Thank you for your encouragement Tim! Minimalism for me is to live simply. It is not about austerity or self deprivation. We can be minimalists in one area of life and not another. I can have an empty garage, and a full art gallery wall. There can be pillows all over my bed, and just the basics in the bathroom. We can be flexible in our creativity, and in our spaces, and in our lives.

We are currently moving my elderly mother from her home into an apartment. When deciding what she will take to the smaller space she had a moment of shame that she acquired so many things over the years. I reminded her that those things served her well for the time that she needed them. There’s no shame in admitting she no longer needs many of those things in this stage of her life. She seemed to need to hear that it is okay to let the things go that no longer contribute to her life as it is now. All of the advice you gave in this video is good advice. Thank you!

I’ve been on a minimalist journey for the last 5 years. It started when I just got tired of all the stuff and it was everywhere. I could enjoy the stuff I loved because I had a bunch of stuff mixed in with it. For example, I love music and I have a small collection of albums, CD’s etc. but I could not access any of it due to the magazines that were stacked in front of the music. As you stated, I started small…I went through the magazines and was honest with myself that I was never going to read them cover to cover. I tossed them. I also stopped the subscriptions I had. It was the baby steps that got me going. I ended up boxing a bunch of stuff up (only tossing the trash) and after boxing up 85% of my belongings, I went through one box at a time. Some nights I only did one box, while other nights I went through 4-5 boxes. I ended up getting rid of 45% of my stuff because I realized I no longer wanted it. I then moved into my forever home, got rid of more, and while unpacking, even more stuff went. I am not a minimalist in anyway but I am no longer a maximalist…I still have stuff (music & books) but I no longer have 6 blankets for my bed when 2 will do. I no longer have a cupboard full of mismatch dishes. Gave them all away and bought a matching set for four. It has made life so much easier. And yes, I am grateful for all that I have.

Sometimes I pay a small feel to upgrade seat location in the plane, but not always. Upgrading my flight to Italy in November from Main Cabin to Business Class would cost me over $4,000. However, when I check in, I might find that I can upgrade to Comfort+ for a couple hundred $$. I would probably do that since my ticket is essentially free.

@@TheNewRetiredMe An example of being kind to yourself?
@jennywren893711 ай бұрын
When I declutter I never consider whether I'm being kind to myself. For me, it's a question of do I or don't I want this item, a simple and practical decision.
@TheNewRetiredMe11 ай бұрын
@@jennywren8937 I understand your question. It doesn’t sound like it is a bother to you to discard sentimental items, or even hesitate when the decision is made. Others, sometimes me sometimes not, do best ourselves up over the inability to get rid of something we know we should. Guilt creeps in. We agonize for days. Sometimes longer. The phrase “be kind to yourself” as I used it here is simply to try to remind yourself you have no reason for guilt. If it isn’t your time to discard an item, accept that. Leave it. Come back to it later. But the guilt isn’t helpful. It’s only harmful.
@jennywren893711 ай бұрын
@@TheNewRetiredMe Thanks for the explanation. Having nursed all family members I am now caring for my husband, nearly 80 years old and suffering chronic health issues. Dealing with the belongings of all those in my past has been a lifelong task alongside working, sometimes more than 18 hrs a day, 7 days a week. When my mum passed in her 103rd year I had so wanted life to be the same that I left her coat in the closet 10 years, only deciding last year that it was time I sorted out in case the situation changed and my husband would be left and unable to deal with it. I am deeply sentimental, hence a life of caring and nursing for my loved ones, their small gifts a happy reminder of days past. Passing on their items recently to a young lady who runs a little shop is giving me great pleasure. Perhaps I am fortunate that I felt no guilt in either enjoying or giving away. Dealing with life has been something I've had to cultivate, telling myself when I think I can't, "But you must because there is no choice. Choose the best option available and get on with it". Best wishes for your channel.

I retired a little over 4 years ago and for the first year I was seriously decluttering our house and helping my mom declutter. I have still decluttered more during the last 3 years as well in both places and still have more to declutter. It is a journey not a destination for sure. I have found myself decluttering the same areas a few times because I didn't declutter enough the first time or two. You build your decluttering muscles over time is a very true statement. I just took a trunk load of stuff from my house last week and am starting another "donate pile". That doesn't include things that went in the trash. I am not trying to become a minimalist but just trying to significantly decrease the amount of stuff we have in our home. We don't really buy much stuff it's just what we have already collected over the years. We don't even have a paid Amazon account. I only order items from there about 4 or 5 times per year and if I get $35 worth of stuff, I get free shipping. Our kids will have to declutter our stuff if we don't do it unfortunately.

