This was a theme Rod Serling visited again and again in his writing. The idea of dealing with the pressure of a high profile job and escaping into one's past somehow. Serling was a highly driven man and was constantly dealing with pressure. Some of it was his battles with the networks but most of it was self inflicted pressure. By the time he died he was reportedly drinking more, having marriage problems and seeing a psychiatrist. When he died on the operating table he looked much older than his 50 years.

Trying to keep up with life's pressures sometimes can definitely age a person, it's too bad some feel that much pressure and feel trapped.

Have you ever thought that when you started watching the early Twilight Zones, in your young age, whether you watched it in the 50's, 60',s 70's, or whenever, that you never ever thought it was trying to tell you something important to your life? You always thought it was just entertainment? Then you become very old in your life and start realizing the Twilight Zone was trying to warn you but you didn't listen. Sadly, you may have realized it was too late. It's like since the Twilight Zone started we were all put into the Twilight Zone.

Sounds like a twilight zone episode in itself lol

Apparently Serling's favorite episode from first season. Howard Smith's " Push, push, push! " is awesome. As usual, Serling incorporates classic irony in the finale. The funeral home's name is, of course, Willoughby.

I like your interpretations of the episode. It seems like he valued being at Willoughby more than the life he was living, as if it was a positive escape from a negative reality. Who wouldn’t, a nagging wife at home, and a boardroom of cranky old men, versus a quaint happy little town where everyone knows your name.

You’re making me feel hot all rugged up as it’s summer here in Australia. Great episode imo. Push, push, push gets stuck in your head! Loved that Willoughby and Sons were the funeral directors that picked up Garts body at the finale

Just a few more months and our spring will be here in the US. This episode will probably rank in my top 5 so far. I really liked the twist at the end. Caught me by surprise,

I looked up the door handle in the middle of the door. It apparently proved more security with a crossbar across the door for more reinforced support. Very interesting. Seems odd for sure.

I think Willoughby is his version of heaven. BTW I'm sorry you are cold there , I am retired and live the USA winter month in Tanzania Africa, pretty hot here.

We may long for a slower, simpler time. But every era had their problems. For example, think of what life would be like without our medical and dental advances. If I had lived 100 years ago, I would have died in childbirth. Maybe we should take the good things from the past, and make those things a part of our culture today; Good manners, slowing down and visiting people in person rather than on the phone. And let's bring back childhood, and give our kids something good to look back on. I honestly think if enough of us do this individually, we could pull it off.

Yeah. Every generation definitely has its own issues for certain, today's world is just too fast paced for my liking when you compare it to just 50 years ago, let alone 100, but with positives there are always negatives to go with it like worse healthcare, food, etc. thanks for the comment.
