I completely understand the view this bike is underpowered. I own one and I am big unit at 120kg so 60 miles an hour is about top speed for me. But that is what I love about it - it makes you approach your rides with a different mind set. I've owned a Harley Fat Bob, Indian Chief Vintage, Yamaha MT01 - all awesome bikes in their own ways. But the Classic is my absolute favourite - it really makes me think about my rides and riding and has got under my skin like no other. bike I've owned. Would I say no to, say, 10 extra hp? Probably not, but only if it did not change the character of the bike.

Well said - Yes I have owned much faster bikes but they felt so sterile. The little Classic 350 is not slow, it's just not fast. Though to be honest - when I ride it does hurt my face - from smiling so wide. As for the Triumph 400 - sure they are faster but they look so ugly & plastic.

Morning Andy. I agree that you do tend to get car drivers up your bum, and I do the same, just wave them past. The Classic 350 will do the dual carriageway’s etc, but more at home on B’s and unclassified’s. I did an honest long term owners review recently, pointing out the negatives around the quality of some of the components, but overall, I love the Classic 350. Although the new Triumph 400’s are a threat, I think they appeal to a different buyer. Too modern looking for those who want something retro, which is where the Classic wins. Great ride !

I tried a technique several years ago that actually works to make vehicles back off your tail. I take my left hand off the handlebar, let my arm hang down and open and close my fist. I’m appearing to be trying to shake off tightness or getting blood flow back into my hand, but what I’m really doing is showing the person behind me that he/she is following a live person, not a machine. It has worked many times for me in traffic on the freeway, I think it’s just using psychology, instead of some kind of road rage.

You may find that you’re actually riding under the speed limit, which can be annoying for people who want to travel AT the speed limit. Try calibrating your Speedo against a gps ( or simple app on your phone) and you may find traveling a little faster stops people from tailgating you.

I own a 350 classic, and have watched so many reviews on youtube, but for me, no one has ever mentioned how relaxing it is to ride! Because the power is limited, you go with the flow, and the riding position is very comfortable also.......coupled with the torque from its long stroke engine all combines to relax the rider, so they can enjoy the bimble.

I returned to biking after a very long lay off ( around 20 years) , my last bike was a ZX7R . I have a classic 350 in the same colour and I must admit it does everything I need to. It’s not a motorway bike but it will sit happily at 70MPH , keeps up with traffic in most situations and is a joy to ride. I don’t need a rocket of a bike anymore, I just enjoy the Enfield for what she is but it’s each to their own. Great review though.

Great chassis. Bit too heavy. And in my opinion, a tad overrated. I just didn't get the tingle when I rode it. In fact, I preferred the Voge 300 Rally. Controversial? Moi?

After over 2 years on the Classic I can say this will be my last bike, 54 years of riding this bike is the best bike I have owned. The magic for me is the long throw low revving j series engine, I guess the extra power of the 400 Triumphs will without doubt make them faster than the Classic but will be a higher revving engine. After 4 years riding a Triumph Street Triple an absolutely fantastic bike it was the high revs that finally got to me, hence why for me the Classic fits the bill for me as the ultimate all round bike. Unless you need to travel at over 70 mph for prolonged periods the Classic is a superb bike, great tourer, enjoy the ride and scenery, instead of blasting at full speed all the time. 😊

