We all do it: a hot new smartphone like the Galaxy S8 drops, and we're in love - until we see the price tag. Then we start thinking, "well, how bad would it be if I got last year's model instead?" The good news: the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge are still outstanding smartphones worthy of a long look, especially once they get discounted following the Galaxy S8 release. The better news: there are other, still-cheaper smartphones out there worth a look as well. The bad news: neither of these options will get you a Galaxy S8. Check out MrMobile's Galaxy S7 Review for 2017, and stay tuned for the Galaxy S8 review coming soon!

[ABOUT THE SAMSUNG GALAXY S7 REVIEW RE-DO]
MrMobile's Galaxy S7 Review 2017 was produced following ten months with a Galaxy S7 review device and five months with a Galaxy S7 edge review device, one a Galaxy S7 retail device purchased by Mobile Nations and the other a Galaxy S7 edge review device on loan from Samsung. The devices received several updates over the course of their lifetimes and were tested on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless in Greater Boston and beyond.

[CORRECTION] I'm getting reports that you can indeed launch the camera with a home-key double-click on the S8. This did *not* work on a few demo devices at the media briefing and I couldn't find any setting to enable it, but it's entirely possible I just missed it. Sorry if so!

I have an S7, having lots of problems, sent it to the factory 3 times! Bought it on release day....

I too purchased my S7 Edge on release. After a number of updates which have more than crippled its battery life (tried multiple cache wipe/factory reset after each update), and Samsung repair saying the battery is perfectly fine, I'm stuck with an S7 which barely lasts an 8hr working day. Epic phone in all other aspects. Bigger battery was my reason for purchase. Phone would usually last me 24-40 hrs for about 2 months after purchase, but then some stupid ass updates hit and this happened.

I don't think the S8 is that much of an update over S7 to justify such a price tag. It has been almost a year since I have had my S7 and it still looks as gorgeous as it did on day one and almost as good performance wise. I am also one of those weird people who is not a fan of the edge look. To me the normal S7 just looks way more sleek and beautiful. So yeah I will be sticking with the S7 for the foreseeable future! Great review as always!

Mr. Mobile I've stayed mobile... And again, I'm pleased to see this extremely relevant review as I have been waiting to see what the latter in entailed of its larger screen etc.. I find though visually it's stunning upgrade but camera and hardware is miniscule for the jump .. Knowing the camera software can probably be ported over I'm thinking of the unlocked s7 edge.. I'm already using note 5 but it's been unlocked from sprint and has a funny text mms issue while on WiFi at times but att straight talk is happy with it... I also still think s7 and note 5 cameras are so good that Samsung has only minimum upgraded software as to not break an already winning experience albeit not perfect.. Damn near.. I also have been playing with mate 9 I won... It is actually pretty damned amazing hardware as well.. Imagine that, Chinese coming to US with bang for buck? Anyway babbling aside.. Killer review my old buddy... You still hold the torch for my favorite reviewer and actor to be when needed Robert D Jr.. Lmao sorry had to...

Michael, do you prefer 4:3 over 16:9 in terms of camera aspect ratio?
@TheMrMobile
@TheMrMobile 7 жыл бұрын
Definitely not. I like 16:9. Problem is, to max out resolution you almost always need 4:3.
@fatproduce
@fatproduce 7 жыл бұрын
Whenever I take a photo, most of the time my first thought is, "Would this make a good desktop wallpaper?" So I tend to prefer 16:9 photos too. Do you usually crop after the fact or just take the image in 16:9 and lower resolution?
@Krystalmyth
@Krystalmyth 7 жыл бұрын
Take my shots in 4:3, Crop to 16:9. Make good use of that wiregrid to frame shots with cropping in mind to not lose details.
@TheMrMobile
@TheMrMobile 7 жыл бұрын
I've just gotten used to dealing with the 4:3 thing. See I'd prefer to shoot in 16:9 because it'd look better in the video reviews ... but shaving off that much rezzo just feels like shortchanging the phone.
@fatproduce

MrMobile [Michael Fisher] That does seem the proper route. The only advantage of shooting in 16:9 might be potentially saving on the file size?

