Said it before … the soft drink manufacturers need to pay for clearing up their plastic mess. They should be sponsoring at least 10 interceptors each.

Has anyone started using discarded plastic bottles filled with dirt, sand, or water as building materials. Flexible, stackable, filled bottles would provide adobe-thick walls & get rid of waste in a productive way that also saves us from having to use up more resources to build housing. Like a straw bale home but the insulation and upkeep is lower. I know it’s not perfect, but it’s a real way to use up the trash bottles, no?

No they don’t, and must never have. Unlimited funding will first of all lead to executive salaries rising to the tens of millions of dollars, thus contributing to a great steal. Fighting for resources will ensure maximum return in tons of plastic. I fully sympathize with your idealism, but we must never rule out human greed, which got us here in the first place.

I'm eager to see the results of all the hard work. The only solution is to attack the problem at as many levels as possible. But the most important of all is to actually do something about the problem and not just hold meetings and raise funds. Talk is cheap. Action speaks!

The first and main level is capitalism itself. A purely greed based system of wealth distribution that has become destroying the climate, resources, humanity overall, and life itself. Capitalism must be outlawed internationally, or eventually we're all fooked.

I would also give the barricade of the first try another thought. But then don’t fight the water-forces, make use out of it. You can see that the water is heavier than the plastic and wants to get down, by doing so the plastic is pushed up. Guid the plastic up and away / out from the river. Build the barrier with an angle of attack / diagonal, this way new plastic is pushing, propelled by the water-force, the old plastic out. Also you’re making space for more plastic to come and you take the stress out of your barrier. Just need to see where to get a plastic dump field, which can be filled up temporarily with all that incoming plastic. Let me know what you think!!

Having g watched the original short documentary from the CEO of The Ocean Cleanup two year ago from Guatemala, it is great to see that the engineering took place a year ago. Sadly first project design failed, but the engineers learned from first design and redeveloped it nine months ago, so change looking positive. A huge task, but little by little. You will prevail. Feeling a little less sad after seeing devastation from two years ago. Keep going. Just need to educate public, enforce fly tipping and get community on board. Positive vibes. Good luck. The wildlife will be thankful and glad to see governmental departments of Guatemala finally on board, after ignoring it over the years. ❤

One of the most thrilling things is how you are supporting locals who have been struggling with the problem of plastic waste- your insights and know-how is giving them hope that it can be tackled and efficiently managed in some way, but wow we need the product package designers to be a part of this project and see the consequences of their plastic package choices to create a decrease in the tap as well- do you invite local government and manufacturers of plastic packaging to observe what you are doing? It's easy for them to say they don't know if they never see where their choices end up. Ideally, Videos like this will hopefully reach their phones and desks and TVs everyday until they make a change. In Japan, they say that none of the plastic bottles we collect in beach cleanups can be recycled, I would be interested to hear how the plastic you are sorting is used in Guatemala and other areas, thanks.