Mmm. I was in the market for a Classic 500 when these came out, so I took a look......and went for a Classic 500 and still have no regrets with this decision at all. If you want a thoroughly modern bike that just looks a bit like a Classic 500 (from a distance), then the new 350 is perhaps worth considering but that wasn't what owning a Royal Enfield Classic is all about for me. The 500 is a gentle evolution of a 1950's bike into a machine with thoroughly modern features (fuel injection, electric start, disk brakes front and rear, ABS etc. and yet it still is the 1950's bike, with it's mono chassis frame and an overhead valve engine, giving it the look, sound and feel of a 1950's bike but with modern reliability. If you then look in more detail, the Classic 500 has 30%+ more power and 30%+ more torque. Very important I think. It also has hydraulic self adjusting tappets, so there's no expensive time consuming 'fuel tank off job' at every service interval. As well as electric starting there's also a kick starter on the 500, should you have low battery power. The triangular side boxes are all metal, not just metal fronted as on the new 350. The oval side panel is also metal, not plastic. The seat has genuine working springs on the 500, rather than the 'fake spring' option on the new 350. The instrument dials are glass fronted with polished alloy surrounds on the 500, they are plastic 'glass' with chromed plastic surrounds with the new 350. The ignition key surround is also polished metal on the 500, it's more flimsy chromed plastic on the new 350. There is an analogue traditional odometer on the 500, the one on the new 350 is a cheaper LCD display within a plastic chrome surround, and plastic glass, although it does have the benefit of a trip meter. The 500 is a Euro 4 bike and so very tuneable. Being Euro 5, the new 350 is currently very difficult to tune due to the restrictive ECU. In the end, if you want a great value totally modern commuter bike that looks like a Classic then the new 350 is really good but in all other departments the original Classic 500 is in a totally different league entirely. Just my view 🙂

Great video! I'm an expat living in the Philippines. 400 cc is more than enough for the roads here. There are no carriage ways here. A scrambler type motorcycle is optimal because some of the roads are not in the best condition. The RE classic would be great here in most cases until you start to hit the hill mountain roads. That's when something like a Triumph, CF Moto, Himalayan 450 and others begin to make more sense in the Philippines market. I think the classic is a great second bike. But I think eventually you will find the limitations.

Of course they are complete opposites, I just fancied something more relaxed, for pootling on a Sunday, but didn't want the hassle of a vintage bike, with it's spares /reliability issues. And it's great, going around the villages of Wiltshire and Hampshire, it takes little imagination for you to be in the 40s or 50s. I did change the air filter to a dna upgrade, made a noticeable difference, it's livelier and louder, nothing else is required. Thanks for the video.

Watching this back-to-back with your ‘thanks, but no thanks’ wrap up of the big GS, shows how owners are being more honest about what they need and not what they want, so it’s no wonder bikes like the Triumph 400s, and the RE 350s and new Himalayan are proving so popular (especially adding in fuel economy, VED, etc). I traded a 12 month old intercontinental crotch rocket for my Classic 350 and have absolutely no doubts or regrets about my decision. Perfect for pootling and the odd commute, although, like you mentioned in the GS vid, there’s no shortage of RE350 owners who have taken theirs across Europe or North America. I think you’re doing Triumph an injustice. They are a tiny company next to the might and wealth of Royal Enfield and its parent company, so of course people are excited when they enter a new sector. For their size Triumph punch well above their weight in multiple sectors which I find both astonishing and make them an exciting company. They are privately owned and plough all their profits back into the business not to fat cat shareholders. I think their business model is exemplary and mirrors many of the successful German companies. I’ve owned 5 different Enfields and 6 Triumphs and I love both brands. They bring something unique into the marketplace and both have a great heritage.👍

You were right to lock both bikes up though as other potential visitor / opportunist thieves may well have stolen them to quickly sell on in order to afford a breakfast at the cafe!

Nice videos mate. I'm picking a Classic 350 up on Sunday; the Red Chrome model, and I can't wait! After owning Italian sportsbikes for over 20 years, I wanted a bike for poodling around and touring: something comfortable, and, by no means last, economical! The 350 Classic ticks these boxes, plus it looks genuinely retro, unlike Triumph's overpriced offerings. As for lack of power, I hired a Classic for a couple of weeks in India last winter, and it felt more powerful than 20bhp due to the decent torque. I quickly fell in love with it ❤ Funny thing is, just last week I was about to put a deposit on yet another sports bike - a Ducati V4S. Thankfully, common sense prevailed: What am I going to gain by having another gas guzzling red rocket ship at my disposal, cept maybe the loss of my licence, or possibly an early death? ⚰️ Instead, I went for the RE, which is going to provide me with such a different motorcycling experience. I'll be able to enjoy the countryside in comfort, rather than tearing around at hyper speeds on a two wheeled torture rack, pissing off villagers. I plan to get panniers, strap on a tent and hit those B roads (assuming the weather improves before winter is upon us...). Best of all, I've saved myself over £20,000, and I'll still have a couple of red rocketships in the garage for the odd occasion I want to terrorise villagers and car drivers 😎 👍

