@@robw8173 Rob, I am a baptist preacher. And the truth is because of the situation on the show it was very cult like. It reminded me of the Jim Jones Massacre where he got people to take poison. This was a great series because as those people were duped into doing it and then began to change and attack one another it was absolutely shocking. One of the great things this series did was you liked these people and felt bad for them. I will say they all died bravely singing as they were incinerated by the sun. That is except for Bev.

As an Austrian Catholic, this is the first church song I remember singing. It was first printed in its original German version in Vienna - incidentally, this was in 1776, when the United States came into being. We sing it over here at the end of every larger celebration. And indeed, we sang it in the early morning hours while crossing the border into Ukraine from Poland with a delegation of Austrian bishops visiting the war-torn country. Good Lord, the emotions. Thank you for this version.

I haven't seen MIDNIGHT MASS because I don't subscribe to Netflix. Being a Pensioner, I don't have the income to subscribe to .... everything. Besides with so many choices and channels - I don't think there are enough hours in the day to watch any more than 10% of everything that there is! I would hate to have to subscribe to; say Netflix, just to watch one drama a week, in this case MIDNIGHT MASS. I read somewhere that the production team will not sanction the series on DVD. Why? Though, I live in hope that they will change that.

Holy God, we praise thy name; Lord of all, we bow before thee; all on earth thy scepter claim; all in heaven above adore thee. Infinite thy vast domain; everlasting is thy reign. Hark the loud celestial hymn angel choirs above are raising; cherubim and seraphim, in unceasing chorus praising, fill the heavens with sweet accord: Holy, holy, holy Lord. Lo! the apostolic train joins thy sacred name to hallow; prophets swell the loud refrain, and the white-robed martyrs follow. And from morn to set of sun, through the church the song goes on. Holy Father, Holy Son, Holy Spirit: three we name thee, though in essence only one; undivided God we claim thee, and adoring bend the knee while we own the mystery. Thou art King of glory, Christ: Son of God, yet born of Mary; For us sinners sacrificed, And to death a tributary: First to break the bars of death, Thou has opened Heaven to faith. Therefore do we pray Thee, Lord: Help Thy servants whom, redeeming By Thy precious blood out-poured, Thou hast saved from Satan’s scheming. Give to them eternal rest In the glory of the blest. Spare Thy people, Lord, we pray, By a thousand snares surrounded: Keep us without sin today, Never let us be confounded. Lo, I put my trust in Thee; Never, Lord, abandon me.

The plain singing style that the choir utilized for the soundtrack was a perfect representation of a devout rural Catholic congregation. Not plain song but also not overly polished, all of the hymns follow the same format, from two part harmony to fully realized four part choral settings. It’s brilliant writing and mirrors the action on the screen perfectly.

Many children have suffered at the hands of many different groups of people. Should we condemn them all? Men have abused children: do we condemn all men? Same with women. Same with the Jewish, same with the Muslims. If an atheist abuses a child, does that mean all atheists abuse children? How about this. This is a reflection of the entire series. There are 7 verses (episodes). Each verse builds as more and more people come to the church. The first 2 verses have a refrain(as if to stress a message). The 3rd through the 5th verse have no refrain because a miracle has already taken place in episode 2 (no need to stress the message anymore, the people are coming). The 6th verse brings the organ in because we're almost home. It also has a refrain to once again reinforce the message to keep people on track (and not be afraid). The 7th and final verse/episode is the most full because now the whole town is involved (whether they want to be or not). It also has a refrain/coda because in the end they all put their trust in "the lord" and pray they won't be abandoned in this most important time.

We just sang this beautiful hymn at Mass today -- I sing in the choir at the traditional Latin Mass, and it was the closing hymn. I was wondering what recordings of it were out there and I found this. Though I never heard of this series I am so happy people are getting to know "Holy God, We Praise Thy Name" -- it goes back at least to the 1700s when it appeared in a German Catholic hymn book. A great, great song -- it rates up there with "Hail, Holy Queen Enthroned Above" as the kind of anthem you can really raise the roof with, which we did this morning. So happy everyone is listening to this. May the Divine Assistance remain always with us and may God bless us all!