I have decluttered a few times in my lifetime, As a teacher and principal, and then a kitchen gadget person to and essentials only person. My family has followed suit, except my husband who has three outbuildings and a garage. My younger family members have been helpful, I kept what I considered essential for clothing items and they got to come and pick and choose what they wanted for themselves. They always liked my choice of clothing. This happened after I made a list of what o wanted to keep in each room of my house, they quickly removed everything that wasn’t on my lists. They took what they wanted and the rest were set on tables in the driveway. We then had a potluck in the house while the community had at all the free stuff in the driveway. I used Facebook to offer anything free in the driveway with exception of the five tables! People were shocked I would give away crystal, China etc. It was such a good weekend. I will do this again one more time this summer and will then consider myself an essentialist

I agree with you. Minimalism for each person is different. It’s not based on how many socks you have or how little you spend on this or that. It’s a personal choice to consciously live with less. For some people it’s just the clutter they can’t take for others it’s the idea that consumerism and consumption is taking over. But if you tell people that you are a minimalist or you live simply, they automatically put you in a box that they have predefined. I always tell people that it’s a journey, and not a destination so kudos to you. And I tell people, you do you. And you said it perfectly when you said do what brings you joy.

My brain hurts now. You keep making me think...and yes, it hurts. My motivation to relieve myself of unused possessions is simple, but there are complications to making that a reality and only I can solve those, or not. I've come to the realization that every dream I have (and being a consummate dreamer, I have many), has a lifespan. My current dream of fewer possessions is more about having 'curated possessions,' than it is about just having fewer of them. I'm confident I can make this dream happen for myself...little by little. I have learnt something very interesting about myself. Whilst I have always loved the cottage vibe that has a lot of ‘clutter’ and very much a lived in look, I can’t live with it. Everything shouts at me and I feel very unsettled. I am a lot calmer with less things around me so I keep my favourites and let go of the rest. The people who shame others for having stuff are the ones who have a problem. No big deal keeping tidy here, I get a bin bag, nip round the cupboards and dump anything which looks past its usefulness, all done in 15 minutes. Making hard work of a simple process is making a mountain out of a molehill. For me, living a life without colour, artistry and appreciation of craftsmanship on all levels, would be one not worth living. Motivation and sense of purpose are easy, all I have to do is get out of the chair. I live every day as if it were may last, using everything I have to the full, before I check out thoroughly used up.❤😊

I will probably never be a minimalist person. My home is my castle and my comfort zone. Men, I feel are minimalist at heart. What do you think a person needs mostly in this life? I grew up doing without. Trust me, it was not fun. So now I buy what I want and what I need. I’ve worked 50 years, began at 14 years old, and intend to enjoy myself with whatever I want to buy. I want to add also, I only buy what I will use of course. But with cosmetics and shampoos. It’s always a test. lol. Right now, no travel for me. My three dogs, require a lot of attention. Two have health issues and can’t be boarded. It’s fine, as I hate vehicle traveling. Fly me anywhere and I’m happy. You are fortunate to be able to just take off. Your mom seems to be independent and healthy. So you better get traveling before it’s too late to do it!!!!

In my journey I experience reducing my earthly materials in my home much the same as my health journey. Lucky for me I am by nature a person who chooses paths that have led away from black and white thinking. I discovered as a young lady the area of gray thinking forcing me to think about all sides of things - logically and realistically. It is a much more difficult path yet more meaningful. My last frontiers in my 60's now has landed me into healthier diet, exercise, self care and lots of trips to donate excess stuff as I journey on. Lighter body, lighter eating, lighter stuff and a sense of humor feels much better than living in excess weighed down. As an artist, I create from so many sources. This takes a bunch of stuff, but, I have only so much room to play in. That makes most of my decisions for me. I am keeping it simple. 😊 Reading livingsimpletosimplylive's comment is where I have settled on as well. I like your logic, Tim. I am a deep thinker. It is easy to overthink our journeys. Sometimes we must let go to go forward. Extremes don't work for me. What I eat and what I keep both go hand in hand. It can be a struggle. And it can be fun. I am taking life lightly in so many ways. Glad to see some other folks are on this journey, too.

Another good message. As I go through drawers and closets I find things that I forgot about. I make a point of using it or wearing it. Things that are only slightly small I put in a box because I am actively trying to lose weight. I realized as I aged that pastels and certain colors no longer look good on me so they get donated. I have dresses with back zippers that I no longer wear because I have no one to help me zip it up. They go. Shirts and sweaters where the arms are too long or hang funny over my shoulders go. Where I have duplicates that I don't need, those things are donated. Household goods that I no longer use I sell, donate, or see if my family wants them. It is a process and I have made a game of it this year. I have a lot of left over inventory from a business that I ran for 35 years that I need to get rid of as well. I have to sell, donate, or trash at least 10 items everyday and I keep track on a spread sheet. So far I am well on my way to meet my final goal.