I'd agree with you. I was watching a video by Stuart Fillingham about touring on smaller bikes and while I agree with a lot of what he said in that video (the main theme being that you don't need a large displacement motorcycle to go touring) 20 HP is fine for a beginner or anyone content to ride roads with a speed limit of 50 mph or less but for any type of road that has a speed limit of 60-70 mph you need a bike that kicks out at around 40-50HP so you are not ringing the bike's neck simply trying to keep up with the other traffic. I think most of us older folks who ride large displacement don't do so because we want to ride particularly fast but simply that more powerful bikes handle normal road speeds absolutely effortlessly. If I was picking between the Triumph or the RE350 then I'd also go with the Triumph.

The Speed 400 is a great bike, lots of fun, torquey and sounds good and comfortable sized frame too. I rode one for an hour from Blade Stratford and despite opening it up a bit, achieved 75 mpg over an hour's ride, mainly on back roads. It has a 10K mile annual service interval. The Classic 350 is a lovely ride too but not so good on fast roads and service interval is 3K miles. So the difference in price will be probably even out in service costs over the first couple of years. Look forward to your review of the Speed 400 when you can get one.

That’s a dilemma, on one side it is lovely because of its very limited power, it does not push you to speed up because it can’t, so you ride chill and relax, would you have more power you would want to use it and de facto you’ll leave this pleasant chilly riding zone. But, having one, I must admit that I’m also a bit frustrated by the lack of power... actually, as long as you stay on back roads it is perfect, once you stretch a bit further on high ways then it’s frustrating. Thanks for your review!

Had a test ride of both, two different bikes altogether. The Triumph has more go and modern looks but found the engine having to many vibes at higher speeds. The Classic 350 very smooth engine but lacking in B.H.P. but okay on B and country roads, but to be honest who likes motorways and dual carriageway's ? The Royal Enfield wins for me. With the looks and the simplicity and smooth ride. The younger ride will probably choose the Triumph and the older rider over 50 the Classic 350.

The ER Classic is very popular here, the interesting quirk that seems to be happening, is people (guys & girls) have almost been dressing in period, to clarify, I saw a lady the other day, with this amazing retro brown leather Jacket, and big old school leather full gauntlets, dragon jeans with icon brown old school 70s motor cross boots, I say all this because people were waying and giving her and the others on the classic space. I think its a fantastic bike for all new riders.

Hello Andy. Nice to see you and the Misses out and about together. I am with you on the 350 being a little under powered. If I didn't live in Canada where things are generally farther apart and the road speeds are generally faster I would certainly consider a Classic 350 but I'm not even sure they are available here. I ended up choosing a 2022 W800 and find it perfectly suited to my riding style and our road conditions. I have to be able to run 120kph (75mph) on the occasional four lane highway and run around with occasional pillion rider and the W800 does all those things perfectly while still being a basic, safe and authentic motorcycle. Love the low end torque from the long stroke 360 degree air cooled engine. Just subscribed after enjoying a few of your videos. Cheers, Bob in Canada

@@TheMissendenFlyer They are not everyone's cup of tea but I would be curious to get you opinion of them. I find the adequate power and low end torque to be a bit intoxicating. Not the only bike that has good low end torque but it is nice to have it in a mid sized easy to ride package. Makes it great fun on the back roads. Totally different beast than the likes of the Z900RS which I find to be a bit of overkill the back lanes and other mild riding conditions. The sound of the 360 degree twin is nicer than any 270 degree twin even if the stock is exhaust is a little muffled. BJ

Apparently RE Brazil flash the ECU on the classic 350s to 'de-restrict' the motor. The bikes capable of an 80mph cruising speed and I cannot for the life of me understand why RE Europe cannot or will not do the same. If I'm talking rubbish or if you know more than me Id love to hear all about it. The 350s are in a class of their own in terms of the classic asthenic but risk being left in the dust by the Triumphs if they don't up the performance so that they are safe-useable for real world fast road riding.

