Every former champion thinks they have one more great fight in them, some pushing themselves far past their limit and continuing on well beyond their prime. Many thought the same of the legendary Hands of Stone, Roberto Duran. Duran was set to fight the current champion, Iran The Blade Barkley. Barkley was in his prime, being ten years younger than Duran. At 6’1, he stood 6 inches taller, with a 6 inch reach advantage. To top it all off, Duran would be fighting for the middleweight title, 3 divisions above his natural weight class.
Duran was no stranger to overcoming long odds. He thought he could win, now all he had to do was pull off this impossible task, and prove it.

@John D. Zephyr To really appreciate Duran, you have to watch his fights from years 1974 to 1978 down at Lightweight. He was in his 20's, quick, flexible, and even more creatively ruthless. I suggest the 2nd Esteban DeJesus fight in 1974 - a fight where Duran was forced to give up on his relentless aggression & set up his counters from the outside.

On the inside he's one of the best in the history of the sport. The "problem" with that, is that his other qualities are often overlooked. Duran was in fact a very well-rounded boxer. His defence is top notch, he was an awesome counter puncher, had great footwork, heavy hands, and he has a very high ring IQ. Obviously, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to win those fights against naturally bigger guys who were much younger. Aside from that, he was also a very _cunning_ fighter who had a big bag of tricks. He knew how to fight right on the edge. There's a fantastic breakdown of his style on Lee Wylie's channel, and I highly recommend it.

Considering that Barkley took this fight personal and wanted to get revenge on Duran for smashing his buddy Davey Moore, immediately after the fight they became super super friendly. They both gained respect for each other over the fight. Duran realised that Barkley wasn't just some fast and hard puncher - there were layers to his game and he had prepared well for Duran's various tactics. Barkley on the other hand realised how much depth there was to Duran's craft - even after preparing counters for Duran's usual habits, he still found himself outsmarted numerous times. He also probably wasn't prepared for just how hard Duran could still hit.

Your right. He did adjust many times. He was the Duran of old. No one expected that. Thats why Barkley, the overwhelming favorite going in, said Duran was the best. By the end of the fight, Duran was catching Barkley with devastating punches and Barkley could barely get his jab in. If they still fought 15, Duran probably would have ended it by KO. Or at least knocked him down again. He adjusted to the point of making Iran throw the hook, miss and counter with combinations. Great, smart, brutal, exciting fight. Two warriors. Two of the best. @Clay Johnson age is not a factor, Duran was fighting professionally before any of these other fighters. Duran had his first professional fight 1967 at battam weight 118 lbs. Marvin had his first professional fight in 1973 at middleweight. Marvin never left the division. Ray and Tommy had their first professional fight in 1977 at welterweight 147. By the time Roberto fought any of them he no longer was in his prime. There was only 1 out of the Kings that's ranked in the top 10 is Roberto Duran and fifth ranked pound for pound. @Shakur Alladin I think they were hungrier back then. Hagler fought over fifty fights before he was even recognized. Same with Duran. They could all go the distance whereas the fighters today are becoming mega millionaires before they have twenty fights. They know if they get a few big paydays they are fixed for life. Technically there are some really good fighters today but they don't have the same heart or stamina. Tyson is old school, and fighting at 54 is remarkable. Incredible. You won't find Wilder doing that. Still, boxing is the ultimate sport. Nothing compares to twelve rounds of skilled combat. Best athletes on the planet.

Truly great fighters often have more than one high point to their career. Durran was a master tactician as well as being as determined as any boxer has ever been.

Such an incredible breakdown of one of my favorite fights ever. I watched on video for first time in ‘98 or ‘99 and I probably watched it more than any other.

Hands down Robert Duran was the most dominant fighter in the light weight division. He own the light weight division. Only a few boxers have went from light weight champion to Middle Weight Champion and Duran is one of them. That is impressive!!

So Duran was cheating by holding and hitting, but the narrator tries to explain it as good boxing technique. Hell naw! Duran using Dirty tactics to gain an advantage, because he's getting his a** beat. That's a Sign of a desperate fighter. Smdh

@1millol Lol right, if it were his favorite fighter he would've stated the opposite of what he claimed.

@1millol I'm not talking about Mayweather and I'm not a fan of Mayweather. Oh you think because he's black I'm gonna disagree with you. I can't remember when I enjoyed a Mayweather fight. Run , duck, ,dog dogde and slip punches and win on points. Not a fight in my opinion. If Mayweather did what Duran did, that makes him dirty too. Now what! I call it like I see it. You being black don't mean *hit to me. Wrong is wrong!

@@siddiqiking9450 why’d you make it about being black? He just said mayweather and other great fighters do the same😂 you so pressed for what? Definitely clueless

I watched this fight on TV when it aired. I was fortunate to have recorded it. When I wanted to show someone the best fight I knew of I'd show them this. The other one was Dwight Braxton vs Evander Hollyfield for 15 rds.