I have a room that I converted and call my office (son’s old bedroom). It also holds miscellaneous stuff. I finally finished the closet. The top shelf holds most of my husband’s books. The closet rod holds my dressy clothes and work outfits from too small to wear to current size. I was surprised when I organized it taking some from my bedroom closet and some from containers. Hopefully, eventually I will fit into some of these clothes. Why do I keep these clothes? Answer because I hate to shop and I’ll have something to wear when I lose weight. It works for me. On the floor on the right is a few pieces of luggage taken from the bedroom closet. In the middle two empty containers to use as I continue decluttering. On the far left, pictures in frames that I want to keep, but not necessarily hanging on any wall throughout the house. I am so happy the way it turned out. My next project, a tall four shelf bookcase with photo books, magazines, and DVDs or VCR tapes and a lot of other odds and ends. Can’t wait to tackle this.

My goal is for everything to have a home, and to ultimately be IN that home! Following in my mother's footsteps, I buy things to make my life more convenient, but I never designate a home for said item. I know I have it but I can't find it when I need it, so I buy another one. So on and so on. My life since retirement has been to go through closets and cupboards and just gather all like items together. Once I've got them all, then I can divest myself of the excess, find a home for it and be confident I'll know where it is when I need it. I've found a lot of unnecessary items this way and gotten rid of them. I don't regret the chaotic life I used to have...I enjoy the new life I am creating for myself. 😊

I have an ongoing to do list of projects and I wrote a note to myself on it last week that says, remember to take time for rest - if I don’t get everything done now, it’s OK. I remind myself that I have been painting the inside of my entire house for the past year. It’s not getting done in a rush, but I’m taking my time and not fretting over it. I am currently working on my next to last room and I’ve saved a lot of money in labor.

About once a week I like to carry a plastic bag around to my junk drawers, yes I have several, and toss out what's become useless. I'm trying to apply minimalism to my overactive thoughts, distractions, to do list, anxieties, and social media time. I've heard of Marie Taikwondo, but I don't ask "does this outfit bring me joy?" but rather "does this outfit bring me dates?" Haha, I kid.

Whew! Thanks for reminding me to give myself grace! It is a journey to purge but I don't want my children to have to deal with it when the time comes for me. I remind myself every time of "why I am doing this" and it keeps me going to the next project. Thank you Tim for the awesome wise and helpful words!!

I love your clothes closet decluttering method. Smart idea. I don’t have many clothes so my closet has turned into an art supply closet. Any suggestions on how to declutter that? With art supplies, I’m heavy into the “I might want to use it some day” mentality. For example, I had a leather tooling kit gifted to me Christmas 2022. I still haven’t used it but I know I’ll want to. But there are a myriad other items I will probably never use. I need to let go.

One of the things we did when going through our art supplies and similar things was to figure out how hard would it be to buy it again if needed versus storing it and (most likely) forgetting we had it. The leather tooling kit would be a hard decision as I know those are not a dime a dozen. And I went through our supplies again last week and realized we hadn’t used any of it since the last time we decluttered that area so most of it went.

I think a big part of the problem is that we are bombarded with advertising that says, buy this or that, and you will be happy, smiling, and joyous...ALL THE TIME! Our whole economic system is based on buying STUFF. A great business to go into these days is self-storage units. Millions of people are paying for stuff and then paying to store stuff that they will never use. I have been giving considerable thought to this and I think the word minimalism might be the wrong word to use. To me, minimalism almost sounds negative to start with. Why not maximalism? The focus of maximalism, however, is to put maximum focus on living life to the max...and eliminating any "roadblocks" that allow a person to really enjoy life to the fullest. You said in this video that minimalism is a journey...not a destination. I agree. But, what is the destination? I am one who believes that having too much stuff in the house is a roadblock to the destination. For me, that means various hobbies that I enjoy. Live life with purpose and, live life to the maximum... and eliminate roadblocks and/or excuses to do so.

When we get to heaven, I’m going to be your neighbor. I’m about 75% complete- with my decluttering. It’s taken about six months. Things are so calm here and cleaning takes about two hours per week. You found your new purpose / destiny‼️

I imagine moving into a smaller apartment and asking myself what I would take with me. I sometimes daydream about moving out of the country, and which item I would take. 😮 answer: there’s very little I would bring with me.

Tim, so agree with you. Every person has their own needs, preferences and season of life. My life as part of a retired, married couple is much different than our children's and grandchildren's lives. But I hope that everyone takes a hard look at what they are doing in terms of how it impacts others.
