Wonderfully filmed and presented. I’ve seen MANY videos and none have come close to explaining so well how to apply plaster. The video flowed well, the angles were very helpful, and I understand everything. Well done, and thank you!

@@TheNitoProject I found small rocks are ok. I have a big super hard brick of about 30 lbs I made. It is 10 to 12 inches X 14 or 15 inches X 4 inches thick. I just shoveled three or four shovels of soil on my Arizona mountain property and added some cut dried long mountain grass and water and small sand like rocks from the top of one of the Any mounds and it turned out super sticky. It would not fall off my hand upside down when trying to shake it off. Right away, I said, this is the kind of stuff I need to build my 20X 30 cabin to stay warm in.. I think I would like to do a combination of Adobe bricks, Strawbale and Cob. Make roof real strong and put metal on roof with wood box frames on top of metal, then add Strawbales and another layer of sheet metal. I am not sure how it goes on the roof. I need to Google the video I partially seen.. want to make a super Cheep mountain retreat for anytime during the spring, summer, fall, winter as well.. Something that a couple people can build in a short time from May to October. Add windows, two doors and 8 feet of porch & awning all around cabin. Part of porch can be a screened in porch to stay away from summer mosquitos and June bugs while pickin banjo and sipping iced sweet tea. 😊😊

I come from a real mud plaster user community, my original old house was all mud plaster. Clay is ok. We use finer sand which is almost silty, and no straws at this stage. The fine straw comes from cow dung, maybe around 1/4 is cowdung in the mix. The finish is like cement. And then lime wash.

in Bali we have a lot of straw from the rice harvest and there are good clay soils here also, but I am wondering if clay plaster walls can be used in a tropical environment? I watched the video on japanese style polished clay walls and wondering if using linseed oil with a straw clay plaster will withstand the high humidity...or maybe just for interior wall finishing??? just a interesting sidebar, my old farm house in North Carolina had a sand finish plaster with what appears to be horse hair or perhaps pig bristle as North Carolina has always been a large pig producer
@VenturiLife5 жыл бұрын
I don't think clay will hold up well externally in a tropical climate unless you paint over it and maintain that. Rammed earth would work. Internal walls away from water would be ok.

How important is the sand in the mixture? You've explained that the straw is used to prevent cracking as it dries, but what about the sand? Does it act as an aggregate to add strength? Does it help control clay shrinkage?
@2icelollys1goat5 жыл бұрын
You're exactly right. The straw provides tensile strength; the sand compressive strength. The type of sand used should be sharp - essentially composed of different particle sizes. This just helps everything (clay, straw and sand) bind and bond, better, together.

Where do u get the straw from and can we use black soil instead of clay because where i live the natural type of soil is desert soil , plz help i want to make dorodango!!!!!!!
@TheNitoProject5 жыл бұрын
I got Straw from the straw bales, but you could use grass or some other fibrous thing, all soil contains clay it's good to start playing around with it, that will get you a long ways, also you might be able to buy pure clay at a hardware store near you if you wanted to add some of that to your soil, the truth of it is that there's a lot of questions here to answer. I will have another dorodango video in about a month, anyways hope you best of luck.

I think I have said many times how amazing you guys are. I have a question? My plaster that looks similar to the above dusts a little to the touch. What could be the reason? I will probably linseed oil it at the end to stop dusting but still I wander why it dusts as is as you say above that it should be dust free. Thank you for your time.

Loved the video. Can I cut about 2 feet of drywall from bottom, fill it with cob and do the wall the way you did it in my townhome? ( Basically The bottom floor is flooded during Ida ( 550-650 SqFt area ), I saw some mold at the back of the kitchen cabinetry and some other areas, though i applied vinegar + baking soda solution to get rid of the mold, I was told I should cut the drywall, let it dry and redo it to prevent mold and possibly unhealthy air. Is the cob doable for this whole project? Thanks for all the input

Great job! How do you avoid cracks in the plaster? What is the secret? :)
@itzakpoelzig330 Жыл бұрын
I'm not an expert by any means, so feel free to correct me, but I believe cracking means either 1) you need more sand in the mixture, or 2) it dried out too quickly, in which case maybe make sure you wet the surface you're putting it on, do it on a cooler/more humid day, or use a shade awning over the worksite. Those are my best guesses, after watching about a million earthen building videos.
