Hello! I really enjoy your reviews, but.. there is an aspect that bothers me a bit. This is just my personal perspective on it, I hope it's taken the right way. I think its fair criticism. I feel like there's an important element often overlooked - the deeper context behind the music, particularly the themes and messages conveyed through lyrics. For instance, in this case and in the Halsey review, we're dealing with artists who bare their souls about deeply personal struggles. Poppy here is incredibly sincere and straight forword, uncharacteristically so, candidly discussing her tendency towards conflict and negativity, along with its emotional toll; Halsey shared her experience facing life-threatening illness. I saw very little emphasis or attention to these themes (other than the atmosphere the music brings as a whole). I feel like video music critics tend to focus heavily on public aspects - chart performance, public image, marketing - while missing the artistic substance. A comprehensive music review could explore how successfully artists convey their intended messages and emotions through both music AND lyrics. Albums exist to convey ideas, and adressing lyrics only when they either suck or are outstanding is ignoring the intention behind the art. Art criticism is at its best when it delves beyond surface-level observations... and for that to happen you gotta explore into the lyrics, so we get more than whether a critic liked the vibes the music/lyrics are giving. Again, I really like your reviews - this is just something I personally find interesting and would love to see more of in music criticism in general
@chayo45378 күн бұрын
I agree. Lyrics and the stories behind them are very important. I'm not one of those people who ONLY cares about production and could careless about the world building in regards to the lyricism. I want the whole thing. And poppy delivers that

@Dohregard10 күн бұрын
I Disagree will forever be my favorite of her albums and I disagree that it wasn't a valid metal album. The metal scene needs more shoe horn, SOAD and Mr Bungle and bands like that are what is missing from the modern scene and Poppy could have filled that niche.
@SquishTheNinja7 күн бұрын
While thats a pretty cohesive review, I disagree with a few points. It's weird to say "its been a long time since she made the type of youtube content she was once known for" when she *just* released her webseries 'Improbably Poppy' a couple of weeks before Negative Spaces came out, which is basically Poppy's old youtube style but with a bigger budget. I also wouldn't say that she is completely moving into only the metal space now, with her pop based Improbably Poppy e.p. coming out next year and like you mentioned, her last album was dark pop / fashion electronica. I *love* Poppy's metal stuff, and I love 'I Disagree', 'Eat' and 'Negative Spaces', but one of the best things about Poppy as an artist is the way she unapologetically moves through different genres and puts her spin on them, often incorporating multiple genres. Calling her just a metal artist, while I am glad she is being accepted into the metal space, I feel diminishes who she is as an artist. Also, this is personal opinion but Vital, Negative Spaces and Halo are some of my favourite tracks on the record.

It’s been such a fun ride with Poppy. I’ve been a fan of her music for about 4 years now and I’ve loved so much of her work because it is authentically her behind that microphone. She demonstrates a true artistry from her fashion, her videos, her song writing, and her choice of collaborators. She’s willing to put herself wholeheartedly in a genre of music that that has been historically harsh, obnoxiously snobby, and disrespectful of women who dare enter their headphones. It takes guts to go out there again, and again, and again - and she still kicks ass. I’m loving this album - it’s on repeat. But again, I’ve loved so much of her work because it’s just good effing music.

The album has really grown on me the more I’ve listened to it. I agree the album definitely has some low points or tracks that feel unnecessary but the album as a whole is solid. Having two more synth focused tracks over some of the weaker songs would have taken it to the next level for me. I’ve always appreciated how she would blend different styles so I don’t think she should lose touch with that element.

The album feels like a nice companion to I Disagree. Blunt, full of teeth and also blending pop elements with metal. I wasn’t so hot on her last record to this makes up for it. But I feel she does releases too often since Disagree. 2020 was Disagree, its deluxe reissue, a Christmas EP, an All The Things She Said cover and one of those Music To Do XYZ To albums. 2021 was the Eat NXT EP, a spare single and Flux. 2022 was the Stagger EP. 2023 was the Kittie Spit cover and Zig. This year has the Bad Omens and Knocked Loose collabs and this album. A lot of it good, but the material has appeared too often somewhat.

building on popsarg's comment, i've read that it's because she basically doesn't take breaks. most artists would take the opportunity to turn off their music brain during promo and tour for their album, but she starts work on her next project while promo is ongoing. if she feels that's her natural rhythm and isn't working herself to death, then fair enough! having a lot of variety and a couple of stinkers here and there isn't such a bad thing if you're still making two good albums at the rate some artists can make one.

@@posteveryside-beatsnewslmaooo not everyone is a metal fan. Im more of a pop poppy fan but Scary Mask is still top 5 for me

I do agree about a few tracks sounding a bit more generic and repetitive but I think each on their own is a good song and it’s just the fact that they’re in the album together. The production is still some of the best I’ve heard from her in a while and overall I think the album is incredible; no skip album for me

Fantastic album. We love poppy!

solid 9/10 - Halo was great and a beautiful closer to this very varied, yet also focused album. but what about Crystalised? Track sounds like a synth banger to which a group of K-pop dancers to Rockette dance to - so weird but also epically catchy! More of this experimentation is needed for the rock and metal genre, and I'm here for this! Lets go Poppy!

i definitely agree that some of the songs are too similar and a bit repetitive but i still love this album. most of the tracks are easy to listen and even dance to but theres a few kickers that are heavier and headbang-worthy. as a long time fan and HUGE enjoyer of the EAT ep im so glad poppy decided to go in this route with her music again🧘🧘🧘

5:15 god damn you hit the nail on the head with that one lol. I’m a huge Spiritbox and Silent Planet fan, didn’t know much about Poppy until this album and I’m vibing with it pretty hard

With how you were rating the singles, i wasn't expecting a decent score, so I'm pleasantly surprised with the 7. I loved this album.

Ive enjoyed ALOT of new music this year. But this was the first album i listened to and was genuinely surprised at how good it was. No filler at all. Crystallised is one of my fave songs of the year instantly

Having Halo in least favorite is heartless. That shit put me to tears

Apparently Anthony doesn't get "sad girl" lyrics... Which is pretty much every track. How misogynistic of him!

Halo is a fantastic closer and one of the best tunes on the record. Different strokes, and all that!

One thing I wish you touched upon is how mature Poppy’s delivery is on the album compared to previous releases. I have felt at times in the past the instrumentals carried some of her songs and that her voice merely complemented the songs…not on here. Her singing and delivery drives every song and I think she and this album deserve credit for that improvement.

Also I think the review is pretty fair but it’s an 8/10 minimum also vital is a banger idc…I get the point on nothing being a little redundant tho

Good point, her screaming has gotten really good now too

Honestly this album came out at a great time as I was pretty dissatisfied with the new Linkin Park album but still wanted something with heavy yet melodic tunes, and Poppy delivered.

Fuuck, didn't know she was working with Jordan on this album. Makes alot more sense now with the atmospheric samples and breakdowns, love it!

As a child of the nu metal era and growing up on Iowa from slipknot and early bring me the horizon albums, this record tickled such a sweet spot for me.

I was surprised at the dig against "vital". It actually turned out to be my favorite song on the album.

Sorry Anthony, but Vital fucks hard. Arguably the best one on the record.

I didn't expect this album to make my personal top 10 list for 2024, but here we are. I think it's her best work to date.

Considering this came out the same time as linkin parks comeback album, it handley outshined it & is infinitely more replayable.

I feel like this album handles nostalgia with great measure of ideas that are moving forward Unlike Linkin Park's which sounds like not only it's stuck in the past, but also sounds like a fucked up caricature of it made by basically less committed people. Won't be surprised if this new iteration of the band will not last long.
