SKAM deserves its critical acclaim because the audience is given time to know who these characters are beyond superficiality and preconceived media-driven notions of what a teenager is. It is the standard to which all teen dramas should be held, especially in the US. Too many times have I seen shows focused on “teenagers” that are portrayed by adult actors in their 20-30s, and situations therein elevated to levels of ridiculousness that all the characters should either be dead or imprisoned. SKAM feels true and natural to the teenage experience in a way that American television has yet to grasp.

Yea and I think that's why it's hit such a chord with international audiences, critics and also TV execs as kind of an 'oh' moment. I always find the weakest parts of the remakes that I've seen are where they stray slightly too far from the grounded and usually very real feeling of the original. And that thing with older actors playing the roles is very much why I didn't quite click with Italia as much as the other remakes.

the massacre guy you talked about, he's in prison for the rest of his life, it's just that you cant sentence more than 21 years at a time. They make a big deal about prison not being about revenge, but just removing people who are threats to society away from society. And 21 years is the maximum before they have to reevaluate if he is still a threat, and he's guaranteed still a threat, as long as he's living, he will never see another human that's not getting paid for being in his presence.

Btw season 3 is the shortest in Skam and if a part of me wishes we had more because it was so good, I also think that's one of the reason why it's so perfect: I loved season 2 for example, but it was the longest both because it had more episodes and because the episodes themselves were longer, so there were moments where it felt kinda dragged (especially towards the end with all that police thing). Here it's just...every single scene has a point (even the ones where at first you don't see it, rewatching after you know everything there's always a meaning. This is also the season with the most symbolism, there's always something new to discover by rewatching or simply reading other people comments. I truly enjoyed your reactions (Path a bit less, Imma be honest, but that's mostly because he seemed bored and annoyed most of the time so yeah lol), thank you! And now onto season 4!
@fredrike90695 жыл бұрын
I disagree with you that S3 has the "most symbolism". While S3 has the most obvious - impossible-to-overlook - metaphors and allusions. S2 and S4's symbolism is more subtle and obscure, but just as extensive and deep.
@AttackOfTheBees5 жыл бұрын
Totally agree, the reason why it's easily one of the single best seasons of TV I've ever seen (and could so easily translate to being a great movie) is because of that singular focus. The other seasons do balance out the story among the other characters more for better and for worse, but it does inevitably lead to stuff that didn't need to be there in order to serve that. I did quite like how the French version tried to rebalance it a bit to make its season 3 feel more integrated with the others, but I'm so glad this season exists exactly as it is, almost a kind of stand alone side season.
@AttackOfTheBees5 жыл бұрын
@@fredrike9069 What examples of 'subtle and obscure' symbolism are you thinking of in terms of being as extensive? You're right S3 is definitely aiming to be obvious with it in certain instances, especially with the Romeo and Juliet stuff it's trying to set up and subvert, but I don't remember anything coming as close to being as extensive and deep as the meaning and importance of that; the subversion of the trope, using the most famous of tragic romances, all while keeping it grounded ... it was just genius.

In case you didn’t know, the episodes of Skam was shot very very close to the release dates of the clips. Because the clips had to seem real time, they had to be in the right season and with the right references (stuff that perhaps only norwegians understand but when the character make references to current events). The social media and the group chats online made that seem all the more real, because if something big happened in real life, the characters would sometimes comment on it.

