It’s a big day on project 58 as Lockgate are installing my new Refleks Diesel Stove.

I know there is a romanticism about having a multi-fuel burning stove on a narrowboat and is often the choice of new live aboarders but these diesel stoves are superiour in just about every way. None of the mess or filthy dust you get from wood/coal. Not having to empty it every day. Way better temperature control. None of that juggling of too hot too cold. No time wasted lighting it or worrying about it going out. Keeping it fueled is less hassle. Maintenance is much easier. It's just super convenient. For me, convenience wins every time. Nice job James I'm sure you are going to love it. A stove like this would be my choice also.

I remember being on danish fishing boats in the mid to late 70s and they had these stoves back then…they are just indestructible and reliable in all weather, we use to have a big kettle on the go constantly so we could have a cuppa as and when….😊😊😊

I've lived with a log burner for the last twenty years or so and wouldn't change it, but I see the appeal of one of these diesel stoves for sure and it's very smart I must say. In an ideal world you'd have one of each I suppose. Between watching your renovations and now the installer chaps, I have learned what brand of power tools to buy from now on, they should make you a brand ambassador in my opinion. Nice one mate.

Thats a beautiful install James, the view of it from all the angles are spot on. I really like the line of the flue against the window frame which would look really annoying if it was wrong, but thats dead-on. Very impressive and a real addition to the boat.

Hi James, great video, very informative and interesting, the stove looks fab👌. I'm guessing that you did a lot of research into the pros and cons of stoves... Have you chosen diesel over multi fuel because of the lowering running costs, or ease of use, or both. I'm wondering, because I don't have any experience of either, but as a rough guide, how much would it cost to run per hour/day. Cheers, all the best with your project 👍 kev

Glad you enjoyed it. There’s not much research to be done to realise that it’s much cheaper to run than coal. Free logs is the cheapest but not easy. This works out at 5lts per day in peak running which is around a fiver a day. If I was running coal that would be half a bag a day which is near £10 a day plus the other stuff which needs to be burnt. This burner also has a back boiler so I get far better economies than a multi fuel stove. That’s on paper - I haven’t got it up and running but should along those lines.

You will be "Toasty Warm"! A friend has one of these on his 60' share boat, with 2 inches of snow on the roof setting 1 (probably 2 on your newer controller) was more than enough. Enjoy your new stove - you will love it!

Yes it has a back boiler so it will feed 2 rads up the end of the boat and the calorifier under my bed

It’s a 4.2KW output mate and is the one with back boiler feeding the rads and calorofier. If it heats as good as it looks then I’m onto a real winner

Can the Reflecks be run automatically from a timeswitch or programmer, or does it always require a manual start up?

It requires manual lighting however once she’s running, the burner can be turned right down to a trickle and the stove stays on throughout winter
