Why Thorfinn went back after looking at the bird is kind of linked to this quote: "I always wonder why birds choose to stay in the same place when they can fly anywhere on the earth, then I ask myself the same question." So the idea is Thorfinn wanted to be there.

Askeladd raised Thorfinn and made him into more of a man than ppl give him credit for. It wasn't all just teaching fighting skills. I think in Thorfinn's pleading for them to run away or for Askeladd to survive, there was more than just a disappointment of not killing Askeladd himself. He not only lost his self prescribed reason for being, but also yes, a father figure. I think they do sprinkle enough hints of this for what the anime covers, but (SPOILER territory) the manga STRONGLY reinforces that Thorfinn thought of Askeladd as a second father in later chapters.

In the dying shot of Askladd where Thorfinn is holding him, the backgound is faded out in a white background. That's literally the same shot as when Thors was dying standing in Episode 4. Also, did people not see how sad Thorfinn was at Chad-ladd's death? Of course, there was hatred and anger and all the other emotions, but there was also profound sadness that Thorfinn was feeling. Not to mention that Thorfinn finally drops his blade, literally and figuratively, upon Ladd's death. And Chad-ladd didn't give him any lessons???? Come'on Marketa - that entire last monologue telling Thorfinn to not be stuck at such a damn boring place, going beyond where Thors went, describing Thorfinn's real fight, and telling him to become a true warrior (like Thors and Canute) - if this is not fatherly, then I don't know what is. To me Marketa is looking it at it through a very narrow lens not fully being open to the complexities of human nature. Life, relationships, love, is not so simple to be yes or no. Askeladd was definitely a father figure whether Thorfinn wanted it or not. If you look at all the other vikings though they're clearly better adjusted towards the lifestyle than Thorfinn cause his situation was uniquely traumatic. Most of the other vikings at least probably still had their family to go home to after battle, didn't start as young as six (even Askeladd was like double Thorfinn's age when he killed his first person), didn't literally have to live with their father's killer and develop a messed up father-son relationship with them, etc. etc. Idk why people even try to argue "it's the same as everyone else" cause that kinda does a disservice to the quality of the writing. Thorfinn is clearly written as a uniquely traumatized individual and it's really beautifully written into the character, but just denying that he has any reason to have trauma completely ignores all of that.

First lesson was from episode 10 which he explained and gave Thorfinn some historical and philosophical lessons. Second was from ep 22 when Askeladd told Thorfinn about his backstory and how he can use that advise to kill someone Third and final is in this episode Ofc, Thorfinn is just not in the right mind to listen to Askeladd lessons

Market will never let go of her black and white moral mentality. Every villain can die in a ditch and stuff like that.

the part that got me was like him letting the blade go was so important in also letting go of his hate but like his hand was almost reaching out for Askeladd

Damn after reading the manga those shots at the end with those three characters hit so different. Especially the beach scene, since that got me in the feels when reading, let alone seeing it animated

Just an FYI, a sequel/second season has not been confirmed. The director announced that they can’t say anything if there will be a second season because the studio ran into many problems this year (probably COVID and how the studio has a lot of other projects lined up right now). HOPEFULLY it does end up happening, but seeing how the studio is working on other projects right now, a sequel would probably come out in 2021/2022.

Thorfinn loses two fathers in ten years and now that he has strength he immediately try’s to avenge his father this show is excellent he went there to save his dad and that’s why askeladd stopped him so he wouldn’t be blamed for killing the king

I completely forgot Wit studio had to handle this mammoth of a series alongside Great Pretender no wonder they had to hand the rights to AoT over to MAPPA who were the only studio willing to take it on

Now that you're up to date with Viland and we still have a few weeks before the second half of season 6 of 'Vikings' is released, would you guys please please please please PLEASE consider watching the Norwegian Netflix show 'Rangarok' - only 6 episodes, been enough of a success for season 2 to be confirmed, and is available both in English dubbing or with English subtitles.

Askeladd wasn't a father for Thorfinn, that's true. He was a mentor. Without his influence, Thorfinn wouldn't have become the young man he is - for better or worse. And at the end, Askeladd did regret what he did to Thorfinn. That's why he dropped the dueling charade, why he cut the boy loose to do what he wanted, and when Thorfinn still came back, he said the words he did. "In the future, after I die, how do you plan to live your life, Thorfinn? You haven't thought about it, right? Move forward already. Don't stay stuck in a damn boring place like this forever."

21:40 Askelad did not kill thors. His men did. Go rewatch that episode knowing what you know about him now and how he reacted and you will understand his position there. He even joked about having thors take command of his troup.

Askeladd was more of a mentor than a father.. I think that the death scenes of both Thors and Askeladd visually marks the end of a chapter in Thorfinns life. Lost innocence when Thors died and now he lost his "raison d'être" with Askeladd dying. Give us next season already!