While you're right that a lot of the remakes are pretty close to the og storyline, there are a lot of interesting changes too. About the remakes I watched almost all of them and I suggest you check out Skam Italia (in Rome) and Druck (in Berlin). - *Italia* has the best Jonas and boysquad hands down -the boysquad is even better than the OG, it helps that they did the Evak season as the second one, so we meet them all sooner. Every single time a remake is airing and an Isak character get mistreated by his friends all the fandoms calls for Giovanni Garau the superior Jonas, every single time lol Italians tend to be more open than norwegians and I think this is clear in the friendships, they feel a lot warmer and natural, even more phisical. They show a looot of the culture of the country, the cinematography is on a whole other level even compared with OG (also it's in Rome, the places and the shots are just stunning, the symbolism with italian Evak and the fricking Vatican in the background in season 2 are ...wow). Probably the only Skam where parents exist, we see Isak's mom and their relationship is heartbreaking and very well done. I think they also have the best William, definetely better than the OG, a lot more charming and less of an asshole even with that same bad boy vibe -like, here the reason for the "bottle scene" is that he was defending the Isak character from a homophobic assault, we stan. And he's the one singing to Nora in the iconic scene and not the other way around like OG and that's one of the best clips in the Skam universe. - *Druck* is amazing as well and especially in their Evak season they changed quite a lot, I think no one can reach Italia boysquad but this is the only other remake where I like Jonas and they have the best Sana hands down, she's a sweet cutie pie that can kick your ass. It helps that I'm weak for german language! It's also very diversive with the cast and has many amazing POC characters, maybe the most diversive cast up there with NL (NL has POC Nora and she's a goddess, my favorite Nora so far.) I really suggest you check this remake out as well, I wasn't a fan of their season 1 but 2 and 3 are very good and different from OG, especially the Evak season. I also have the biggest crush on their Nora, an actual queen. But to be fair I have the biggest crush on every single Nora from every single remake so I'm biased lol P.S. Skam France also has a very good season 3, france Evak are maybe the most popular out of all the remakes and I really like them too, but I'm gonna be honest, I can't see any of the normies sitting through the entire first two seasons of this remake because they're an exact copy of the OG almost word for word, so yeah...unless you just skip those two and only watch the third? lol They'll have an original season 5 and 6 tho which is amazing!!

Good thing to say! they went from minute by minute to day by day because Even was slowly getting more himself. You can see it at the way he smiled and could have a conversation :) I love that you started to love the guy group more and more that is exactly what they meant in my opinion. Isak felt lost and not part of anything and at the end he felt part of them again :) You get that also with the conversation with Eva, he felt like it was a fake life. I love that he did say sorry for what he did in season 1 :) And I love the sneaky look from Even and Sana about that they already know each other :)

If you ever consider watching the skam remakes (not even react wise but like in your personal time) I recommend the German one, DRUCK, the most, because it's changed up things a lot and in general is just great. In my opinion they did the best job by far, I even prefer it over the original. It's so good I can't put it in words. Especially their third season but even more importantly their fourth season. Their fourth season is like ten times as good as the ogs or any other fourth season for that matter. Druck is just *mwah* chefs kiss 💋 Beside that skam NL (Netherlands) is good too but got cancelled after season two sadly, it's so well shot and cinematic. Skam Espanas third season has a lesbian couple, the acting isn't amazing but I still like the season for the cute moments. WTFock (skam Belgium) I've only watched the third season of but this far they're doing a good job. Personally I don't like any of the other remakes but those I've enjoyed at least partly.

thanks for your reaction, guys, i can't wait for you to react to sana's season. i love watching people fall in love with this show. i was really opposed to the remakes at first 'cause i thought it was dumb to redo the same storyline over and over, but i decided to check out skam españa and changed my mind. they change enough things around so you're never sure what's coming next, even though you know the framing of the story. even the characters are different. like chris has a season, but chris is isak. i haven't watched any of the other remakes though, but from what i've heard, skam españa and maybe druck are the ones who've changed it up the most. if you wanted to check them out on your own, i'd probably recommend those. some of the remakes straight up copied the storylines, which makes me less interested in watching.

The 2011 terrorist attack was not on a group like kosegruppa, like Marketta says. It was first a bombing of the builing where the prime minister and the labour party had their offices, and then the terrorist drove from Oslo to the Utøya island and killed all those kids (and some adults too). The kids were part of the youth labour party and the summer camp was a political camp for this party. The terrorist wanted to attack them for their left-wing politics, and for being inclusive to immigrants. Also, he will never get out of prison. 21 years is the limit for when he has to be reevaluated, but he does not regret wat he did and he still believes what he does, so he will never be a safe man to release.

