Unfortunately I have a crooked collarbone thats higher on one side than the other. A result of a previous crash on the street. (I never got it plated for some reason, I’m not sure why cause I should have) Anyway the point is that I have a neck brace and it just doesn’t fit right, cause it rests on the bump in my collarbone.

I didn't have boots when I first got my bike and I was riding trails and tried to change direction onto another trail. I did not have enough momentum to get up and over the little hill between the trails. I was not moving but I could not react the ground at that point and by the time I could reach the ground I could no longer stop the falling of the bike. She is a big Ktm 690 (sorry I don't ride motocross lol) Anyway the back handle on the bike went down the back of my leg. I thought I was fine, a little sore but good. Rode all day. I had 3 nights where sleep was difficult and my leg was purple from mid calf to heel. This went away and there was a large scab area and the pain was gone. I continued riding for 2 months and no problem. Then one day I noticed that the scab was looking really bad and I got it looked at and treated daily. With in a week I was in the hospital wondering if I would lose my leg or worse! I found out that the injury had caused the skin and stuff to pull away from the blood supply which resulted in necrotizing fasciitis. (Flesh eating disease) to set in. Hospital for 3 days and another week of intravenous antibiotics daily. All in all from injury to a healed massive scar on my leg it was over 6 months of open wound. I wasn't even moving at the time of the injury and if I had proper boots it would never have happened. WEAR ALL THE GEAR, ALL THE TIME!!

well I hope you are healed up and all good now, that sounded like a horrible experience to go through, also great advice, I once took my Harley for a quick ride around the block and had a kangaroo bounce out in front of me and I ended up super manning over the handlebars, luckily at only doing 60km/h but unluckily I was only in jeans, t-shirt, and sandshoes nothing else no helmet no boots, it was the last time I be that stupid when riding

Back in the day when I drove motocross in Finland, it was required on all tracks to use every single safety gear you listed, and also elbow protection and a kidney belt. Also the neck protector saved my life once when I hit a bad jump and the bike started tilting forwards in the air. I fell staight onto my head and it would have probably broken if it wasn’t for the neck protector

Everytime I fall (which is alot) I am glad I spent the money to be outfitted properly. Father's who have young kids starting out need to make sure their kids wear *all* of their pads *and* boots. And set an example and wear your gear too. No matter how hot it is, wear it for them. Also buy your kids hockey shoulder pads. You can find them for less than half the price of the dirt bike brands. My sons pads have D30 in them and they were only $25. The Fox ones are $40.

I started riding in 74 at the age of 10. Helmet, jeans, shirt and tennis shoes. My Dad told me to wear my hiking boot, but what did he know? Not many Dads rode back then, till we grew up. But a beer truck driver told me he used to race TT races, and I should wear some boots. I was good for about 10 years, noting but bumps and scrapes. Then I raced MX for 10 years and got banged up a bit more, (riding gear then). But as far as hospital work, that only happened twice. Broken arm and a broke foot that I let heal by itself, (in between jobs, no insurance.) It still works good. Today, it is not the injury as much as it is finding a good Doctor who knows the best thing to do. They often mess things up today, and things often get worse. Government run healthcare, and kids who think they know it all,---at your service.

With regard to chest/back protection, it's worth making the distinction between the basic, plastic "roost deflector" and actual CE armor that is rated for impact protection (level II, preferably). If you can afford it, get the latter (but as always, anything is better than nothing). I wear a Leatt mesh jacket that has CE Protection for the chest, back, shoulders and elbows. The stretchy mesh keeps the armor where it's needed. It also has a slot in the back that a Leatt neck brace will slide into...that way pressure from the neck brace is distributed across the back protector and that'll *hopefully* prevent the back injury you suffered (sorry, BTW). It's all about building a coherent system that distributes forces over as wide an area as possible, and vectors them in ways that avoid or minimize injury. For instance, MX boots will protect your foot and ankle from impacts or bending in ways they shouldn't, but the force is then going to go to your knee which is only designed to bend in one direction. Knee braces help ensure that happens, and transfer forces to your hip which *can* rotate. I wear separate knee pads (with straps) even on the street. Yeah, my ADV pants have them built-in, but they're just sort of "floating" and I have no confidence they'd actually be where I need them in the event of a crash.