I love the look and sound of the classic but I know I'd find it very underpowered. It's definitely a second bike. You'd need something with more oomph. I found that with the triumph bonneville t100 I had. I got very bored with it. Swapped it for a ducati scrambler 1100. Totally different beast. Better in every. conceivable way.. Love these bikes , I think I may have a different outlook to some , yes some cars may feel the need to go by’ crack on as you’re not ruining my leisurely bimble, life’s hectic enough and this is a way of not having to go with it , I test rode the triumph 400 and I think that’s what I would call to slow , let me explain. The classic 350 is built for it’s purpose and no more , the triumph 400’ s feeling seem to ware off in a hour and I couldn’t help thinking what’s the point, just getting a bigger bike and it’s just a baby triumph , the classic 350 is just class 👌🏼 and people love stopping you and chatting about the classic 😎 Obviously all subjective and personal opinion. Good vids as usual Andy

Not a plate of chips in sight but I still was expecting a score when you left the cafe. The garden centre in Cookham isn't exactly ride out material, but they do excellent coffee and some very decent looking jacket potatoes and cakes. Made my way there the other day from Bray to get a break from the keyboard and to get the bike out in the sunshine. The prices are a bit better than at the fancy spot you mentioned which has still gone onto the list. Noted the route mishaps on the way especially when you went right instead of left in Beaconsfield. Now if you had a Beeline... 🙂

I think you nailed my feelings about the 350 classic. Having ridden the Triumphs which are lighter and more powerful this is where my money will go. The Triumph Speed 400 is £5k and the new bullet is £4.8k so really only a couple of hundred pounds in it. The classic 350 was a bit of a bargain when MotoGB were clearing out their remaining stocks and unless Triumph really jack their pricing then to me the Triumph is the bike I’d buy. Enjoyed the video with the ride to the teapot and having breakfast with Mrs Flyer.

Good day to you Andy & Mrs Flyer, I was in lovely York recently with my biking mate & we decided to have a look in the Triumph motorcycle centre, wow! The amount of bikes must of been a couple of hundred parked up outside were a mixture of owner bikers looking round & the others belonged to the company, & of course their was every Triumph model you could wish to see, including of course the brilliant 400 Speed at £5000 on the road, that would be my choice if I were lucky enough to win the lottery🤗🏍️

Loved my Classic 350 looks and absolutely fine away from dual carriageways and motorways. Unfortunately, if you live near a large conurbation then suitable routes become limited. It looks great but keeping it polished is time consuming and it is heavy. So now have a Triumph Speed 400 as a run around. Apart from the extra ooomph, it’s considerably lighter, very nimble and comes with an immobiliser and datatag. Kind of think the current price makes it a bit of a bargain. Just a note that there have been some minor starting issues with the Triumph. I look forward to your review 😀

As I type I am preparing to ride to the Cotswolds, because I can. I am lucky enough to have a few bikes, but my go-to is the lowest powered of the three (58bhp). Now it might be the onset of older age but I do find the appeal of pottering around on a less powerful machine increases by the year. Throw in the exquisite looks (IMO) of the RE Classic 350 and I do find myself seriously tempted. However.....I am more tempted by an older Suzuki TU250, which I often wonder if RE copied when designing the Classic 350? P.S. Love how you've evolved the channel over the years. You've really struck a niche (as 265k subscribers proves)

I always try and have a butchers at Riverside Manor, Cookham when I'm passing. After watching this video I had a look to see if I could find out any information - and, low and behold, it's for sale ( well it was last October ) £29,500,000 if you're in the market. Just out of my price range - well, about £29,000,000 out. Maybe next move then! I agree regarding the Classic 350 vs Triumph's new 400 series. Although I think the classic 350 will be a more relaxed ride. I do love small bikes though. I've got 4 bikes ranging from 125cc to 750cc and love my Honda Supercub C125. Still wish it had another 10mph, but it weighs next to nothing and can keep up with traffic providing that traffic isn't going more than 55mph. Carol's 125 will beat my Cub anytime, but the Cub does get 160 - 180 mpg, and I rode it from South Bucks all round Ireland last year.