Can everyone just stop saying the fingerprint being at the back is a bad thing? It has IRIS SCANNER and FACE RECOGNITION!! It does not require a fingerprint scanner at the front.
@TheMrMobile
@TheMrMobile 7 жыл бұрын
Face recognition won't work for Samsung Pay (which is good, because a Periscoper demonstrated that you can fool the damn face-unlock with someone's photo). So no, I'm not gonna stop saying the scanner is in a bad spot. Because it is.
@Kris_96
@Kris_96 7 жыл бұрын
MrMobile [Michael Fisher] When other phone manufacturers moved the fingerprint scanner to the back, everyone said its in a bad position, then people got use to it. I'm sure its going to be the same case here, and paying with your phone only happens that many times a day, unlocking it on the other hand happens a lot more. And yes, the facial recognition can be fooled, but no the iris scanner.
@TheMrMobile
@TheMrMobile 7 жыл бұрын
Fingerprint scanners on the back aren't the issue. Plenty of phones execute that just fine. The issue is creating an off-center sensor that's difficult to find by feel, and then putting it alongside the similarly-shaped camera lens -- the very last thing you want to smudge. Sorry you're tired of hearing it, but it's a bad design decision, dude.
@Kris_96
@Kris_96 7 жыл бұрын
I'm not saying it's good, my biggest problem with pretty much every video is that no one mentions the other three unlock options provided or at least says that it's hard for Samsung Pay, which by the way is only released in a very small amount of countries so for me it does not even apply.
@TheMrMobile
@TheMrMobile 7 жыл бұрын
Yep. Well FWIW, I mentioned that plenty in my hands-on. :) And hands-on videos are by their very nature incomplete rush-jobs, often full of errors (mine included). Wait for the full review if it's a true analysis you're looking for.

Yet here in mid 2020 the Samsung Galaxy S7 was the best Smartphone I ever had. I like a smaller display with a strong camera. Unfortunately after all those years the battery drains rather quickly on the S7. I'm using a Huawei P20 Pro for a year now and while the battery lasts up to two days and the camera is fairly good, I personally want to switch back to the S7 just because of its smaller size. Also I did not (to the last day I used the S7) notice any slowdowns.

The S7 remains my daily driver to this day. With the Galaxy Project custom ROM it remains quick and responsive, with excellent battery life and a camera that is still very good indeed. Phone cameras kind if reached a point with the S7 era that future cameras are only proving incremental increases and that if you really want better then buying an actual camera is a far better choice.

Another great video. The key statement there was "giving them what they want". The s7's camera, IMO, is brilliant, and as long as I am satisfied that's all that matters.

I upgraded to the S7 edge two weeks ago knowing full well the S8 was coming. For the $0 on-contract price it was a steal and I don't think I'm losing out on a whole lot by not waiting for the S8. Loving it so far!

as i am watching this video on the s7 edge its indeed one of the best phone i ever had. Love it and probably wont change it because for me changing phones every year is pointless. Great video.

That S8 is a gorgeous phone and to someone who hasn't traditionally liked Samsung like me, the most important change on it is the ability to finally swap the back and recents buttons to the CORRECT order. The switch to on-screen buttons is big for me. It's what's kept this android-lover away from Samsung for so long.... I may have to check this one out and to answer the question asked in your excellent video, I couldn't live with the S7. It would have to be the S8 for me.

Watching this on my S4 I think that this is a good phone even now. It's inexpensive, has 1080p screen (which is awesome), 16MP camera and 2GB of RAM (enough to open a few apps at once). Overall I really like this phone, mainly because of the screen, headphone jack and overall performance. And again - this phone is so cheap. Considering the S7 as a next daily driver! Good job MrMobile!

One of my uncles has the Galaxy S7 for about a year now and he still loves it. He switched from Apple and has no regrets. My brother is deciding on getting a new not too expensive phone (he currently has a Moto G). Sounds like the S7 is right for him!

A year later and I have my S7 in perfect condition! It still fast and beautiful! I decided to go with the exynos variant and it was a great decisions! I'm gonna keep this baby until it decides to give up on me. Something that help me to keep it fast is that every 6 month I do a complete factory reset and keeping all my apps in the ad card

Hey Fisher! I bought the Yotaphone 2, you had replied to one of my comments and gave me a link to your video review when you were at Pocketnow. I just want to say its an amazing phone to have even in 2017, and its also good to see Yota pushing updates OTA, I just need to make the jump from the HongKong OS to the European or Russian OS to get the updates :D So thanks for that awesome review :D

Oh you still have that green Nokia charger you bought and reviewed 2-3 years ago! ☺ I have that too coupled with my Galaxy S4 and S5, it is still a very cool gadget today that I feel like it looks more futuristic than the Samsung one. Unfortunately Microsoft is no longer selling it a long time ago because they've stopped pushing premium and stylish flagships for a long time. I guess we should keep them as they may be very valuable on eBay after a few years!