Great video, however, Neck Brace...NOT controversial to me. 4 days ago had a 45 mph crash on hard-pack logging road between trails. Brace save my neck and my helmet took a serious digger. Not one stress related muscle strain or stiff neck. 1st crash with the brace and now I will never take it off when riding! It was that good!
Priorities in safety gear (most to least important imo): 1. Helmet (Shoei) 2. Boots (Sidi Crossfire) 3. Goggles (Airbrake) 4. Kneebraces (Ortema) 5. Spine protection (Leatt 3df Airfir) 6. Chest protection (leatt 3df airfit) That's all the safety gear i wear besides pants jersey gloves and underwear of course. The particular stuff I'm wearing is the best stuff on the market for racing, at least imo. I don't wear a Neckbrace, ellbow guards and padded underpants, eventho i used to wear all that when i was a beginner. I'm riding regularly and since I'm riding this gear I didn't have any injuries any more, eventho before, when i was wearing more gear, i got injured regularly (this is probably not correlated to another since i also became a much better and safer rider).
@simon26255 жыл бұрын
999racing well a neck brace is proven to help with spinal injuries which are the worst that can happen. And a thin Leatt airfit won’t protect your spine either. Back and chestprotectors are classified and a lot of these roost protectors don’t even meet level1
@999racing5 жыл бұрын
@@simon2625 if you would've done your research you would know that the 3df airfit is rated as level 1 chest and back protector and therefore better than for example the Fox ones most people use or alpinestars a1 just as an example. It's not a level 2 but it's the best compromise between safety and comfort. And as the video told you Neckbraces are very controversial and there is no study or anything with any statistical value on wether they help you or not, so it's completely up to personal choice. I was wearing one and it was restricting me, i fell and smacked it into my neck bruising it for a week (without NB nothing would've happened). Examples like the one in the video, or Marvin Musquins brother who got paralyzed if not by than at least whilst wearing a leatt neck brace just make me believe that they do more damage than good. In addition to that there is also some other arguments for me against neckbraces, which is why i choose not to ride with one and obviously believe that it's the best choice. If friends ask me for advise on wether they should wear one or not, i tell them these exact arguments and that that's the reason i choose not to ride with one any more. But i also tell them that there are other people that believe otherwise and that it's the riders choice and that I'm not telling anyone to ride with or without a neck brace. It's your responsibility because you're the one that eventually ends up in a wheelchair, and i don't wanna hear sth like "but you told me to ride with/without one". Choose for yourself and live with the consequences. And if you want a safe hobby probably consider golf? Lol

The braces are for hyperextensions. but what if you fall? You automatically straighten your palms to catch yourself. However, the braces limit the movement in hyperextension, so in this example you would break your fingers rather than your wrist. Do you understand what I mean ?

Being able to feel the foot controls is safety too. In fact, I have learned that not letting people tell me what my biggest factor is, is usually safer too. I reject the baby sitter! :)

Snell HJC helmet on sale, Tech 1's, 100% Accuri's Fox chest, knee, elbow armour, Shot pants etc. - decent to get going but didn't break the bank - all-in for around $500 new. I do have a neck brace that was expensive ($350) but had that already. For sure, wear the right stuff - hospitals are more expensive then gear. I wear all the gear mentioned in this video except the neck brace. I wear calf socks, briefs and then spandex compression pants, a t-shirt, then put all the gear on top. Sure it might be a little warmer than skipping some of that but it helps with any rubbing of gear and does keep some of the sweat out of the gear. The compression pants are a natural carry-over for me from wearing them under leathers for drag racing where they help the leathers slide over the knees as the legs come up to the pegs. Even wearing leathers on the street the compression pants are nice. I'm gonna check out the knee braces since my right knee isn't that great anymore. Thanks for the heads-up on that.

I’ve gone back to knee pads from braces and feel a lot more comfortable but my knees ache at times when I get a leg ripped up dabbing. I probably just need better, more comfortable knee braces. I’ve seen to many people wearing neck braces get really hurt in what should be a simple tuck and roll fall to believe in them. 🤷🏻♂️ Helmets are also so big on kids in proportion to their bodies that they look so restricted with a neck brace thrown into the mix. I believe that comfort and the ability to move freely forms part of safety and shouldn’t be overlooked.

Helmet, boots, and jeans or riding pants are essential. Everything else just buy as you go or as you injure certain parts of your body honestly. Especially if you’re low on funds as a beginner. Definitely wear pants though lol I looped out wearing shorts on my nephew’s 110 and got my leg caught between back fender and tire. Deep ass road rash style injury on the back of my leg took me over a month to get healed up. Needless to say I never ride in shorts now even if I’m just messing around in the yard.

Do you have to wear elbow pads. If so do hockey elbow pads work?

If you don’t ride extreme or are taking big jumps, going for time, etc. you don’t need all the gear. If you ride super hard off roading than you should have lot’s of protection but if it’s easier/slower riding with less hazards than all the equipment is not necessary. Mostly if you have a helmet, some good boots of some kind, and some clothes to not get scratched and burned, its mostly fine.

i mean.. it's up to you. it's best to wear the proper gear. i have some easy trails behind my house and i just put on my boots, chest protector, helmet, goggles and gloves. next thing i know i hit a rock and it threw me off the bike and i skidded on my knee for 20ft. it's been 2 months since the crash and my knee is still kinda messed up. and i tore my fingernail off during the crash. hurt like a son of a bitch. hit my head and got a minor concussion, and when i sat up.. i thought my knee was broken. then a week and a half later i but on my riding pants and knee pads, boots, gloves, chest protector, goggles, and helmet thinking i would be fine with just that. i have a little uphill double in my trails and hit it next thing i know i fly over the bars. did a superman onto my belly and slid 10 feet. scrapped my arms all up, now have scars, and scrapped my belly up from when my t- shirt flew up. also hit my head again pretty hard. anymore i learned to wear all my gear. boots, pants, knee pads, shirt, elbow pads, gloves, goggles, helmet, chest protector, and neck brace.

I would still strongly recommend to wear all of the gear you can. You can get very very hurt even going slow.
I'm new to this channel so I haven't seen as much videos, but could you make a video a wheelie video and a jumping video for smaller bikes like Honda 100 (that's my bike). I've been wanting to start riding dirtbikes with family on big trails, but they require jumping and going over stuff that requires wheelies and I don't know how to do that.. if you already have these videos, don't worry about it, I'm sure they will appear lol, but if not thank you in advance, love your channel guys! Stay safe!
