Dr. Sondhi: congratulations your book. I must confess my comments are based on listening to your interview as opposed to reading your book. I am in the process of making amends by getting a Kindle copy right away. I do have a couple of points as a response. Full disclosure: I have been a former Indian army officer and had the privilege of serving in a combat arm in one of the oldest regiments. I have also had the luxury of time and perspective to look at this issue from the distance of time and space - I bid farewell to arms over two decades back and lived 15 of the these 20 years outside India. The contempt of Nehru for the British Indian Army is something I wasn’t aware - if for nothing else - I need to buy your book for the bibliography of the research! While the political establishment was perhaps right to create a bureaucratic buffer between the executive through the defence minister, If we were to continue to have a buffer. I believe the country would be better served with a degree of specialisation of the IAS / IFS cadre - just focussing on CCS affairs perhaps -defence / foreign affairs / finance / internal security. You simply cannot have a generalist bureaucrat overseeing implementation of rural development and next day pitchfork him into an oversight role as a defence secretary. I believe the current structure has seriously stymied the strategic mindset and growth of the Indian military leadership. And that is to the detriment of India’s security. If you do get an opportunity to visit and experience the life of officers and soldiers (and I use the term generically for air / naval warriors). Especially accompanying the remains of a fallen soldier to his family - it is the most excruciating of emotions. Why soldiers fight is better explained by far more eloquent soldiers who have seen far more combat than I have. The reason I mention this to perhaps provide a counterpoint to the element of ‘politicisation’ which came up in the podcast. Soldiers across the world have always been the most conservative elements of the society - they are the defenders of societal values - flawed or otherwise. Even to the point of death. If the soldiers (and by extension officers) gravitate towards a political dispensation that is that is espousing these values. The Indian military was perhaps the last bastion of colonial value system - and synthesising the values to our own is not necessarily flawed. Happy to connect offline should you read this comment. Best regards

I can confirm Nehru's antipathy towards the Army as Dad confirms it. He joined JSW/ NDA in 1954, was commissioned into the Air Force in 1957. My Dad's course mate, my maternal uncle Mama, died in 1962 conflict. He was in 2/8Gurkhas. Suggest read books on 1962 to understand Nehru and his hatred

Question to both - Why did your ancestors leave West and East Pakistan? 2. How could the British occupation army's native branch have taken part in the INC "freedom struggle" when the INC had absolved itself of all recourse to violence after it had supported the British occupation Govt in its WW 1 military efforts?What signals should this army have read? Btw, when did the INC invoke Native troop Nationalism against the British occupation Govt? When Bose attempted this, Nehru threatened to pick up a rifle and fight against Bose's "invasion" of Bharat.

On the one hand Nehru and other Congress leaders supported Netaji, supported INA after their arrests in 1944-6 but after 1947, thanks to UK legacy, both India and Pakistan did not include it in their armies, now author mentioned Mukti bhani too. but question is when govt praised such armed groups in post independence politics than who is using that avatar? its not as simple, had our generals, civil officers, judges etc disband their medals &legacy things must be different. it is also important how to reinterpret resistance movement so it must not promote lawlessness, all is missing

Issue is not the army intervention in politics only, more pertinent issue is intervention of all non elected elite including civil bureaucracy, secret agencies, judges, and big businessmen.... all have reservations regarding parliamentary democracy

The agniveer scheme is fraught because of another reason. Research shows that in areas with high military recruitment, post partition violence was more than in areas with low recruitment. Agniveer scheme will regularly funnel army recruits back to civilian society, potentially militarizing sectarian conflicts.

What a load of bullshit. So you're saying there were post partition riots in what is now Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh?
@kauilya314
@kauilya314 16 күн бұрын
@@pkpb8133 the increase in recruitment from UP, Uttarakhand and HP was a conscious post independence choice in India. Btw the link between demobbed soldiers and Partition violence is based on solid research not opinion. Do look it up.

Incorrect Assumption. The reason is GANDHI and NOAKHALI. The Pakistan expirement was led from Bengal, Bengal had a Muslim CM, and riots in Noakhali & Kolkata started in 1946, even before Punjab. Gandhi fasted till death, till the riots in Noakhali riots were cooled off. So Bengalis knew what the future held (unlike the Punjabis). Dad was a barely a teenager in 1946, and he remembers my Grand Father taking the decision to migrate out, after Noakhali. He also remembers that the Boatmen of the family, who were Muslims become riotious after Noakhali. Dad is from Dhaka. My mother is from Noakhali, and my maternal Grandmother is a legend as she helped her younger brother fire off a few shots to keep the Muslim rioters at bay. She was from a Zamindar family. Gandhi is not liked in Bengal as he prevented riots to break out in Bengal in Independence, he spend his time in 1947 here in Bengal. So being ex military has nothing to do with the crimes of partition, the Punjabis just were not aware of the impact of Partition, also the riots in Pakistan emerged in the Villages of Rawalpindi (my wife's family is from there), where the Hindu's were less, all because the Muslim League was instigating the fires. Indian Punjab was a reaction.
