This was cringe worthy (not the video itself very well made!) It's no wonder T7's story turned out the way it did. As much as I like harada I didn't realize he was this absent when it came to actually trying to develop the characters. but anyway, this series deserves so many more views! keep up the awesome work!

Harada's interview basically reveals why the later numbered titles are "meh" at best. T7 really shows that they just didn't care about the characters, with a lackluster story mode and character endings that mostly consist of joke endings that feel like they were made in about five minutes.

@TechNoirMK: Year 1: Tekken 1 Year 3: Tekken 2 Year 22: Tekken 3 Year 24: Tekken 4, Tekken 5, Tekken 6, Tekken 7!!!! Such an eventful year, with a total of 4 tournaments, an ancient Evil God, a full blown world war, no less than 3 different heads of the Michima Zaibatsu and so forth. 😂

Jin's story is what really got me into Tekken, I just bought Tekken 6 when I got my PS3 because I had played it a few times at my friends house. I didn't even know the game had an actual story, I just thought people fought for no reason. When I started up the game I saw the intro video that explains everything that's happened in the main story so far. I was really intrigued and went to the internet to look up more. Ever since then I've been a huge fan of Tekken and the whole Mishima story. And as a fan I'd really wish they'd flesh out the characters more to make them seem a bit more real. I agree with what you have said in your video and as a fan it makes me really sad to think that the creators don't seem to care as much about the characters in the game as all the fans do.

STORY STRUCTURE: __[protag]__ *wants* __[goal]__ , *but* __[antag]__ *and* __[flaw]__ make it impossible! To achieve the goal, (s)he must overcome the flaw, grow as a person, and defeat the antagonist. Success = drama/comedy; failure = tragedy/dark comedy. JIN wants REDEMPTION, but KAZUYA, his DEEP BITTERNESS make it impossible. To redeem himself, Jin must reconcile his mother's death, wrestle a literal inner demon, and defeat Kazuya. In the end he FAILS, succumbs to the devil, and becomes like his father (because Tekken is a tragedy). If they would just hire writers to write narratives instead of taking the first idea they have and plonking it on-screen with zero thought, video game movies (and video game stories) wouldn't suck so much!

Despite it's flaws first Mortal Kombat movie is still best liveaction movie adaptation after all these years. Even first Street Fighter is watchable compared to those came later. When I watched Legend of Chun-li, I couldn't belive how bad they made it and expected no one make worst than that, Tekken and King of fighters proved me wrong. Tekken and KOF don't have any good animated movies either. How companies allows that kind of movies? Is it really that easy getting their games licence?

EDIT: Holy smokes at the Queen's Blade section. I'm very surprised Namco was okay with allowing even one of their Tekken characters in that game.

This was a great retrospective and you saved the best bits for last. I think the thing I was most disappointed by was the Blood Vengeance movie, it could've been an AMAZING movie and a great way to show that video game movies can work. I still remember when news came out that it was actually going to be a thing and I was actually a little hyped for it. Then the movie came out and I watched it ... It was HORRIBLE. Beautiful CGI and action but terrible everywhere else and even though it had Nina (my favorite character in the series), she couldn't even save it for me LOL. See here's what I would've done if I was making a CGI Tekken movie. For the main characters, I'd have Ling Xiaoyu team up with Hwoarang or Asuka team up with Hwoarang, just pretty much have two of the characters closest to Jin though heck, I'd even take Asuka/Lili duo as the leads. Just two people who have inclination with Jin in some way and have them seek him out. Xiaoyu because of her love interest in him and wanting to save him and Hwoarang because he still wants to beat him in a fight or Asuka because she exhibited that she can suppress the Devil gene. Just turn the movie into a fun actiony adventure to get to Jin and subsequently Kazuya and Heihachi (have the last scene of the real Blood Vengeance movie play out). The problem of the original movie was Alisa who is just bleh and Shin who was an edgy tryhard and wasn't needed when Tekken already had a good number of characters already. I dunno maybe I'm geeking out too hard here but I'm just that upset that they botched the movie that bad and the only positive I can say about it other than the CGI is that I' would watch it over the live action movie. I never actually watched the live action one but seeing the clips you included, I'm glad I didn't. Just AWFUL. Move over Nina, let Eddy get to work LOL Aside from that, I had never seen that interview with Harada (I don't really follow him to be honest) and I was surprised to hear he cares that little about the characters and it makes it all the more apparent of why characters like Lars, Alisa, and the others we got post Tekken 5 felt so underwhelming compared to the classics that only certain kinds of people would actually like. His talk about Alisa's creation... Wow lol. It's no wonder I didn't like the character, she really did seem like an after though with a tacky rushed design (Same with Lars). Well nonetheless, I really did enjoy this retrospective, you really did go above and beyond and it was fun to watch, great work!

