Quick correction - first G-Shock came out in 1983, it was a digital 'square', very very similar to many of the square they still make today. They range in price from ~$50 to ~$4500.

I will say, I had ZERO interest in watches up until the beginning of this year (age 29). Meanwhile my father has been into the hobby forever. C&S. T4YC. I really don't get this huge disparity between your posh watch, which you hardly ever wear, and some kind of horrid beater watch. Fair enough, if you're going on an assault course, wear a G Shock. But everyday, you should be wearing your main watch. And if you aren't, I am kind of thinking that you can't really afford it. So I use my Pelagos as an everyday, fixing cars, washing motorcycles, cooking watch. But I also have 3 Baltics which get quite careful use. And my G Shocks get various usage.

I screwed up my first luxury watch purchase. Got a Hamilton Intra Matic Chrono Automatic in green. I agonized over whether or not I could pull off 40mm with a smaller wrist. Tried it on, thought I could pull it off. A few months later, after wearing it, its obvious to me that I can't, and its not the diameter that's the issue, but the giant lugs they put on it! For now, I'm planning on keeping it, kind of as a reminder more than anything else. I loved the look of it so much I got tunnel vision. I wanted to be able to say "Hey, I got a chronograph on my first luxury watch!" as if people would care. Sometimes you love the look or concept or something so much that when you see it in person you become blind to its flaws, regardless of how glaring they are. But now I know, and I won't get tunnel vision again!

‼️ Woops! You got that “Fake” wrong, maybe because it means money in your pocket. That’s not nice. Fake is fake, doesn’t matter if it is about watches, perfumes, cars, clothing, art or any kind of product or design. Every original product has people behind it, investing money, time, energy, ideas, risking a lot, making mistakes, trying again. IT IS WRONG TO SUPPORT AND RECOMMEND PEOPLE WHO TRY TO SHORTCUT THIS, faking that they’re doing it “for the people”. They are doing it to get rich and exploit other people’s work and history and legacy. There are nice ORIGINAL products at any price. Also a lot of good products taking inspiration, but staying away from being a replica/copy. Please don’t take money or recommend fake kind of products and people. Also, keep up the great work. Wonderful conversations! 👍

I didn’t get the Watch obsession until earlier this year. I’m 29. I’ve had one or two watches and wore them all the time for the last 10 years. My dad was a police officer so luxury items like mechanical watches were not attainable or anything I knew existed growing up. I went to a golf tournament this past March and noticed how most of the cool looking dads in their late 30s had omegas and Rolex’s. That’s what triggered me to do some research and uncovered the watch collecting rabbit hole. Now I plan on going to nyc in December to celebrate my 30th birthday and going to a few watch dealers and picking out my first big boy watch. Looking at sinn longines and zodiac since I’m after something I can wear almost every day if I have to.

Bought the CW12. Can afford a rolex, and was about to snap up a Speedmaster, but I so happy I got the CW rather as is a great entry-level luxury watch (and my first mechanical) that I will keep as an heirloom for my kids graduation one day. It's so well finished and solid for under $2k (I don't want to hear people comparing this to the PRX). Also bought the Breda Pulse Tandem earlier this year - it's such a unique dial that is sure to be a great convo starter, and it's even helped me bag a beautiful girl who had a Longines hand-me-down. Have a G Shock as well for that watch in my collection that's simple, tough, playful.

Charlie looks good, but the Soprod C125 is not a true GMT movement. Take a look at Traska watches, especially its Ventura line. It uses the fairly new Miyota 9075 GMT movement, which is a true GMT movement. So, if you like the feel of the Rolex GMT as the world's first GMT manufacturer with Pan Am Airlines help in the 50's and how it operates by changing the hour hand independently and adjusting the GMT hand with the regular time-setting function, you'll love the Ventura GMT. There are also several other brands that use that movement, such as the Bulova Wilton GMT, Gavox Longitude, Boldr Odyssey Freediver GMT, Borelis Estoril GMT, etc. ETA and Sellita need to catch up with Miyota.

Fake fragrances is more like a homage as opposed to an actual fake. If they call it Tom Ford Tuscan Leather that’s illegal and wrong, but they’re using their own name and formula (most likely). Also trademarking a fragrance is near impossible. I’ve had clients who have tried.

I think micro-brands are to the low to mid-end of watch making, as the independents are to the higher end. I don't think there has ever been a better time to buy a watch on a lower budget. The micro-brands are able to create things and take risks that the bigger brands only wish they could consider ❤

Best way to « save money » …buy THE watch you’re hoping for and avoid buying any in the meantime. If you get one or two 1000$ watches in the meantime and then a few more ones averaging 500$ or so… you spend a few 1000$´à that do not go towards your ultimate purchase. Got my Omega this summer after a few years of « shopping » … it’s the perfect watch for me and it removed any desire to buy more.