If you are a very devout Catholic, then you might not want to watch the show. It is about an isolated community that takes their religion so seriously that fanaticism takes over with dire consequences. I'm an ex-Catholic, so I wasn't bothered by it.
@oscarchavezavellan2738
@oscarchavezavellan2738 Жыл бұрын
@@VineVitumEt5t's not about anti-religion though. The show shows strength in believing, what it's actually against is blind fanatism and twisting your beliefs to fit whatever benefits you and makes you feel better. It's an actual nuanced and respectful revision on religion and beliefs. There are a lot of moments where the character's beliefs are an actual strength that can do good, like when the girl forgives the guy who paralyzes her or the ending itself where it's shown how accepting something inevitable with grace is a virtue and that virtue and strength can be given by god. "God give us the serenity to accept the thing we cannot change, the courage to change the things we can and the wisdom to know the difference" is a prominent quote that the show uses.
@Bumbley1
@Bumbley1 7 ай бұрын
@@oscarchavezavellan2738 **SPOILERS** Also the show quite effectively warns against false teachings. In Christianity that the priest and his "angel" could grant eternal life. There is already a "new and everlasting covenant" that grants eternal life, that through Christ in his eternal kingdom. The mistake of the priest, and the parishioners to an extent, was that they valued "my will be done" over God's will and were led astray. It went along quite well with descriptions of the anti-christ. Per the Catechism (CCC 675), "Before Christ’s second coming the Church must pass through a final trial that will shake the faith of many believers. The persecution that accompanies her pilgrimage on earth will unveil the “mystery of iniquity” in the form of a religious deception offering men an apparent solution to their problems at the price of apostasy from the truth. The supreme religious deception is that of the Antichrist, a pseudo-messianism by which man glorifies himself in place of God and of his Messiah come in the flesh."

I was really taken back when I heard this arrangement in that episode; Just a profoundly beautiful choral arrangement that builds so organically. I'm mesmerized by the inner voice movements the most as they really draw out that emotion in those chords (like the F/A especially or whenever the top voice/melody is hanging on a note and the inner voice moves down, etc.) The arrangement is just so well written and the vocalists did a terrific job with this, especially in getting a more contemporary/bright sound instead of a warmer classical sound with soft r's and the rest (not a vocalist so don't really know how to explain haha). As the song builds into the second half, the organ fade in felt so natural and then became incredibly captivating in supporting the vocalists. it also sounds like you took some of the vocal tracks, duplicated them, and nudged them over to get that kind of slightly delayed/live room kind of sound? Just great work! Really can't say enough good things about this arrangement!

This is the most unbelievably beautiful thing I’ve ever heard. It makes my soul feel like it’s swelling to the bursting point. The image of the townsfolk’s procession through the streets singing this hymn was just so compelling in a way that I can’t explain. Faith can be such a heart wrenching thing. I was reading about the origin of this particular hymn and was not surprised to find it’s German, and during world war II there was an additional verse added praising adolf hitler. Which to me is just another illustration of mass subscription to horror handed down from an institution that people trust. Societies are truly bizarre when you really consider them. The show is a work of art, one which evoked many long forgotten feeling and occurrences in my own life. It was a cathartic watch.

@@marykunzgoldman1276 (from Wikipedia ) The hymn became also part of military hymnbooks where it was considered as a song of thanksgiving. Okay. So I've lost count over how many times I've rewatched this show. and this is all my thoughts: Just the whole set of moments with this hymn. It has the typical beauty and ambiance of an Easter service considering the resurrection being a big deal in Christian belief, very clearly. But, with this show perfectly capturing elements of religious trauma and blind faith, and you know exactly what's going to happen next. Then the camera pans to Fr Paul walking up front and the facial expressions with his hands in prayer gave me so much curiosity over what was on his mind at the time before confessing to the congregation. Oof! Just beautiful and terrifying at the same time. Way to go Flanagan and Newton Bros. over this shit!

I'm completly atheist but i find this very beautiful. Thanks to our brains and billions or years of evolution, all humans are able to appreciate music. I'm happy to enjoy this moment, and i'm even happier to know that millions or other people do, even if they disagree with me, in the name of their god, of just, in the name of good music.

It's a bit too complex to write down in chord form what makes it sound so distinctive, but it revolves around F major, Csus4, Bb major, D minor, and various inversions of those chords. Through the hymn the lowest voice line often starts with a descending scale from the root note of the chord.

This is such a glorious and beyond beautiful version of Holy God We Praise Thy Name. Midnight Mass was horrid and a disgusting show. Pitiful how Hollywood has marred the name of such a beautiful grace and tradition of the Church. Sticks and stones right? God is truly mysterious and a brilliant prodigy, using this to get this spectacular epic angelic music and his word out to all of us!!!

I loved that scene. It feels so much more grim as well on a second viewing, knowing what is to come... I am not religious in the slightest, but I honestly get why people love to sing these sings together, as praise to whom they believe in. Beautiful, beyond words.

@@scholaroftheworldalternatehist Uhm, no. Falsehoods galore with you. I have had scares and had plenty loved ones go through old age without growing religious. You either are indoctrinated/find faith yourself, or you look at it all and realize you just don't believe in it. And then there are agnostics, obviously. Saying we are all inherently religious is moronic, at best.
