I'm really glad to see this old tech being preserved, especially by someone younger than myself! Good on you!

I used to look after a couple of UAX12s back in the 1960s. The GPO had ceased providing courses on them by then so I had to learn from the older engineers about them. I remember the switches being very heavy to take out. One of them was in a mobile caravan that was provided to temporally replace the exchange at Farley near Salisbury that had burnt down. Later an SAX (Small Automatic Exchange) was provided to replace the mobile UAX12. I think the one in the museum is a B unit rather than the slightly larger A unit and has been modified. I remember adjusting the vibrating relays that gave the ringing and tones...they were always a problem.

I love the telephone videos! I was a telecom tech for 30 years in the US and it's fascinating to see telecom equipment from other countries. Keep them coming! I'm just amazed at how you figure out how this "ancient" technology works! This system reminds me of a Stromberg Carlson 100 line X-Y system that I once worked on. 00 through 99 were the extensions but it didn't have access to the outside world.

damn my father had an entire uax12 to run his old business' internal phone system. when the business was sold he sold it to a guy and that was like 40 years ago. however couple years ago he contacted my father and gave it back to him. bit awkward really cuz we have no where to put itso it just lives in the corridor inside the front door. its older than this though being from the 1930s.

Glad your keeping the old tech alive and running ... worked on some of it in the past, but sadly removed / stripped out even more of it to be replaced by what then was deemed to be state of the art ... and what long since also has been superseded etc. Will definitely visit the museum for sure 👍

I love the Strowger switch system! I think the mechanical complexity is so fascinating. Working with a mechanical exchange means you need to really understand how a call needs to be routed. I think you're going to have a lot of fun with your new acquisition/toy!

Yes remember seeing the grey cans at Gt Yarmouth (Norfolk) disused exchange years ago. Very rare. I've fitted those power units on House Exchange System 4 2+10's. Great video enjoyed it very much.

The reason you can't use 1 is so you can't ask the operator to connect you (100) With modern systems you can stop certain numbers callin0 or 1, but allow the boss or his secretary to do so, not sure if that's true on your unit.

You night not have thought of this but this exchange looks a bit close to the racks on the side. If at all possible you should make sure there is ample space for wheelchairs so the museum can remain accessible for more people.

Heres a wierd fact alot exchanges had closed network which was housed in a separate cabinet with an 1/5 inch conduit " snorkel " coming out the top .It was designed apparently for if the exchanged was damaged this system would still work.
