Then and Now- New Art Playlist. Watch me recreate my older sketches in real time.

Welcome to my new playlist! I had this idea on my walk this morning (after finding an older sketchbook) to re-create the sketches from a few years ago using the styles and materials that I am using and enjoying right now to see what (if anything) has changed.
This is the first one and I am blown away by how different they are. Almost don't recognise the older ones anymore!

I haven't yet mastered watercolors, but have been so drawn to gouache that I ordered a few tubes to try. We shall see how that goes! Love the idea of this series- I find it so helpful and inspiring to see other artists' journeys.

Gouache is such a close relative of watercolour. It is sort of a natural progression in a lot of ways. Good luck and have fun! I am so pleased that you are enjoying the journey with me! Deb xx

I’ve only been painting with watercolor for a year, so don’t really have much to compare yet in terms of my style changing, but I’m enjoying the journey and looking forward to playing more with mixed media.

Aesthetically your paintings are so pleasing, that this couldn't be only your own style :D If I wanted to learn from you, it would be because, I would think that this is exactly the style I had been looking for years, then this would be my style, too, since even then if I tried to do exectly as you, it would be impossible, since there always remain some tiny nuances that would make my style similar to yours, but not exectly the same. For example, I love oil pastels and definitely I'dd add oil pastels here and there, instead of pencils, I love Faber-Castell PITT (India ink) double ended markers, and I'd use them here and there. Instead of gouache underpainting, I might use oil pastel or oil stick layer spread with odorless mineral spirit. Fantastic is what you are doing, anyhow.

Lol, art wise I seem to have multiple personalities!! Good point, well made. It gives me a bit of respect for people who can copy a paitning exactly. It must take real discipline to stop your own 'voice' from becoming apparent in the work. D xx

Which gouache did you use in the sky ? You said indigo possibly with a bit of black but I just love that green toned blue sky

Thanks! It was Indigo (I am sorry- I think that I might have said it inside my head. Was so sure that I had). But definitely Indigo and there is some black it there from previous mixes. The main aim is for a really dark but not a flat blue. Deb xx

I'm curious about the brushes that you're using, particularly the dome blender. What brand are they?

They are DecoArt (US) and wonderful brushes. The Dome Blender is so useful and I love the scrubby effects that I can get with it. D xx
