Thats it mate, always someone worse off hey, I've been feeling sorry for myself lately but after your story of the driver with his son delivering food, its given me a well earned reality check. The minute us Aussies are permitted to travel back to our beloved Bali, we'll do our best to help get Bali back on its feet. Great vlog Damian, thank you.

The Balinese people work hard to survive. There seems to not much foot traffic in ubud. With most of the businesses closed on the streets there will a lot of people with no income, which is sad. Good on you and Winnie for giving the gojek driver a good tip.👍🙏🙏🙏😎😎😎

Some Balinese people work very hard to survive but many have never worked. Most Middle Class and wealthy Balinese never even had part time job when they were teenagers as is the case so common in Europe and the US. All of my in-laws are from Denpasar and not one of them works including my nieces and nephews who are only in their early 30's. They're also all uni educated. My brother and sister in law also haven't worked since their early 30's. My father in law retired at 44. This isn't unusual for people born and bred in Denpasar and Canggu. They fill in the days watching Korean movies, FB, attending ceremony and eating. There's a sizable local Balinese population in Denpasar, Canggu and even Ubud who are worth tens of millions of $US. Most of our friends in Bali also don't work and never have. They simply lease out land. Land that they either inherited from their parents. Long-term leasehold agreement to foreigners facilitate this. Alternatively they build villas and hotels so they can charge tourists and receive hard currency. COVIDs put a halt to this. A few years back we bought a small block of land in Ubud for about $200K USD. The owner a retired teacher subdivided a large block into smaller blocks call kavlings. He made over a million dollars from the sale. He gave the money to his sons who also don't work. With Indo wages and basic living expenses so low and land prices comparatively high there's zero incentive for them to do so. There's also not a strong culture that puts emphasis on kids making something of themselves independently. Even the kids of super rich in advanced economies are expected to work. Another problem is that experienced, well qualified professionals in Indonesia receive less than welfare recipients in western countries. Also kind, well intentioned foreigners donate time and money to assist the struggling Balinese, yet many assume that there isn't a local wealthy population of Balinese to do this. Although I personally know Christians in Bali that do, most Balinese Hindus would only give to the local temple and overindulged sons. All the best

Thanks for sharing about the rough period of ur life and for being kind. If we can put a smile just to 1 other person per day, that is good enough and we should strive for that. Regarding the crisis, it will be long drawn. There are pockets of hope. For example, SG and HK just announced a travel bubble today. Hope there will be more of such arrangements soon! Keep well Damien!

Thank you for sharing with us Damien. Most people who do vlogs ask for support as it costs money to do what you do, so you can ask too, as many of us appreciate what you are doing. You just have to watch how money is paid as KZbin and others take a percentage. I post money through Western Union to support a Bali family, all they had to do was send me a photo of their identity card which has all the info needed to set it up and send money. I don’t know how that works for you but certainly look into it. I loved this vlog, very sad seeing the streets I know so quiet. You are so kind helping that man with his child, he would have so appreciated your help 🙏🏽💓

I and many Aussies donate to Helping hands across the sands. Its run by Leon at Warung sports Sanur. They visit villages orphanages etc to donate food parcels znd do projects. Would love to see you apend a day filming with them. Might encourage more Bali lovers to get involved. Shows a different side than tourism. The daily struggles. Something different than empty tourist spots. Love your vlogs. Look forward to them.

Can relate to this video being a western guy dating a Balinese girl, constant trips and staying in Bali as long as possible but eventually we have to go back to our country and get more money. Yes things are much cheaper in Bali but when you have periods of no income and have to stretch what you have can be challenging. Still someone still young and optimistic like yourself if you can follow correct process perhaps you will have a good shot at business in Bali, obviously kitas/visa permitting. Thanks for the vids! It will all come together it always does.

Damian, it was an interesting video. Its really sad to see Balinese struggling during these times. I have Business in Bali and UK and understand the hardship faced. I am also a part of a Bali charitable organization called BALI CARING COMMUNITY balicaringcommunity.org/. This is to support the really poor and needy people in Bali. Probably one day you can contact them (give my reference as Robyn from UK) and they'll show you the work they are doing in Bali and how they support needy families. Maybe you can create a video vlog on how they are helping the community.

When are the locals going to repair those appalling and very dangerous footpaths given "nothing much is happening?" This dead time could be used to repair infrastructure. Land values in Ubud especially downtown Ubud are on par with many advanced developed western cities yet local infrastructure is seriously dilapidated.