Julie Andem, the creator interviewed some 3000 teens from all over Norway before she started Skam. I think she had planned 6 seasons, two per school year at Hartvig Nissens, ending with Russe. Unfortunately, the huge international popularity resulted in zealous fans hounding the actors and invading the school grounds. Julie hasn't said why she decided to end it after season 4, but I get the feeling she got a bit burned out, the actors, especially Tarjei, got overwhelmed by international fans, and maybe the school also didn't want any more filming there, though I don't know that. You guys should definitely watch the 4 season bloopers when you're done with the show, oh and also Even's birthday video to Isak!

I'm not sure why Isak's "Life is now" speach makes me a bit down. I think it's because he mentions that before he met Even he lived a "fake" life, and when Eva asks, he adds that by "fake" he means "laying at home watching Narcos, and gaming". I mean, you see during the whole season that that is NOT what Isak is doing. His life is fake because his friends are forcing him to go to parties he doesn't want to go to, where he wastes his time by pretending to like girls, and thereby living fake. You also get to see that all the boys, (Even included) actually likes gaming, and in the chats they talk a lot about TV shows. Maybe I'm just a bit sensitive because these are hobbies I'M into, and since when is that a "fake life"?

Got to add about the 2011 terrorist attack in Norway. It was very relevant to the Sana season coming. Utøya was NOT some random summer camp with international kids. No, this was the AUF summer camp, the youth wing of the Norwegian Labour party which has gotten together on the Island of Utøya for decades. I was on the very same island as a teenager, since I was in fact member of AUF. Just like Russ Bus, this is kind of difficult to understand fully without knowing Norwegian culture. In Norway political engagement and democracy is a pretty big thing. Teenagers get engaged in politics very young. The main parties in Norway mainly get their politicians from the youth wing of the party. At Utøya teenagers got together to discuss politics, learn about how to hold speech, have debate and simply have fun. These are very idealistic people who kind of want to save the world. A lot of teenagers of immigrant parents are there because it is a very inclusive organization which fights against racism wants to reduce world poverty etc. The terrorist Anders Behring Breivik was a far right white supremacists and he absolutely hated muslims and he viewed the Norwegian labour party and AUF as traitors. He blamed them for Norway having immigrants. Thus his whole plan was to completely destroy the Norwegian labour party. By literately murdering every member and would be members. So he blew up the government building in downtown Oslo hoping to kill all the grownup members. Then he went to Utøya to kill all the young people he believed would become the future members of that party. His idea was to murder everyone and make sure there was nothing left of the party. So no, this was not a random killing of teenagers. This was a large scale political assassination. He did it because he did not want people like Sana in Norway.

Yo, if you guys DO decide to watch the remakes, (which I kinda don't expect you to, because there are A LOT of them at this point, and yeah, the storyline is kinda similar to the orig.) I would HIGHLY suggest Druck, the German remake. It's my personal fave, but also, very popular amongst the skam fandom as a whole. (I'd even venture as to say most popular..?) S1 is pretty similar to OG, but it does change up a lot by S2. I'd say, out of all the remakes, it has the most 'skam' feel. Music storyline, casting, cinematography....all of it is so great. German William....not as much of a dickhead. S3 especially of Druck is just.........*chef's kiss*. Girl Squad. Amazing, beautiful! Boy Squad......best boy squad, no competition. German Jonas is the best Jonas. Perhaps even better than og. S4????? Outstaaaanding. OG left the chat. Also, Druck is one of the more ethnically diverse remakes, which I love. So yeah, if you watch just one remake, it should be Druck! (in my opinion) 💗✌🏽

You should give Skam France S3 a chance. The other seasons aren't that good but season 3 is phenomenal. And this is also the first country to get a season 5 and 6, so original seasons not based on the OG anymore.

