Let me give you a fun fact. Chernobyl’s RBMK 1000 graphite moderated reactor, about 2.5 yrs old, exploded at 1:23:45 AM. This is known as the night of the disaster; Chernobyl. The power plant in Ukraine was running a test for the flywheel effect of the turbines, and if they could work long enough, even if the reactor shut down, to then power the emergency diesel generators. These turbines were mainly run by steam. Steam was one of the contributors to this massive reaction. A second contributor was xenon gas. You see, xenon has is a string neutron poison. This poison is caused by the boron section of the control rods. The reactor was running at half power for most of the day, and the boron was half inserted, causing the reactor to be xenon poisoned. So when the control rods were immediately inserted by A-Z5 (SCRAM) it generated a quick power surge. This surge generated steam. The steam caused immense pressure, which then lifted the rods and fuel caps, each weighing 350 kg. Then, the unit building could hold no more. It exploded, and the reactor lid went flying, landing back on the same position sideways. Then, the superheated graphite and hydrogen created a second explosion, scattering lethal doses of radioactive particles. Respect to all those at Chernobyl who lost their lives while working. Hoping no nuclear fission disasters like Chernobyl and Fukushima ever happen again.
