The North Face

3 жыл бұрын

Parenthood is an adventure like no other, not least in the world of adventure, where reward is constantly measured against potential risk. From fear of losing sponsors to the challenge of maintaining their expedition-led lifestyles, “New Life” chronicles the journey of The North Face’s Caroline Ciavaldini and James Pearson and documents the shifting priorities that come with raising a son in a world that revolves around climbing and outdoor exploration.

This is the first time I've ever seen a beautiful, powerful, outdoor film that also vibrantly expresses the joy and conflict and beauty of motherhood, and also of risk, and love and passion for the outdoors. I have three kids, 6, 4, and almost 2 years old. Before I had kids I was climbing as much as humanly possible between school and jobs. Letting go of climbing for the last 6 years has been so painful. We take the kids outdoors, we hike and bike and "climb" with them, but it's not the same as being able to go on a climbing trip every weekend. this last weekend I took my first real climbing trip with my climbing friends since having kids. I led a bunch of 5.7 old-school trad, I felt old and tired and weak, and I still got to taste the beauty of pushing through fear and the power of climbing and the outdoors. Thank you TNF and the producers and Caroline for making a film that shows how it feels to love the wild and love your child. Thanks for representing mothers as multifaceted human beings with passion and love, for their children and for other stuff, and how that makes them better, not worse, mothers.

Thanks very much Emma, that is a very kind message. We did put a lot of time and emotion into this movie and we are super proud of it, as it really sums up our life as parent AND climbers! It is tough to make it all happen, but it is also our best years so far!

I never comment on anything ever but this time I felt I had to. I am a mom of two little kids (3 and 4 yo) and also I am an immigrant in Australia from Europe. I'm dealing with depression for a few years now and had absolutely no idea how am I gonna be able to get better mentally. This story really hit me hard, I watched it many times in the last few days. The way you describe the struggles with kids also your mum's story is just so incredibly beautiful somehow, it is so touching, I am so very grateful I found this. I wish you well and thank you so much for sharing your story. I'm pretty sure that I am not the only one person who had a few aha moments listening to this. 🙏💕

When my spouse and I were young we went non stop and did whatever WE wanted to do at anytime. We didn't realize at the time how selfish we were or really how selfish we were allowed to be. It was all about us and our adventure. It was something we never imagined would end. We had 2 kids and realized just how selfish we were because everything in our life was about just us. Now that we have 2 kids there is nothing that is about us. Everything is about them and helping them to become the person they need to be. It's been wonderful and adventures are different but still full filling because you get to see this little person you have raised experience life for the first time and to see them blossom. This was a great piece North Face and something A LOT of new and young parents need to see. It's still possible to adventure you just adventure differently. Shit still happens too. My wife is just off crutches from a broken Tibia. That was an adventure itself. Parents it keeps getting better and more exciting.

The oil and gas industry is very thankful to The North Face for using at least 90% petroleum to manufacture all of its clothing. This is much higher than the industry average, with other clothing companies averaging only 60% to make their fabrics. So it's excellent to see The North Face process an extraordinarily high consumption of these non-renewable resources, and therefore is a highly valued customer of the oil and gas industry, and heavy polluter in manufacturing unsustainable petroleum based clothing products.

"We are still prepared to put ourselves into situations that might ultimately leave Arthur without parents." This is a bold statement. But I am feeling somehow the whole story is missing the child's perspective. I think the whole story would be more complete if the voice of the person mostly affected by these choices could also be heard or at least considered. But this is a general issue with the "success stories" about family and parenthood. They are narrated by adults, they outline the needs and wants of adults and are rarely -if ever- child-centric. I have been climbing for more than 20 years. Since I became an adoptive parent I am struggling with my risk taking on a whole different level. Having read the research and also seen first hand what trauma and loss can mean to a child, it is really hard for me to concur with James' statement. This is my subjective experience and to be honest I feel very uncomfortable sharing it on a public medium especially below a commercial video. But somehow I hope this perspective could also be considered by the producers, the protagonists and the public even if it messes up with the "carefree life" image that outdoor companies wish to present.

A pregnant woman could get hurt in many ways and as climbers we think of risk differently then the general public. And then we all have our own opinions regardless. So when I judge her choice I think, “If I was a woman and preggers, would I climb at that point of pregnancy 🤔🤷🏼‍♂️🤔”???? I would limit it to TR and be able to get to a hospital reasonably quick personally, because my child’s safety and at least being able to get medical attention quickly is more important than a few months of not being as adventurous as I’d like to be. But it’s her life, and totally respect her choice. Hindsight is 20/20 as they say.......

On a semi-related note. I have never seen people climb so often on twin ropes! I just want to ask WHY? Is it for easier route navigation & less drag? But all the shots show them always clipping both? Is it for safety? That you have two smaller ropes, so if one breaks, or is worn, you still have the other? If anyone knows, I am so curious! I have climbed a lot and just never seen anyone actually using twin ropes
@paulgranada7203
@paulgranada7203 3 жыл бұрын
In Europe is really common to use twin ropes for trad climbing... less rope drag, less risk of breaking in case of a rock fall and less rappels to get back to the ground ;)
@Thuky1
@Thuky1 3 жыл бұрын
For multi pitch climbing half ropes are very useful as you can abseil the full rope length. For some routes it is even necessary to have half ropes because the "abseil piste" does not follow the route and the ankers are 50m or even 60m apart. Twin ropes are used for the reasons you mentioned (redundancy) and they also give softer falls which puts less stress on trad gear.