About the remakes: This might be an unpopular opinion but I really don't think you guys would enjoy watching the remakes. As you mention in the video, even if they do change some stuff and the personalities of the characters are a bit different in some versions, they are pretty much the same story just told in different languages. Some do a good job of adapting the show to the culture of the country it is set in, but I don't know if that alone makes them worth watching for you guys. I enjoy all the remakes (some more than others ofc) but it is also a personal opinion of mine that none of the other versions capture the "realness" that the OG has, that is to say they don't make you feel as if someone just left a camera on the room and forgot it was recording, that feeling you guys were also talking about in the video, they feel a lot more like TV shows, but maybe thats just my opinion. Also! You guys should totally watch the bloopers for each season if you want to see a bit of the behind the scenes and the making of the show, they are great. If you are interested in maybe watching some of the remakes tho: I would suggest Druck (Skam Germany) because I feel like its the most different. Skam France is also worth considering because it is the first Skam that is making more than 4 seasons, they already confirmed they are making two completely new seasons that won't be based in the original. The thing about France is that, people seem to like their season 3, but the other seasons... not so much, the first two seasons are pretty much a copy of the OG and they made some questionable choices in season 4. Cheers ❤

If I understand you correctly, you want to see a documentary about the seasons. I found this kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2fKdK2up9l8htU It´s the story about how Julie Andem and Mary Magnus came up with ideas for these stories in the first place. They really put an effort into the making of Skam!

Are you guys going to react to all the skam remakes???

wtfock (skam belgium) is really good in my opinion. their second season, the noorhelm relationship and their william character (senne) is god teir. wtfock's william is actually the best lol, so you should definitely check that out and the third season is pretty amazing and realistic, even more so than the others imo.

I've loved following along with this season with you guys, all of your reactions and commentary and thoughts have been amazing ❤ I just want to share a thought: I've watched all of the remakes, and I think that none of them are worth it. They pale in comparison to this original Skam, so.. up to you if you'd like to watch, but it is just the same storylines, but not nearly as good. I'm looking forward to supporting you guys further!

When you finish watching season 4, if you want to see a remake I would say choose DRUCK (skam Germany) since it is the most original or different...season 1 is basically the same but 2, 3 and 4 are very good and different . (I think all remake have something special, except for France, it's the worst)

It was a political youth camp for a left wing party. It is a general thing in the norse country parties have youth factions. It was a camp for one of them. There were not really any foreigners there.

Hi my name is Yasemin, i’m from Turkey. I’ve been watching you guys for a long time but i don’t usually comment. This is the second time i’ve heard Marketa pronounce turkish words and i’m wondering if she knows the language. Just curious :)

Love ur reactions and looking forward to S4. I have watched all of the SKAM remakes and this is my suggestion. Finish SKAM OG S4 then watch all the bloopers. Each remake’s S1 & S2 was pretty much a mirror image of SKAM OG and that was due to contract negotiations. But each remake was given a lot of flexibility on how to portray S3....the gay season. I would immediately start watching SKAM France S3....skip S1 & S2 as there is not much difference in the storyline. SKAM France has created a masterpiece in my opinion and it is the best love story I have ever watched whether gay or hetero.... u won’t regret it! And if u want to continue watching remakes, I would watch Druck next and it’s a toss up on the rest. SKAM Austin is my least favorite of all the remakes and that is a shame because I live in the US. Also wtFock S3 is currently airing and it looks very promising as well.

It’s probably a good idea not to watch a remake, because it’s a very divisive topic. Everyone says to start with Skam France because it was the first, but no one loves season 1 or 2 that much. Germany and the Netherlands were my favourites because they changed some really key things, but had the same sort of feel to OG skam. Germany especially changed some massive plot points but the journey to get to them was very similar to OG. The only remake that’s almost entirely different is Skam España, you can vaguely seem a few scenes as inspiration for certain moments but it’s incredibly different.
