but still a l-o-n-g way to go before electric motorcycles/scooters can be considered practical and *affordable* transport. These machines seemed to be intended primarily for urban use yet many people in cities live in apartments. How will they recharge an e-bike?

As scoots go, this one is a looker, although range is rubbish. The finish looks really good, as does the paint on this model. Not sure I’m ready to have one, but wouldn’t mind a go on one 😁

Good review mr Flyer, the 2 things no body seems to mention , how long before the battery pack needs replacement, guess around 5 yrs , and how much to replace , my guess Mega Money these are the big two failings , the fact that they aren’t really green when you use fossil fuels to charge, so not that green ,, the range then charging time,, so I’ll stick to my noisy , fuel drinking bike cheers Shane uk 🇬🇧

I agree. It's so difficult to get definitive information. From what I understand the battery pack will begin to start loosing capacity after around 500 full discharge/recharge cycles. The point at which you find you need to change the battery pack will be the point at which the range of the bike is no longer sufficient for your needs. So assuming it's not fully discharged every day and not used every day your 5 year estimate could well be in the ball park.

@@johnarmstrong3782 Mine still has the full 160km range after as good as 50.000km on the odometer. As for replacing the battery, my local BMW dealer says it costs 5000 euro including taxes and labour. But that is for the long range battery. I doubt the battery needs replacing much before 85-100.000km. I ride it as a primary commuter for about 80-90km a day. It takes about 30 minutes to do a 20-80% charge on an 11kW charger.

@@majordelays4909 It's probably the best scooter I have ever owned. Especially for commuting I don't believe there's anything that gets close to it. And with a bit of planning you can still go on a sunday cruise. Just plan to stop for lunch somewhere with a public charger nearby and it's no real inconvenience at all.

What an interesting bike! I have yet to try a high end electric bike. I have a cheap electric scooter, bottom of the range! I always find it struggles to accelerate and reach top speed when it's low on juice.

A great bike but the price is madness At the moment is listed for £14330.00 Government discount £1500 So you can have it for: £12830.00 Smh... Good review thx 👍

Very, very, interesting. As I own a T120, which is such a good all-rounder, I can’t really justify to myself another motorcycle; but I could justify an electric m’cycle. Is this top of the range? Yes it would be great seeing what it’s like to live with an electric m’cycle. Cheers, Pete

You wear earplugs to cut out the frequencies that cause most damage to your hearing, those are caused by wind noise not engine noise......so always wear earplugs when riding :-)
@rubberneck28554 жыл бұрын
It's not about WANTING to wear ear plugs, it's about NEEDING to wear ear plugs. With the big fairing on the FJR1300 you can't ride without ear plugs, your ears would be ringing. Naked bikes have less air directed at the rider. I don't bother with earplugs on my naked bikes so maybe anyone saying they don't bother with earplugs maybe has a bike that doesn't have design that directs airflow up at the rider's head.

Good looking scooter and I'm a supporter of the technology and future bikes this will bring with it . However until the mileage range increases ,charge time improve and prices become more competitive I'll continue to wait.

I’m surprised, with the good relationship you have with BMW, that you never reviewed the other BMW scooters. I’d be interested in your thoughts on the C400 line…used to be the X but I think it’s the GT now. Similar in size/functionality to the Yamaha Xmax you reviewed and seemed to like.

£13,865 (C Evolution Plus) before any accessories, just to potter around town. Still a long, long, long way off before it can be considered anywhere near viable alternative transport. Remember, the Mayor of London's long term plan is not to have any private vehicles (electric or otherwise) in London without paying a charge, so there's no offset in that regard against the price. Any idea how far/long the batteries last before they need to be replaced (can they be replaced?) or become inefficient in holding their charge? Anywhere near equivalent to 100,000 miles?
