Actually, I don’t. I may not be wealthy enough to bribe ADs to put me on a supposed waitlist for a lazily-designed watch that only its mother could love, but one day I may be. Because I don’t like the Cubitus Thierry Stern made it clear the watch is not for me, which suits me fine. If fortune smiles on me financially and I’m able to spend $40k on a stainless steel trinket, I will take my hard-earned cash to a alternative high horology brand that respects me as a customer and earns my respect in return. That will give me the kind of positive appreciative feeling Patek clearly no longer cares about. I’m sure that, despite its crude appearance and unattractive name, the Cubitus will have no trouble finding enough insecure rappers and D-list celebrities willing to buy the thing for the status bestowed by the name on the dial. If it makes you happy, fill your boots.

We can debate for hours about that. The looks, the price, etc. I heard one creator say basically that because it was a design from Mr. Stern himself, it went through the whole process until production because he is just surrounded by yes men who will validate everything he says and does. We see that in many corporations in the world. It does make sense. Especially when you know that it won't really matter because these things will sell like croissants to who it was always targeted at: their hardcore fan base already customers (never has it been thought about for new, younger customers, this is delusional and out of touch with reality, which I think is the case of Mr. Stern sadly)

I have been waiting for this video from you, @TheoandHarris. Big Patek collector here. I believe that this watch just doesn't make any sense. Having followed the brand for many years, it seems to my like Patek got more and more arrogant over the recent years. One example is the watch with the face of Mr Philippe Stern on it. Imagine Ferrari would release a car with Enzo Ferrari's face across the whole bonnet of the car. Already the idea of it just seems silly. But the Cubitus goes even a step further. Your are essentially taking the most successful design of the most successful designer of the modern watch era (Gerald Genta) and changing it in a way that unmistakably screams: "Look at us, we are even better than Genta himself." It just seems extremely arrogant.

When the images first came out I thought it was an April Fools kinda thing. The next day was the official release. I couldn’t believe it! This reminded me of the current gen BMW 7 series release with its gigantic ugly grille and unnecessary headlights design. What’s wrong with it: 42mm is too big for a thin square plain steel watch that looks like a Nautilus. It’s too top heavy a shape for the design. This is actually incredible considering Patek’s timeless design language. If it were more rectangular and smaller it could’ve worked, and actually been something nice. Obviously the price point is ridiculous and it’s aimed for hype buyers who look at people like Mark Wahlberg has on his wrist, who imo buys every single new sports watch just to say he got it first. The Nautlilus bracelet doesn’t for the case shape as has been discussed. Perhaps if they release 39mm size it will wear and look better in this format.

The size is the worst part, followed closely by the derivativeness. Maybe if they removed the Nautilus ears and named it something completely different rather than cube and tus to again… refer back to the fucking Nautilus. So unbelievably lazy. People say that this is a similar reaction to when the Aquanaut was released, but it was sooo different with a rubber strap and grenade dial. Yes you could see that were related but that’s okay. They even gave it a good name. Not Aquanus or something stupid like that. I’m sure seeing a cube in real life would maybe warm you to it a bit more but the fact still remains… derivative.

You can only make a watch in so many shapes, I don't think it is a horrible as people make it out to be. Cartier has many a square watch which work. Apple watch, JLC and vacheron is a rectangle that runs long with the bracelet. I think here lies the design issue that watch runs wide on the wrist perpendicular to the band. Something we are less conditioned to seeing. It is not a bad iteration of the nautilus in another shape. I think without wearing it I would reserve judgement.

Years from now, when we have all forgotten about the Nautilus, the Cubitus will just be seen as nothing more than the mass market brand of High end horology ( A Lange makes in the hundreds, while Parmiagiani in thousands... There are so many aspects to the cubitus. 1. It is not very original, basically a nautilus dial in a square box. Plus a date stuck at the top. 2. But, and this is how I truly feel, this watch looks very interesting. And to me, it is quite beautiful. If I have to attach labels, then I would reserve the term ugly for the aquanaut. And the nautilus is odd and only through getting used to it may one find it beautiful. 3. The seemingly simple square design introduces an interesting tension between a dynamic impression and a static case. Very modern, yet with staying power. 4. Bottom line, I find this the most beautiful and attractive Patek, and if it wasn’t so outrageously priced, I would go for one. Remains to be seen if this line cannibalizes nautilus and aquanaut sales, or adds to them.

Thierry Stern said a couple of years ago that he didn't want Patek to be a one watch brand like AP. Also, I think he is a bit worried about the frustration among Patek fans about the unavailability of the steel Nautilus when it was in production. The Cubitus might be Pateks attempt to make a steel bracelet dressy sports watch available to Patek fans. A watch that isn't immediately ripped from the shelves by flippers and non-Patek customers who only want the Nautilus. For that to happen they must make a watch with less mainstream appeal than the Nautilus, at a price point not too easily available. Basically pleasing the Patek customers rather than the hype-world.

If you wanted to get your feet wet the sports options really were nautilus or aquanaut which are unobtainable, a 5905 in steel in the 50k pricepoint or say screw it and just eat the secondary market upcharge or buy stuff you dislike. As someone looking to start with patek they always get really pushy trying to start people with Calatravas. It seems Thierry Stern and sons are making watches much bigger with more garish dials, tarmac texture, colours etc. I think they’re trying get away from being dominated by the Nautilus plus a series ‘old-man style’ watches but those are the ones that I like! I’m waiting to see the new 96 but starting think it might not happen. There’s always vintage but they’re not cheap and usually have been over polished and probably very expensive to maintain.

I love a square/rectangular watch and I can’t get onboard with this. So many watch makers have been able to get it right: Cartier, Tag Heuer, JLC and even Bell & Ross have more attractive offerings.

Saw it ‘in the flesh’ in Geneva, and given you can’t buy a sports Patek (without a stupid speculator premium) I really really wanted to love it…😩

All luxury goods need the 'hype machine' aspect to survive, but the ones that survive provide consumers plausible deniability under the real aspects of high horology and innovation. This watch openly announces 'the emperor has no clothes, what are you gonna do about it?' and only despots around the world(the real target demographic maybe?) enjoy that kind of thing.