great retrospective nostalgicgamer!!!(you should do a snk retrospective.:3) i actually love lili in queen's blade spiral chaos honestly(especially her handshake with jean,though i love the "if you touch her you son of a-"reaction you gave eddy to the kiss scene and especially in nina's spin off.makes me imagine that as namco's allowance of her appearance.) as i like her interactions with characters like leina,cattleya,tomoe,nowa,allenye,shizuka,melpha,nanael and echidna as well as other game characters like mai shiranui,dizzy,wonder momo,noel,ivy valentine,cham cham & iroha more than the main series(where along with being a les yay bait with asuka or being to close to ripping off karin kanzuki compared to her being given a bit more with a hidden perv side in this one,which the series already started hinting at in some interactions like ganryu kinda felt weakened asuka's character with her appearances in recent games being les yay bait instead of unique interactions.) since she still keeps her personality compared to nina(would've preferred anna got a spin off as nina's kinda a boring bitch outside her interactions with her and steve.)
@ryukang19957 жыл бұрын
Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat were the only fighting games that got good adaptations (despite some crappy ones too) that I can remember, but sadly, the same can't be said for Tekken, which has none outside of some fun and well made little fan productions. Like you said, the people involved with Tekken adaptations (including Harada himself) seem to care very little about the plot and characters of the game. That's not the case with the Street Fighter II or Mortal Kombat films from 1994-95 as the makers of those movies truly realized the characters from the game in a setting that not only works as adaptations, but also standalone action films fans of the genre can enjoy.

Kind of a sad ending to this retrospective. Hopefully you do one with Tekken7 and I personally love T7 as it returns to basics in gameplay with less juggles. There's something tacky about Tekken's journey with its lack of director's singular vision but it also was an endearing aspect for me since I was a kid. With iconic low poly hairdos of Mishimas and the mixed real martial arts style from my favorite action movies of the 80s through the 90s, it was a fantasy experience of an all-star action star cast that you can take control of for the ultimate close quarter combat. I haven't enjoyed the more anime fantastical newer characters such as Alisa. I liked when the combat styles was grounded. Character storylines was secondary to me as they served to be fleshing out the characters and give them a personal backdrop to drive their action. But I've always returned to the fight itself.

The only good thing about the film was the threesome with Nina and Anna. I disagree i like Blood Vengeance, its not always about the Mishimas or Nina. I appreciate that they focused on different characters the whole film with Alisa and Xiaoyu, giving us plenty of moe material and fleshing out their characters for a different audience. I think they have represented the characters in a good way, and yes many times Tekken comes out corny if they try to be funny, its nothing new. I really dont understand the end of the video, are you implying Alisa is a bad designed character? Not at all, in my opinion shes the best designed character in a fighting game. Her crazy moves come out straight up from Dark Stalkers but it is still in a 3D fighting game. Harada can be proud of that character.

Kevin Thomas no tekken force, no arcade stories for the characters once you finish all stages that's it, no unlockables like characters save for cosmetic stuff, the story mode is so short and goes nowhere that I wonder why they bothered to begin with. It resolves nothing and just leaves more questions. It's not a bad game it just seems like a step back in content.

Hate to break it to you guys, but did we all forget that in a fighting game story is not a primary focus; it's always been about the gameplay. It was just happened to be that the story they just put together ended up being interesting. It could've been another Virtua Fighter who almost NONE of the fans give a shit about, but somehow it ended up just being more interesting than any development staff member probably could've anticipated. They think of a fun character with different attributes and moves that would be fun to create for fans to enjoy, then the story just comes second. The only game I can think of that almost does the reverse and has been almost equally successful is Mortal Kombat; that game seems to emphasize more on story than balanced gameplay. But look what the devs have to do to keep that game going; they throw everything, including the kitchen sink to keep those games entertaining because the gameplay can hardly stand on its own; its far more unbalanced than any other respectable fighter, and is now barely something tournament-worthy whereas fans can always trust and go back to SF or Tekken games and expect a fair and balanced means of competition in almost any entry; the games become more timeless. That's the mark of a good fighting game. To be this critical of a FIGHTING game's story is absurd. I love you work, Nostalgic Gamer but I think your argument doesn't hold strong; the devs are doing what they're supposed to be doing; creating a balanced and fun fighting game. If they focused on making the story their priority then they'd lose more fans that way than they would by continuing their current plotlines that you are saying is really hurting the franchise (which I don't think it is).
@Scorpions21343 жыл бұрын
the series were great, however as an ender to the the series with the retrospective on the films, i just gotta say it, i loved blood vengance, alisa is my favorite character in Tekken, and i've been playing since tekken 3 came out. Sure they might say it wasn't very thought out by the director, but the director didn't do any of the work did he? The designers put their efforts in making alisa what she is. The live action adaptations might be arguable, as a die hard fan of tekken i really enjoyed the first movie, sure the production value wasn't the greatest, but still it tried to port a very linear fighting game story into a movie. Overall I don't agree much with all the harsh criticism on the movies, the lore of tekken in and on itself is very vague and bland, and just added as a flavor and nothing more, so any adaptation that is made should be taken with a grain of salt, as there isn't much to begin with.

Tekken 7 was underwhelming. I hope Harada leaves and someone that actually gives a shit takes over the game series. I own all the tekken games. I have tekken 5 on ps2, dark resurrection on psp and I bought that game again for my PS3. Harada doesn't give a shit. Tekken 7 doesn't even look pretty. Input lag is a motherfucker on PS4. I think the game artist and animators, they brought the games to life. I suspect Tekken 7 was made with Unreal engine 4 because alot of the original staff probably quit and screwed with the tekken game engine used in Tekken 6 and tekken tag 2 so there's nothing to work with. Tekken 7 has a great story arc for Hehaichi, but the game is bare AF. Like I said, I hope Harada is out

Tekken 4 is considered the black sheep in the franchise from a gameplay perspective, so the rest of the games stand out by comparison. I personally have played and enjoyed Tekken 3, Tag Tournament 1, and Tekken 6. General opinion from what I've seen favors Tekken 2, 3, 5, and the two Tag Tournament games.
