On the inside he's one of the best in the history of the sport. The "problem" with that, is that his other qualities are often overlooked. Duran was in fact a very well-rounded boxer. His defence is top notch, he was an awesome counter puncher, had great footwork, heavy hands, and he has a very high ring IQ. Obviously, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to win those fights against naturally bigger guys who were much younger. Aside from that, he was also a very _cunning_ fighter who had a big bag of tricks. He knew how to fight right on the edge. Your right. He did adjust many times. He was the Duran of old. No one expected that. Thats why Barkley, the overwhelming favorite going in, said Duran was the best. By the end of the fight, Duran was catching Barkley with devastating punches and Barkley could barely get his jab in. If they still fought 15, Duran probably would have ended it by KO. Or at least knocked him down again. He adjusted to the point of making Iran throw the hook, miss and counter with combinations. Great, smart, brutal, exciting fight. Two warriors. Two of the best. Considering that Barkley took this fight personal and wanted to get revenge on Duran for smashing his buddy Davey Moore, immediately after the fight they became super super friendly. They both gained respect for each other over the fight. Duran realised that Barkley wasn't just some fast and hard puncher - there were layers to his game and he had prepared well for Duran's various tactics. Barkley on the other hand realised how much depth there was to Duran's craft - even after preparing counters for Duran's usual habits, he still found himself outsmarted numerous times. Duran was a force of nature. I feel privileged to have watched him at the time he competed, at his peak. Barkley had this image of having been in a street gang when younger + he looked thuggish but he was an intelligent fighter + apparently was a good guy too. I never heard anything bad about him. @Shakur Alladin I think they were hungrier back then. Hagler fought over fifty fights before he was even recognized. Same with Duran. They could all go the distance whereas the fighters today are becoming mega millionaires before they have twenty fights. They know if they get a few big paydays they are fixed for life. Technically there are some really good fighters today but they don't have the same heart or stamina. Tyson is old school, and fighting at 54 is remarkable. Incredible. You won't find Wilder doing that. Still, boxing is the ultimate sport. Nothing compares to twelve rounds of skilled combat. Best athletes on the planet.

One of my favorite fights to rewatch and my personal favorite of Duran's. The Blade was no slouch, especially after he took out Hearns. But man was/is Duran great. Undersized and far from his prime, Duran showcased his patented ferocity, heart, and will that coupled with the guile and ring savvy he accrued over the years. All of this culminated in what was to be the final great highlight of, in my estimation, a top 10 all-time great. That round 11 combo that Duran unleashed to put Barkley down is a thing of beauty. I felt the same way when Pacquiao fought Thurman last year. 30 years after Duran-Barkley, Pacquiao putting up what could be his final great ring exploit to capture a world title at his advanced age drew parallels to Duran's accomplishment. Does anyone feel the same way?

I've seen hundreds of fights, but this is clearly my all-time favorite. I've always been a huge fan of Roberto Duran and this is my favorite fight of his. He was clearly the underdog in this fight. Not really because Paq always stays in perfect shape and has those long arms and quick jumpstep to get inside. He's a threat to beat anyone regardless of the oddsmakers. Plus Thurman isn't really all that special. Pretty simplistic and one dimensional. What Duran accomplished here was miraculous. He aged very quickly once he stepped up a few weight classes and was never as quick or as dangerous. He looked like an old man stepping into the ring. Barkley was a destroyer; a huge guy, big puncher with stamina and speed. He was supposed to demolish Duran, but Hands Of Stone showed that his boxing knowledge was second to NONE. He beat Barkley through skill and will, certainly not speed and power. This fight is the essence of the sweet science.
