Thank you so much, I always wanted to use the valve index controllers, but didn't wanna buy the headset itself. I use the quest for pcvr only anyway and now I can enjoy the higher resolution, with superior tracking, which is other than the limited ipd options, the only thing I didn't really like about the quest 2. Don't get me wrong, it's amazing that I don't have to set up any kind of base stations to play VR, but full body tracking and now valve controllers will definetly make the quest 2 feel like a high end headset, which it kinda will be, because of the added cost of the added costs. It's amazing that you can upgrade the quest 2 like this.

Great explanation, but you’re telling people to change the wrong file. Default is just that: the defaults that SHOULD always be set with a fresh steamVR installation. That file will be overwritten every time steamvr updates. Instead add the mentioned lines to steamvr.vrsettings under the “steamvr” section, default location is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\config

so random thought..... the valve index controllers are base station tracked without an external tracker meaning the tracker is built in. Personally, I don't see it as big of an upgrade as you do, since I don't really see the benefit of having hand tracking behind my back. As in, I can't think of many circumstances where I would be in VR and need to put my hands behind my back. The only circumstance I can think of, is in Skyrim when pulling out a sword from behind my back, or arrows, but that works just fine since it's not like I need to put my hand fully behind my back to do it. So what is the actual benefit then? How would it help my VR experience? Plus keep in mind how expensive everything would cost. When you start buying base stations and trackers after buying a quest 2, you are going to start getting into the price range where you should have just purchased an Index instead. Right?

VTOL VR and loosing tracking on the controllers comes to mind right off the bat. This is an upgrade path, as opposed to just buying an index as soon as you've got the budget and chucking the Quest in the bin. And VRIK for me in skyrim does have some tracking issues, though you can work around it.
@SilvyReacts2 жыл бұрын
@@DFX2KX How do you lose tracking in VTOL (I never played it)? Based on how it looks, wouldn't your hands always be in front of you? As for VRIK having tracking issues, they can usually be solved by fiddling around with the settings and increasing the activation range. I suppose you also need to be careful not to put your hand entirely behind your back when grabbing things, like a dagger or shield.
@DFX2KX2 жыл бұрын
@@SilvyReacts looking over your shoulder for missiles can (and in my case, DOES and at the worst moments) take one hand out of the field of view for the headset. in VRIK I have activation range maxed as well. I have to tilt my head at a funny angle to grab my bow. it's rather annoying. my understanding is that tracking can suffer for all sorts of random lighting-related issues. and one of them seems to be biting me.
@SilvyReacts2 жыл бұрын
@@DFX2KX Huh, I see. I guess I can see how that could be an issue. So guess it depends on the game and circumstances. I suppose maybe it would be a good idea for them to include sensors in the back for future headsets, though the only way I can see that being feasible is if it's integrated into the head strap or I wonder if it would be possible to just make it an attachment that plugs into the headset's usb-c port.

So quest 2 headset 300$, base stations for 300$ Index controllers for 280$, Audio strap for quest 2 around 100$, and possible Link cable for 80$ plus whatever those trackers cost ya. Cool experiment for people who already own some of these components though. For PC VR ive used both headsets and the clarity of the Index and Quest 2 seem to be about the same due to the quest 2's compression but with a lower FOV. The stand alone experience is really cool on the quest and i love bringing it to friends houses for beat saber and other games so no diss on that device. Just letting people who are unaware know if you only want PCVR its better to look elsewhere unless you are cool with a few compromises. The Index is an older device but still a very good one with great clarity in motion due to the frame rate while also not being incredibly hard to run cause the resolution is lower. The oculus touch controllers are great as well if you want to have a fun experience. for 300 dollars as opposed to 1000.
